Full-time: Elversberg 2-2 Karlsruhe

After a slower-paced first half, the fans at Kaiserlinde are treated to a real spectacle in the second half, where the home side look like certain winners for a long time. However, Karlsruhe showed great character and, thanks to a brace from captain Wanitzek, managed to secure a 2-2 draw and a point.

Almost a hat-trick!

After a cross from Pinto Pedrosa, Wanitzek finds himself completely unmarked for a header at the penalty spot, but he can't get enough power behind it. It goes wide of the left post of the home side's goal. That could have been 3-2!

Overhit

The equaliser!

Pfeiffer lays it back to Wanitzek in the penalty area, who slots the ball low into the net for 2-2 against Elversberg, even nutmegging Pinckert in the process. Karlsruhe are now sniffing a chance to salvage a point!

Nearly the decisive moment?

Gerezgiher is played through on the left side of the opposition penalty area and looks for a shot from a tight angle. However, the ball slips off his instep and goes over the crossbar. Nevertheless, the home side remain dangerous.
80'

Into the stands

Wanitzek finds the substitute Geller on the right side, who attempts a cross at full speed. However, it goes awry and lands behind the host's goal.
78'

A heated final phase?

Everything is set for an exciting final few minutes. With his two substitutions, Elversberg coach Horst Steffen has primarily reinforced his defence and is clearly expecting a storm of attacks from the visitors.
75'

Poised for a tense finish!

Karslruhe get back into the game through a corner kick. The set-piece taken from the right side is unfortunately headed towards their own goal by an Elversberg player, where KSC captain Wanitzek is positioned at the near post and only needs to tap it in.

Off target

Sahin receives the ball in off the right and attempts a long-range shot from 18 yards out. However, the low drive goes a good couple yards wide of the left post of the Karlsruhe goal.
70'

No penalty

Kaufmann gets the ball in front of the opposition penalty area and tries a long-range shot. Pinckert, turning away, blocks it for a corner. Kaufmann then appeals for a handball and demands a penalty, but it was quite clearly only the back of the Elversberg centre-back that made contact with the ball.
68'

Elversberg continuing to press

Despite the 2-0 lead, the hosts keep pushing forward, apparently determined to leave no doubt about a home victory. Karlsruhe are currently struggling to create chances, despite the fact that the Baden side had not failed to score in their previous 17 matches.

The decisive moment?

Sickinger steps up to take the penalty, making it 2-0 to Elversberg.

Off the post!

Schnellbacher is sent through into the Karlsruhe penalty area and chips the ball over Weiß. The onrushing Franke deflects the shot slightly, causing it to roll against the left post and then behind. The subsequent corner doesn't pose any danger, but that could easily have been 3-0 already.
55'

Turbulent minutes

The first few minutes of the second half have nothing in common with the sluggish phases of the previous period. It's bitter for Karlsruhe, who, after a great chance to equalise, suddenly find themselves two goals behind and now need to regroup.
52'

The 3-0?

After a through ball from Damar, Schnellbacher finds himself clear in front of Weiß and hammers the ball into the net under the crossbar for what appears to be the 3-0. However, referee Heft rules it offside, and the decision is confirmed by VAR.

Half-time: Elversberg 1-0 Karlsruhe

Thanks to a breakthrough from Petkov in the 44th minute, the home side go into the dressing room with a 1-0 lead. As Elversberg did more for the game, especially towards the end of the first half, this is deserved, although the match hasn't offered many highlights otherwise. It's still all to play for in the second half.

Petkov opens the scoring!

An individual effort puts the home side ahead just before half-time. Petkov receives the ball on the right side of the penalty area, almost on the byline. He brilliantly beats Wanitzek, and then scores through Beifus' legs from a tight angle to make it 1-0. A goal of sheer determination!

Karlsruhe free-kick comes to nothing

After a handball by Zimmerschied just outside the penalty area on the left, KSC are awarded a free-kick. Wanitzek delivers it sharply towards the onrushing Conté, who heads it well wide of the near post. The whistle goes anyway due to an attacking foul elsewhere in the penalty area.
33'

Elversberg increasing pressure

The home side are gradually raising the tempo and taking the initiative but still without real penetration. But what isn't yet, may still come.
30'

Inches away

A sharp, low cross from the right flank sees Petkov stretching to reach it with a sliding tackle in the middle to try and direct it towards goal. However, the Elversberg striker just fails to make contact with the ball and clutches his head in frustration. Had he connected, it would have been a gilt-edged opportunity.
26'

Kristof makes the save!

