DEFENSIVE REINFORCEMENT

Barreiro comes off after a superb afternoon, replaced by centre-back Kilian for the final minutes.

GOAL RULED OUT

Demirovic has the ball in the Mainz net but Martin Petersen has ruled it out. The ball came into the box from the right and wasn't dealt with by Zentner, but as Demirovic steemed in to put the ball home he got two hands on it ahead of the Freiburg substitute.

DEBUT FOR TIL

The summer signing comes on to make his Bundesliga debut. An attacking move with the attacking midfielder on loan from Spartak Moscow now on.
87'

ONISIWO ON THE BREAK

Mainz again work with the counter as Onisiwo is sent away with Lienhart chasing him into the Freiburg penalty area. He gets a low shot away, but Müller can only parry it out for a corner.
86'

AS THINGS STAND

With this, their first win of the season, Mainz will leap out of the relegation zone and within just two points of Freiburg in 15th in the table.
84'

A LATE HOPE?

Demirovic is on and into the attack ahead of Höler. Freiburg still need to find another gear in this game if they want to score again to make things interesting in these final minutes.
80'

A REST FOR MATETA

And a well-deserved one for Mateta, who comes off having scored a hat-trick in the first half. Ji comes on in his place.
75'

CAN'T KEEP THE BALL

The away side's legs are showing here and they can't seem to keep the ball for long periods of time to give the defence a rest. Freiburg continue to push on with one aim in mind as time ticks on.
73'

SOMEHOW NOT IN!

What a chance for Freiburg to add a second here. Sallai slides to connect with a cross from the right and it bounces to Höler, who then trips and ends up blocking an attempted clearance from St. Juste. He tries to flick the ball at goal from the ground but sends it wide of the mark.
70'

CHANGING IT UP

Some fresh legs for Mainz here, which are much-needed as Onisiwo and Kunde come on for Quaison and Fernandes.
69'

HERE COME FREIBURG!

A powerful shot from Günter is well-saved by Zentner here as Freiburg continue to pile on the pressure after getting themselves back into this game. Mainz under the cosh now.
63'

FREIBURG BACK IN IT!

Petersen pops up just when he's needed. He's been out of this game completely but is in the right place as Sallai's shot from range is parried by Zentner, and Petersen mops up the rebound to give the home side hope.

MATETA CLOSE TO A FOURTH!

Mainz cut Freiburg open again through the middle and Mateta is sent in on goal by Barreiro. He rounds Müller to the left of goal but is forced wide than he'd like and his shot can't get on target.
58'

STILL PROBING

Despite being three goals to the good, Mainz are still pushing forward for more here. Most of their good work in the second half so far has come down the right with Öztunali and Boetius combining.
56'

50-50 CHALLENGE

Barreiro and Höler meet a ball on the end of the Mainz box at the same time here. In fact, Barreiro was just ahead of the Freiburg forward and he wins a free-kick. Meanwhile, Höler is down but should be okay to continue.
52'

SO FAR, SO GOOD

The Mainz defence is still restricting Freiburg here. The hosts lacking a spark in attack, while Mainz are sitting deeper - happy with the scoreline - and not forcing themselves to press in the way they did in the first half.
47'

FREIBURG NEEDING A BRIGHT START

At 0-3 down into this second half, time is already against the hosts in this game. They'll be needing to show a different gameplan in this second period if they want to get back into this game.

STORY OF THE HALF

Freiburg have had 70 percent of the possession here in the first half, but have yet to register a shot on target. Meanwhile, Mainz - playing on the counter - have scored three from six shots on target and 12 attempts in total.

MATETA GUNNING FOR HAALAND

BVB's Erling Haaland hit four goals yesterday against Hertha, and Mateta already has three in the first half here for Mainz. The Frenchman only managed three goals last season in a campaign ravaged by injury, and he's already on seven this season after just eight games of 2020/21.
40'

MAGICAL MATETA!

It's a first half hat-trick for the Frenchman against his favourite opponent. Boetius with a perfectly-timed pass to match Mateta's run behind the Freiburg defence. He's on the ball into the penalty area and slots the ball across Müller and into the far bottom corner. What a performance from Mainz on their way to a first win of the season!

MAINZ DOING EVERYTHING RIGHT

This really has been a superb team performance from Mainz in the first half. Pressing as a team and winning the ball back while staying patient in possession and working chances on goal. Freiburg really struggling to get things going for themselves up the pitch.
34'

IT'S THAT MAN AGAIN!

Goal number 6 of the season for him, and his 7th in four games vs. Freiburg. Quaison has far too much time and space on the edge of the Freiburg box to shoot at goal. Müller saves, but the rebound falls out in front of goal and Mateta is the first to it to put it home. Mainz deservedly extending their lead!

