Nuri Şahin makes five changes to the side that started the 3-2 defeat at home to Leverkusen on Friday. The injury and illness crisis in the defence has abated with Nico Schlotterbeck (pictured), Emre Can and Ramy Bensebaini all declared fit in time to come into tonight's XI. Further forward, Julien Duranville starts instead of the injured Karim Adeyemi, while Marcel Sabitzer starts and Maximilian Beier drops to the bench.

Kiel may sit second from bottom, but they clinched a morale-boosting first win of the season with a 5-1 triumph over Augsburg just before the winter break. And although they lost to Freiburg in their first match back, they showed plenty of fight to come back from 3-0 to 3-2 - thanks to a Phil Harres brace - and will be looking to ride the wave against an injury-hit, out-of-sorts Dortmund side.

Waiting for things to click

After securing their first away win of the season in the last game before the winter break, BVB promptly suffered their first home defeat in the first match back. With just one win in their last five Bundesliga games, Dortmund have slipped to eighth, but a win over Kiel could send them back among the European places.

Goals guaranteed?

No team has kept fewer clean sheets than Kiel (the only one came on Matchday 9 in a 1-0 home win over Heidenheim). Dortmund have kept clean sheets in just one of their last 14 Bundesliga games (a 4-0 home win over Freiburg on Matchday 11).

Strikers in focus

Phil Harres, who joined Kiel from the Regionalliga (fourth division) last summer, has scored twice in the last two games and has only one goal fewer than BVB top scorer Serhou Guirassy (six) this term. Guirassy has scored in six Bundesliga games this season, half of which BVB have lost.

With 25 points so far this season, failure to win in Kiel would make this Dortmund's lowest tally at this point in the season in 10 years. Kiel, on the other hand, have already conceded more goals this season (41) than in the entirety of the last campaign (39).

Dortmund fell to their first home loss of the season, with a Patrik Schick brace helping to secure yet another win for Xabi Alonso's men, who remain four points behind Bayern in second. Dortmund are currently 8th, five points off the Champions League places.

A Bundesliga first

This will be the first league meeting between Kiel and Dortmund. They've met twice before in the DFB Cup, with BVB winning 5-0 at home and 4-0 away in the 2020/21 and 2011/12 editions, respectively. The Black-Yellows went on to win the trophy on both occasions.