At the other end, Jung aims for the top right corner with a volley, but Elversberg's keeper is there, raising his arms just in time to make a strong save. There's a bit more urgency in the match now.
23'

Petkov creates danger

After a chipped ball into the six-yard box, Petkov receives the ball with his back to goal and tries to spin his marker Herold. He partially succeeds, but when he attempts to shoot, both Herold and goalkeeper Weiß are there to block the shot behind for a corner.
19'

Straightforward

Petkov delivers a cross into the Karlsruhe penalty area. Weiß is there and easily plucks the ball out the air.
camera-photo

Balanced match

So far, neither team is allowing the other much space.
17'

Just wide

Karlsruhe are getting stronger. Schleusener, who was played in on the left side of the penalty area, looks for the finish but puts the ball a good metre wide of the left post. Probably the best opportunity in what has been a tight encounter so far.
14'

First signs of goal threat

Conté receives the ball in the opposition's six-yard box but can't get a shot away as Elversberg left-back Neubauer blocks his path, sparing his keeper from having to make a save.
11'

An approach

Neubauer swings in a high cross from in off the left towards the penalty spot. However, the visitors' defence is on hand to head the ball out of the danger zone.
9'

Little pressure

Rohr has the ball in front of his own penalty area and faces deep-lying Karlsruhe players. The centre-back steps on the ball and simply waits to see what happens. Karlsruhe only slowly begin to put pressure on him, allowing Rohr to simply hold his position with the ball for a good 20 seconds.
7'

Relaxed start

Overall, both teams are not initially looking to play at a high tempo here, instead seeking security in longer passing sequences or looking for ways to build from the back.
4'

Same scenario at the other end

Elversberg also get their first corner, won by Petkov. However, this delivery is cleared at the near post.
3'

First corner

Conte is sent through on the left side and manages to win a first corner for the visitors. Rohr heads away the high cross from the set-piece and also blocks an attempted follow-up shot.
1'

And we're off!

The visitors, playing in blue, have kicked off. They are facing the Elversberg side, who are dressed all in white.
Kick-off!

Starting lineup debut for Egloff

For the 22-year-old midfielder, this is his first start after eight previous substitute appearances in the Bundesliga 2 (five for Karlsruhe, three for Stuttgart).

Milestones aplenty

Carlo Sickinger and Maurice Neubauer are each playing their 50th match in the Bundesliga 2 today. For KSC's defensive leader Marcel Franke, however, it's already his 250th match in the second tier of German football.

Karlsruhe also making changes

The visitors also make two changes to the starting eleven, with Egloff and Conté coming in for Burnić (ill) and Jensen, who is unavailable at short notice.

Two forced changes for Elversberg

Due to two suspensions, Elversberg's coach Horst Steffen has to make two changes to his starting lineup compared to the defeat in Cologne, bringing in Fellhauer and Schnellbacher in place of Baum (second yellow card) and Asllani (5th yellow card).

Karlsruhe starting XI

Weiß - Jung, Franke, Beifus, Herold - Egloff - Conte, Heußer, Wanitzek - Schleusener, Kaufmann

Elversberg starting XI

Kristof - Fellhauer, Pinckert, Rohr, Neubauer - Sickinger, Damar - Petkov, Sahin, Zimmerschied - Schnellbacher

Karlsruhe sign Wäschenbach

The 21-year-old Meiko Wäschenbach joins Karlsruhe from Cologne, moving to the Wildpark with immediate effect. The midfielder will wear the blue and white shirt with the number 21 on his back.

Rupp off to Switzerland

Karlsruher has loaned midfielder Noah Rupp to Swiss second-division club FC Stade Lausanne Ouchy until the end of the current season.

Christian Eichner on Elversberg

"The squad will be thinned out. We first have to see how we put it all together. And then we will try to start the second half of the season in Elversberg with points as well."

Horst Steffen on Karlsruhe

"We gave a good performance in Cologne. Now we've looked at what we can do better - defend more consistently and finish our chances better. But I'm satisfied with the way we played. If we maintain this, the results will come again."

Unbeaten

Karlsruhe are unbeaten overall against Elversberg, having achieved four wins and one draw in five competitive matches.

Favourable record

Karlsruhe have won all three second-tier encounters against Elversberg, scoring three goals in each match (3-2, 3-2, 3-0).
