Full-time: Darmstadt 0-1 Paderborn

Although the tenth second-division encounter between the two teams did not remain goalless, in the end it was a very tactically-oriented match in which the visitors defended strongly and can thank the scorer of the golden goal, Felix Platte (who left the pitch shortly after due to injury). New signing Riemann can celebrate a clean sheet on his debut for the away side, who secured an important victory on the road.

Strong defensive performance from the visitors

The visitors' defensive line shifts cleverly time and again and predominantly shows strength in tackles. As a result, there's hardly any danger to their own goal.
87'

Paderborn establishing themselves in the attacking third

Paderborn keeps the play away from their own penalty area. The seconds are ticking away for the home side.
85'

Hoffmeier stops the attack

Tactical foul by the Paderborn defender. However, the resulting free kick from the centre circle lands in Riemann's grasp once again.
84'

Good performance from Nürnberger

The slightly improved offensive performance of the home side is mainly due to Nürnberger, who repeatedly manages to free himself well and distribute the balls forward.

Full complement in the Darmstadt attack

The quadruple substitution hasn't had a positive effect yet. However, with Lakenmacher, Vilhelmsson and Hornby, the centre is now definitely well-staffed. Can the Lilies still make something happen?
79'

Quadruple substitution: Boëtius celebrates fantastic comeback

Kohfeldt makes all four remaining substitutions at once! Boëtius's appearance is a wonderful story. After overcoming cancer, the winter signing plays his first match since May 2023!
77'

Ansah counters

Ansah demonstrates what a potentially decisive counter-attack could look like. He utilises his pace on the left flank, but the cross is too weak. Schuhen clears.
74'

Fresh personnel for the visitors

Two more substitutions for the away team. The yellow-carded Götze and Michel come off, Hansen and Musliu are on. This leaves Kwasniok with one more substitution, while his counterpart can still make four changes.
72'

Tight match for a chance to move up

Shortly after, Paderborn's counter-attack unfolds. However, Michel and Co. run into a wall of retreating Lilies. It remains a tough affair. But it's definitely exciting. There's a lot at stake, as the winner of the match will be knocking on the door at the top of the table.
70'

Blocked again

Once again, nothing is coming from set pieces for Darmstadt. However, the Lilies are now establishing themselves in the attacking third. Nürnberger is then blocked for the umpteenth time.
69'

Götze needs to be careful

Götze, who has already been booked, fouls Marseiler. Free kick for the Lilies. Can they capitalise from this set-piece?
67'

Förster can't make up his mind

Förster cuts inside from the left. The result is somewhat telling: half cross, half shot, and the ball sails into no man's land.
64'

Change in central defence

Kohfeldt makes a substitution. Captain Riedel's day is done as Maglica comes on.
63'

Will Paderborn's away streak continue?

Kwasniok's team has gone unbeaten in their last four away matches. Current signs suggest they might extend this streak to five games.
61'

Paderborn's set pieces initially harmless

The visitors force two more corners. But all Darmstadt fans can breathe a sigh of relief, as there's no danger to the home side's goal.
59'

Second substitution for Paderborn

Castaneda comes on for Terho. The visitors' rapid attack gets another trump card.
56'

Nürnberger tests Riemann

The Lilies are working hard to equalise. Nürnberger takes a shot, but the flawless Riemann is alert to the low drive.
52'

Darmstadt on the attack

That's more like it from Darmstadt! First, Hornby gets on the end of a cross from Förster, but his first-time effort is too central and straight at Riemann. Shortly after, Kleefisch's attempt is blocked by the Paderborn defence.
50'

Kleefisch's cross becomes an easy catch

As at the beginning of the match, Darmstadt are trying to get a foothold in the game through spells of possession. However, Kleefisch's cross ends up in Riemann's arms.
47'

Hosts can still do better

Both teams have come out of the break unchanged. Can Darmstadt show a different face than they did in the first half?

Half-time: Darmstadt 0-1 Paderborn

Paderborn lead deservedly through a Platte goal, but lost their striker shortly after his goal due to injury. Darmstadt have shown very little creativity so far, while the visitors are defensively solid and keep creating chances up front - especially from set-pieces.

Schuhen's reflex stop prevents a second!

Schuhen has problems with Obermaier's low attempt and parries the ball forward. But the keeper is wide awake for Bilbija's rebound attempt and brilliantly prevents a potential second for Paderborn.

Good free-kick position

Now, for the first time, a yellow card is shown to a Darmstadt player. Riedel stamps on Terho. The consequence: A good free-kick position, about 25 metres centrally in front of the goal.

Platte in the spotlight

First the striker (who, by the way, also played for Darmstadt in the past) opened the scoring, but he has to leave the pitch shortly after due to an injury.
43'

Ansah newly introduced

The speedy Ansah has come on for Platte.
41'

Platte forced off with injury

How bitter for the goalscorer. He's just scored his first goal of the season, and now he has to leave the pitch due to injury. After an aerial duel with Vukotić, he stays down and has to be carried off on a stretcher. It doesn't look good. However, it wasn't clear exactly what injury he sustained.
38'

Corredor tries his luck

Darmstadt look for a quick response. Corredor has a go, but the ball flies well wide.
38'

First for the season

The striker finds the net in classic centre-forward fashion with his first goal of the campaign.
37'

Poacher's goal from Platte!