GRIFO THE KEY

The Italy international has been the spark so far for Freiburg in attack, but it's been a struggle for the home side. Mainz's defence has been superb and there's a real lack of penetration coming from the home side going forward. Petersen and Höler have rarely touched the ball.

NIAKHATE DOWN

The Mainz captain has taken a knock from a challenge by Sallai and is looking worse for wear here. He's limping to the sideline and we'll have to see if he can continue.
23'

FANTASTIC FIRST HALF SO FAR

We've seen a breathless first 20 minutes or so here in Freiburg. Both sides are pressing high which making for an intense and entertaining game. Similar styles of play coming up against each other and it's Mainz who have put their plan into action better than their hosts.
22'

GRIFO FIRES WIDE

If they can find a way through the Mainz press, Freiburg are having joy as Grifo is found on the left flank. He winds up a shot but sends it high over the crossbar. Still, a positive sign for the home side.
21'

ANOTHER BIG CHANCE!

Quaison does well to find Öztunali in space on the right, and the winger races forward before sending a perfect pass for Barreiro to get onto in the penalty area. He flicks it at goal from a tight angle at the near post and can only find the side-netting in the end.
19'

BOETIUS FORCES A SAVE

Once again the ball is won back in the Freiburg half with Barreiro in ahead of Höler. The loose ball comes to Boetius, who turns onto his right foot and shoots from range. Müller is on hand to parry that away.
18'

LOOKING CONFIDENT

Mainz are pressing Freiburg high into their own half here, and forcing Freiburg to play the ball long. Some good confident play from the visitors who have a clear gameplan and are seeing it work well so far.
15'

LOVELY MOVE!

Günter and Grifo combine superbly down the left with a one-two passing exchange sending Günter into the Mainz box. He has options but goes for goal at the near post, but sees his shot hit the side-netting of Zentner's goal.

MATETA AGAIN!

Naive defending from Freiburg as Brosinski heads Mateta in behind the defence. He dribbles past Heintz onto his left foot and has a clean shot on goal - but can only find Müller with his powerful strike. In fact, the Freiburg goalkeeper saved that one with his face. Three chances now for Mateta and Mainz, one taken.
11'

THE RISK OF THE SET-UP

As always, Günter and Schmid are high up the pitch on either flank as wing-backs which is leaving the two central defenders slightly exposed at the back. Mainz are finding several openings on the counter here in the early goings.
9'

HUGE CHANCE ON THE COUNTER!

Mainz fly forward after clearing from a corner and Boetius sends Mateta away again. Tempelmann is tracking him into the penalty area, and Mateta cuts inside past him but prefers to pass across for Boetius rather than shooting at goal himself. Heintz is charging back and vitally intercepts the pass in his own penalty area before a shot could be taken.
5'

LOOKING TO RESPOND

Grifo is eager to get on the ball here in the early going, drifting inside from the left flank to get on the ball. Mainz's defence is sitting deep and inviting pressure on.
2'

WHAT A START!

Barely a minute on the clock and Mainz are ahead through Mateta. That's his 6th in four games against Freiburg now, and this one comes after Barreiro won the ball in midfield and sent a through ball on for Mateta. The Frenchman was is one-one-one and slotted the ball calmly past Müller. The dream start for Mainz!

AWAY WE GO!

The home side get things underway in Freiburg.
Kick-off!

KICK-OFF COMING UP!

We're just minutes away from getting our first game of the day underway here in Freiburg, Florian Müller - in goal for the home side - coming up against his parent club in Mainz today.

MATETA: "WE WON'T GO DOWN"

Mainz's French hope has said this week that he can promise the club's fans that they will not be relegated this season. "I'm an optimist, I always play to win." The 23-year-old is a believer in his own abilities, saying that he knows when he has a big chance the ball usually ends up in the net. Today, that will need to happen should Mainz get all three points.

BOETIUS THE SUPPORTING CAST

Mainz's Dutch attacking midfielder will be Mateta's closest support today. He's the most fouled Mainz player this season (13) and also recorded a team-high 23 sprints in the draw with Schalke last time out.

SAME STORY FOR MAINZ

The Bundesliga's bottom club have picked up just one point this season, losing six of their seven games so far. Mainz have also conceded seven goals inside the last 10 minutes of games this season, and dropped seven points from winning positions. If they want to finally kick-start their season with a win the ZeroFivers must learn to hold onto a lead.

FREIBURG LOOKING TO KICK-START

Following the opening day 3-2 win at VfB Stuttgart - in which Petersen scored the opener - Freiburg have picked up just three points from their subsequent six games.

PETERSEN VS. MATETA

It's the battle of two fine goalscorers today, looking to take their teams up the table as quickly as possible. Mainz striker Mateta has scored five goals in his three Bundesliga meetings with Freiburg, making the Black Forest club his favourite opponents. While Petersen has been recalled to start for the first time in three games after scoring three goals in the opening seven matches of the campaign.
