A lighter look at 50 years of Bundesliga 2
There have been plenty of out-there moments in Bundesliga 2 over the past 50 years and we're here to remind you of several unforgettable scenes that will cheer fans of the division as we celebrate its milestone year.
A goalkeeping gaffe worthy of note
Own goals are always calamitous moments for those unfortunate players involved. When a goalkeeper is the main culprit, it seems the focus is sharpened even further on the guilty party. Take Hamburg custodian Daniel Heuer Fernandes, for example. When HSV's net minder hoofed the ball back into his goal as the snow fell in the Hamburg derby against FC St. Pauli, those who witnessed the moment knew it would live long in the memory. The unfortunate 'keeper was attempting to clear a treacherous Guilherme Ramos back pass when he hoiked into his own net. "I didn't imagine that happening, but these things can occur in football," Heuer Fernandes lamented afterwards. Despite his lapse, HSV's No.1 received encouraging chants from fans straight afterwards while his team managed to turn a 2-0 deficit into a draw by the end.

Flekken's memorable mishap
Striking as Heuer Fernandes's mistake was, Mark Flekken's bungle years earlier may just trump it. The Dutch international was keeping goal for MSV Duisburg in the 2017/18 campaign and facing FC Ingolstadt on Matchday 24 when the unthinkable happened. After saving a Stefan Kutschke penalty in the 10th minute, Flekken was understandably on a high. In fact, things appeared to get even better for Duisberg who thought they had gone 2-0 ahead in the game. What Flekken had failed to notice, however, was that his teammates had stopped celebrating after their second goal was chalked off for offside. The goalie was in his nets with his back to the action taking a sip of water while Ingolstadt were mounting a quick counter-attack. Kutschke punished Flekken and the Zebras by knocking into the empty goal and Bundesliga 2 had one of it's zanier moments set in stone.

"Enis (Hajri) heads us 2-0 in front, everyone cheers and the goal music also goes on," Flekken recalled. "I then turned around and just wanted something to drink when suddenly the ball went into my goal. The music wasn't even off by then. Sure, now I can finally smile about it - but it was a very strange scene. I won't put my water bottle in the goal anymore,” he added.
Terence Boyd to the rescue
A moment of camaraderie cheered supporters on Matchday 30 of the 2017/18 season. When Darmstadt's winger Baris Atik was injured just six minutes after coming on as a substitute, USMNT international Terrence Boyd was quick to react, the striker swooping in before carrying his hurt teammate off the field. Photos of the 6'1" boyd lifting the 5'4" Atik from the playing field had the appearance of a concerned parent carrying their child to safety, as if Boyd were playing the role of the caring father.
"Any one of us would have done that for Baris; that's what sets us apart as a team," Boyd said afterwards. "The solidarity within the group, in the club and among our fans here is outstanding, as was witnessed again today,” the American added.
A new take on the knuckleball
Hansa Rostock goalkeeper Markus Kolke was also looking to lift his team when making a solid save from Hanover's Sebastian Ernst back in 2021/22. Kolke was left bewildered, however, when looking down into his hands he saw a burst ball. Ernst's effort - deflected off Damian Rossbach - proved too much for the match ball, which suffered a mid-air puncture before landing in Kolke's mitts, leaving the shot-stopper moemtarily mystified.
