Scenes in Bochum. The hosts are level at the death. Koji Miyoshi begins a move that eventually ends with Jonathan Tah diverting the ball back to the Japanese. He then squeezes a shot in from a tight angle. Incredible.

More on those teams

Does the Dieter Hecking Bochum revolution start here? The veteran coach makes four changes to the hosts' starting XI - more than VfL have made ahead of any game this season. In one of those swaps, Gerrit Holtmann starts for the first time in the Bundesliga for almost eight months. Leverkusen, meanwhile, make three changes to the side that started against Liverpool in the week, with - most notably - Patrik Schick in to make his second start this term

Worst start in Bundesliga history

Everything that could have gone wrong for Bochum this season pretty much has. After nine matchdays, they have managed to pick up a single point, the joint-lowest total since the Bundesliga's inauguration. If you also factor in goal difference, Bochum's total of -20 means they have had the worst start of any team in a German top-flight campaign.

Hecking the new Bochum head coach

Following Peter Zeidler's departure, Dieter Hecking has been named as the new Bochum head coach. The 60-year-old has more than 20 years experience in the dugout, having taken the helm at the likes of Borussia Mönchengladbach, HSV and VfL Wolfsburg, and was named German Manager of the Year in 2015.

Tale of the tape

Leverkusen have lost just one of their past 10 games against Bochum, and have won 31 to the Unabsteigbaren's 21 meetings overall. Still, only against Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Mönchengladbach amongst active Bundesliga clubs do Bochum have more top-flight wins. Their previous triumph over Leverkusen, a 3-0 win on the final day of the 2022/23 season, secured their place in the Bundesliga for another season.

Difficult European night for Leverkusen

Die Werkself were on the wrong end of a disappointing defeat against Liverpool in the Champions League on Tuesday, losing 4-0. That was their first away loss in any competition in 18 months, another testament to their incredible form since the start of last season.

Xabi Alonso on facing Bochum

"The table and Bochum's number of points are irrelevant, it's always difficult there. They have a clear DNA marked by high intensity and lots of passion with the atmosphere at the stadium also always playing a role."
camera-photo

Dieter Hecking ahead of facing Leverkusen in his first match in charge

"Of course, you can see that we are currently bottom of the table. Not everyone can walk happily through the dressing room, that would be weird. But after three days of working together, we have laid a good foundation. We have to play from a good basic formation. Recently there was too much space between the lines. I want to try to keep the spaces tight with the team."
