Merciless Magdeburg
Schalke attacked well for long stretches, having more shots on goal than their opponents (17-16). Magdeburg, as they have been so often this season away from home, were simply merciless, switching play superbly and securing another crushing away victory.

Heavy home defeat
A 5-1 loss would equal Schalke's worst ever home defeat in Bundesliga 2, which jointly came in 1989 against Braunschweig and in 1984 against Hertha.

A historic achievement
Magdeburg have scored five goals in each of their last three away matches, a feat no team had ever accomplished before in the entire history of Bundesliga 2.

Magdeburg manageng the lead
The visitors are calmly keeping possession of the ball. Schalke launch another attack through Donkor, but the home side are now lacking a bit of energy with the four-goal deficit looking too much to bridge at this stage.

Another four-goal haul
Until last week there had not been a case of a player scoring four goals in a Bundesliga 2 match since Tim Kleindienst two years ago. Now we have two in a row! Last week it was Ulm's Semir Telalovic against Regensburg, before Kaars smashed his quartet tonight.

Sensational away run

It's a fourth!
Magdeburg just keep coming forward. Burcu delicately sets up Hercher, who charges to the right post. The right winger then sends the ball smoothly into the far corner.

Level goalscorers' race
Just like in his last away match in Elversberg, the Dutchman bags another hat-trick! Kaars is now level with Sylla as the top scorer in the league - the two most prolific strikers in Bundesliga 2 are on the pitch today.
58'
Schalke almost strike back
Gantenbein heads to the right, Reimann parries, and Sylla hits an effort on the rebound, but Mathisen manages to clear it back into the arms of the Magdeburg keeper from the goal line.

Kaars completes hat-trick!!!

Schalke look to respond
After conceding, the hosts have stepped on the gas to establish themselves in Magdeburg's half. Schalke fans have reason to still believe - as five times this season their side has managed to earn points after falling behind (leading to two wins and three draws).

Seguin suspended
Seguin gets a yellow card for a challenge on Nollenberger and will miss Schalke's next match against Cologne.

Karaman cracks an effort in!
The Schalke captain unleashes a powerful shot from outside the box, narrowly missing the top left corner.

No other Magdeburg player has scored more than five times this season - his sixth goal in the last four matches!
29'
Kaars with the breakthrough!
Magdeburg take the lead! After a throw-in from the right, it all comes very quickly - Burcu has the vision to spot Kaars making a run into the box on the right, and the striker does the rest by cleverly chipping the ball over Heekeren and into the net.
27'
Visitors threaten
Kaars is sent down the left into the box, and Heekeren can only parry the shot from a tight angle, but Burcu stumbles on the rebound - partly because Schallenberg is there to get in the way again.

23'

Aydin shows ambition
Aydin has a go from outside the box, but his shot from about 25 metres flies wide to the right.
11'
First shot falls Schalke's way
Schalke remain on the attack. Hugonet tries to head clear, but only as far as Karaman, who creates space for himself with a feint and shoots from a tight angle on the left - Reimann manages to save at the near post.
10'
Schalke switch play nicely
Seguin plays the ball to the right, but Mohr can't get through to reach it.

Never again is always! 21st Remembrance Day in German Football marked
80 years ago, on 27 January 1945, the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp was liberated. German football has been commemorating this event for more than 20 years, remembering the people persecuted, deported and murdered by the Nazis on match days around 27 January.
Both can climb
With a victory, Magdeburg would jump to at least second place until tomorrow. Schalke, on the other hand, could overtake Hertha and Darmstadt with a win, moving up to 11th - which would be their best position since Matchday 3!
Spoilt for choice
In addition to Ba, there are also three returnees for Schalke in Murkin, Bachmann and Antwi-Adjei who were recently sidelined due to injuries. All three are on the bench.
New striking options
There are new additions only on the bench for both teams. Both Pape Meïssa Ba, who was just signed this week by Schalke, and Alexander Ahl-Holmström for Magdeburg (who arrived at the beginning of January) are included in the squad for the first time.
No changes on either side
Neither Schalke nor Magdeburg have made any personnel changes compared to last week, the starting line-ups remain the same.
Magdeburg starting XI
Reimann - Hugonet, Mathisen, Heber - Gnaka - Hercher, El Hankouri, Nollenberger - Burcu, Kaars, Atik
Schalke starting XI
Heekeren - Bulut, Schallenberg, Kaminski, Donkor - Grüger, Seguin - Aydin, Karaman, Mohr - Sylla
Christian Titz on Schalke
"Schalke is a team that has stabilised and allows much less action at the back. It's also clear that they have increased their share of possession. We're playing in a big stadium in front of a full house, which will create a great atmosphere."
Kees van Wonderen on Magdeburg
"Magdeburg has a playing style that is difficult to play against. We are facing a top team that clearly leads the table in terms of away form with 25 points from ten matches. We will need to give our best performance. In possession, Magdeburg are often dominant, which makes it hard to play against them. They also play through the goalkeeper in their build-up play. It's not easy to put pressure on them. We must stick to our plan and implement the right measures."
Gnaka in focus
Silas Gnaka scored three of his five goals in the Bundesliga 2 against Schalke. Last season, he managed a brace in Gelsenkirchen to give his team a 2-0 lead, but Schalke turned the match around and won 4-3.
International history
The former European Cup winners Schalke and Magdeburg once met internationally as well, with Magdeburg clearly gaining the upper hand in the second round of the UEFA Cup in 1977/78. A 4-2 home victory was followed by a 3-1 away win at the Parkstadion in front of over 70,000 spectators. Among those playing for Magdeburg was club legend Wolfgang Seguin - his son Paul, born in Magdeburg, has been playing for Schalke since 2023.
Excitement billed
In the three second-division encounters between Schalke and Magdeburg, there was a bit of everything: one win for each side plus a draw, along with 14 goals, two penalties and one sending-off.
