Game over

Honours even. That was a bit of a battle. Union's point takes them level with Bayern Munich at the top of the table. Schalke have now drawn their last four games 0-0.

Last chance

Union win an injury-time corner. Trimmel delivers, Schalke clear but the ball comes back in and Roussillon gets something on it. The ball trickles wide.

Man down

Handbags here. Brunner was down in his own box while Union continued to attack, which didn't please the visitors one bit. The ref separates the angry factions.

Few top-quality chances

Apart from Doekhi's first half strike, there haven't really been any chances to make you shout. We're heading for a scoreless draw here. Will we have some last-gasp draama?

More swaps

Another double change here with Roussillon and Thorsby now out there challenging.

Schalke changes

Thomas Reis throws former Union forward Simon Terodde into the mix. Kenan Karaman is also on for Die Knappen for the last ten.
78'

Seguin waste

Paul Seguin arcs a harmless shot into the hands of Fährmann. Seguin was well-placed there and he looks pretty angry with himself following that effort.
76'

Jenz clued in

Becker again from the left and he almost finds Jordan this time but Moritz Jenz gets a crucial touch to concede the corner, of which nothing comes.
74'

Becker on the move

Becker goes on a run down the left and makes space for a well-hit cross towards the near post. Fährmann dives out and gobbles that up.

Becker and Jordan are now beginning to pose a goal threat as they prowl about in the Schalke half.

Michael Frey bursts through on the right and smacks angled shot at the target. Rönnow gets across to tip wide.

Becker is on

Union's highly dangerous forward makes his way into the action.

Schalke up their game

A decent spell from Schalke this. Zalazar, Frey and Bülter are making nuisances of themselves. Union are going to make a change ...
56'

Gießelmann booked

Gießelmann trods on Drexler out by the touchline. That's a nasty foul. A booking for the Union man.
53'

Change due?

Union's subs are warming up. Will we see Sheraldo Becker at some point here? The forward's presence on the sideline has upped Behrens' game in the past few minutes. Union's No. 17 has been looking very lively.
49'

Schalke's dry spell

Goals have certainly been hard to come by for Schalke of late. The Royal Blues have failed to score in the first half of their last seven Bundesliga games.
48'

Gießelmann menace

Niko Gießelmann creates some panic in the Schalke penalty area. The visitors manage to clear their lines but the home crowd enjoyed that moment.

Nothing in it

The first half has been a bit of a battle with no really clear openings for either side.

Khedira effort

Khedira steps forward and wallops one at the target from distance. Fährmann gets two hands behind that. Straightforward stop for the Schalke custodian.

Schalke change

Uronen hobbles out of the contest with a look of huge disappointment on his face. He's replaced by Ouwejan.

Fischer's Schalke warning

Union coach Urs Fischer warned that just because Schalke had failed to find the net in their recent unbeaten run, it didn't mean today's visitors were lacking up front. "In those last three games, they had the most shots on goal of all Bundesliga teams," the 56-year-old said. "I think it will be a tough game, but we are looking forward to it as well," he added.

Reis eyes maximum returns

Schalke coach Thomas Reis is keen for his side to kick on after three straight draws steadied the Royal Blues' ship in recent weeks. “We have a run that shows we were hard to beat three times in a row," the coach said. "Now, we want to also pick up the three points, then our run can also be seen as very positive,” he added.

More on those teams

As expected, Josip Juranovic is rotated out for club captain Christopher Trimmel for the hosts, who have also dropped Becker to the bench as Sven Michel starts up front. As for the visitors, Maya Yoshida has the armband once more, while Cedric Brunner has shaken off a thigh problem to start at right-back and winter signing Michael Frey continues in attack.

Union starting XI

Ronnow - Doekhi, Knoche, Baumgartl - Trimmel (c), Laidouni, Khedira, Haberer, Gießelmann - Michel, Behrens

Union subs

Grill, Jaeckel, Juranovic, Roussillon, Thorsby, Seguin, Becker, Leweling, Jordan

Schalke starting XI

Fährmann - Brunner, Yoshida (c), Jenz, Uronen - Kral, Krauß - Drexler, Zalazar, Bülter - Frey

Schalke subs

Schwolow, Ouwejan, Greiml, Matriciani, Can Aydin, Balanta, Terodde, Karaman

Rock-bottom visitors

While Union continue to defy the odds at the top of the table, Schalke are struggling at the other end. They are currently in last place and a whole five points off second-bottom Hertha Berlin. They need points, and they need them fast.

Watch: Union hanging tough at the top

Only promoted to the top-flight in 2019, Union are now leading the pack chasing Bayern. It's some story.

Chance to go top

Thanks to Bayern's slip-up at Gladbach yesterday, Union will move into top spot if they beat Schalke. Victory would move then two points clear of the defending champions going into the pair's meeting next Sunday. Tasty.

Watch: Previous meeting: Schalke 1-6 Union Berlin

Sheraldo Becker and Sven Michel each scored twice as Union blew Schalke away on Matchday 4, climbing up to second place as a result.

Strong at home

Urs Fischer's Union side are unbeaten in their last 15 Bundesliga home games. Only Bayern (17 matches) are currently on a longer such streak.

On a roll, part II

Schalke are enjoying their best run of form this season too, relatively speaking: the Bundesliga's bottom club have posted 0-0 draws in each of their last three games. It's the first time this term that they taken at least a point in three successive matches, and the first time in the club's history that they have kept three clean sheets in a row in the Bundesliga.

On a roll

Union have won all six competitive games so far in 2023, and by winning five in a row in the Bundesliga they've set a new club record for consecutive victories.