It almost had to be a set-piece situation that leads to a goal here. Obermaier delivers the ball sharply to the far post, and Mehlem heads it back to the edge of the six-yard box, where Platte is perfectly positioned and buries it with a first-time finish!

Another yellow

Fourth booking for the visitors. Platte complains about a decision by the referee. The visitors need to be careful, as they have already accumulated quite a few cards.
34'

Not enough pressure from the wings

Both teams still lack offensive rhythm. In particular, the wide play of the teams is not yet consistent enough.
31'

Michel comes close!

Best chance for the visitors. Michel calmly sets up the ball 25 metres from goal. The ball curves to the left just before it reaches the net and whistles about a metre wide of the post.
31'

Third yellow card for Paderborn

The returnee sees a yellow card at his old stomping ground. A tactical foul after losing possession in midfield brings about the booking.

A card which comes with consequences

Götze fouls Hornby at the halfway line. The defender was clearly too late, and it's a fifth yellow card for the centre-back, meaning he will be suspended for the match against Fürth.
22'

Terho tries his luck

Paderborn are now growing into the game a bit. Terho tries again from distance, the shot from the half-right position goes about two metres wide of the right post.
20'

No danger

The aforementioned corner comes to nothing. A somewhat disjointed match is still lacking in clearly created chances.
19'

Another set-piece goal?

Terho and Obermaier play their way down the right flank to the byline. The latter wins a corner. Set-pieces have already proven dangerous...
16'

Return for Mehlem

The match pauses briefly breather. So far, there's little structure in the attacking efforts of both teams. One player who can change that for the visitors is winter signing Mehlem. It's a special match for the central midfielder, as he spent seven years with the Lilies.
13'

Michel next to score - but the whistle had already gone

Another goal for the visitors, but it's disallowed again. Michel uses unfair means to win the ball at the edge of the penalty area. The referee's whistle blows as the shot is taken.
12'

Terho toils

Terho initially squanders possession, but then chases after the ball into midfield to win back possession. In the end, the Finn attempts a long-range shot, but it goes wide of the target.
10'

Hosts attack down the wings

López and Förster combine on the right flank. The latter delivers a dangerous cross into the box, but the newly organised defence of the visitors manages to clear.

Kick-off!

Goals guaranteed?

In the last four encounters between these two teams, there have always been at least three goals scored. In fact, none of the nine meetings in the second division have ever ended goalless. It's certainly a good omen for goals, and the match will be underway in just a few moments.

Riemann in focus

The debut for the new goalkeeper is quite remarkable. The former Bochum player is in goal just four days after his official transfer. The 36-year-old has plenty of experience (334 matches in the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2) but last stood between the sticks in a competitive match in May 2024.

Kwasniok brings in Riemann

The situation is different for the visitors from East Westphalia. Their coach makes four changes compared to the 2-1 defeat at Hertha. Notably: new signing Riemann is between the posts just days after his transfer from Bochum, replacing regular goalkeeper Schubert. Additionally, Götze, Hoffmaier and Michel come into the starting eleven in place of Musliu, Curda and Castaneda.

No Darmstadt changes

Darmstadt's coach trusts the same starting lineup that began the 2-2 draw in Düsseldorf. New signing Boëtius takes a seat on the bench for now, while top scorer Lidberg is still absent from the squad.

Paderborn starting XI

Riemann - Hoffmeier, Götze, Scheller - Obermair, Mehlem, Bilbija, Zehnter - Terho, Platte, Michel

Darmstadt starting XI

Schuhen - López, Riedel, Vukotić, Nürnberger - Klefisch, Müller - Förster, Corredor - Marseiler, Hornby

Lukas Kwasniok on facing Darmstadt

"Darmstadt has an extremely complete team that covers all facets of the game. This will be a tough nut to crack."

Florian Kohfeldt on facing Paderborn

"It will be a very exciting match because Paderborn are a team that have an interesting footballing approach. They are very strong in positional play with the ball. They have different variations in how they want to occupy spaces. Tactically, it will definitely be a very exciting game. The match preparation was one of the most enjoyable for me because we can expect a high tactical level on Sunday."

Curious similarity

Both clubs have accomplished a rare feat: After being relegated from the third division (Darmstadt in 2013, Paderborn in 2017), they each managed to stay in the division due to other teams being denied licenses. In the following two years, both clubs proceeded to march all the way up to the Bundesliga.

The only away victory

Paderborn's only away victory at Böllenfalltor was a 4-0 win under Steffen Baumgart in November 2020.

Tale of the tape

All eleven previous competitive matches between Darmstadt and Paderborn took place in the Bundesliga 2, and there was always a victor (seven times for the Lilies, four times for Paderborn).
