Full time: Magdeburg 1-1 Braunschweig

After a lightning start with Atik's early goal in the fifth minute, Magdeburg were clearly the better side for a long time. However, the home team failed to convert their many clear-cut chances. Braunschweig punished them ruthlessly with a penalty, which Tempelmann slotted home without any trouble. After the equaliser, Eintracht were the more dangerous team for several minutes but also failed to score a second time. As a result, Braunschweig gain a point in their relegation battle, while Magdeburg lose two in the promotion race.

Another booking

After Atik, El Hankouri is now also shown a yellow card for going in too hard in a challenge. Magdeburg's determination is evident. However, Eintracht have been wide awake since the equaliser.

A minute of silence beforehand

At the request of the home team, there will be a moment of remembrance before kick-off for the victims of the attack on the Magdeburg Christmas market on 20 December last year. There is a banner with the inscription, 'Our thoughts are with all victims and injured - against hate and violence'.

21st Remembrance Day in German Football

Eighty years ago, on 27 January 1945, the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp was liberated. German football has been commemorating this event on matchdays around 27 January for more than 20 years, remembering the people persecuted, deported and murdered by the Nazis.

Happy birthday!

Ermin Bičakčić turns 35 years old today.

Hoffmann is back

Ron-Thorben Hoffmann wasn't allowed to play against his former club Schalke last week, but today he makes his comeback for the Lions. In the first half of the season, Hoffmann only made two appearances for Schalke, but last term the 25-year-old was one of the key players in helping Braunschweig stay up. Marko Johansson, who played in goal last week despite an injury, is absent and requires surgery.

Two Braunschweig changes

Daniel Scherning makes two changes to his starting line-up compared to the 0-0 draw against Schalke: Kevin Ehlers and Paul Jaeckel are starting today in place of Jannis Nikolaou (suspended due to red card) and Robert Ivanov (5th yellow card) - both last featured in the starting 11 on Matchday 15 during the 5-0 defeat in Düsseldorf.

One change for hosts

Only one adjustment for Magdeburg after the furious opening victory in the new year in Elversberg: Silas Gnaka is fit again, replacing Connor Krempicki in the side.

Braunschweig starting XI

Hoffmann - Jaeckel, Bičakčić, Ehlers - Rittmüller, Köhler, Di Michele Sanchez - Kaufmann, Tempelmann - Szabó, Philippe

Magdeburg starting XI

Reimann - Hugonet, Mathisen, Heber - Gnaka - Hercher, El Hankouri, Nollenberger - Burcu, Kaars, Atik

Daniel Scherning targets improvement

"The lads showed in the two winter friendlies with their six goals that they know where the goal is and that they can score. Against Schalke, we weren't good enough in the final third. Defensively, we want to build on the performance, and offensively, more must and will come."

Christian Titz's view on Braunschweig

"Braunschweig are dangerous in transition. In their last match, they were compact and stable. In [Lino] Tempelmann, they've acquired another good player in the winter transfer window. He gives them a different threat."

Minute's silence planned

There will be a minute's silence ahead of kick-off in memory of the victims of the attack at the Magdeburg Christmas market on 20 December 2024. Both teams will come together to hold a banner that reads, "Our thoughts are with all victims and the injured - Against hate and violence".

Match officials

Dr. Robin Braun will oversee Friday's game, ably assisted by Marc Philip Eckermann and Asmir Osmanagic. Stefan Lupp is the fourth official, while Benjamin Cortus and Vanessa Kaminski are on VAR duties.

Polter in focus

Sebastian Polter has scored four times in his last two matches against Magdeburg, with braces in Schalke (2023) and Union Berlin (2019) colours.

Home and away struggles

Magdeburg have not won a home match this season, while Braunschweig are still without an away victory.

H2H record

Braunschweig lead the overall head-to-head record between the two teams, winning six and losing four of 13 competitive meetings. However, Magdeburg have taken maximum points in three of the last four against the Lions.
