Full time: Wolfsburg 5-1 Gladbach

Not many people will have seen that result coming, especially given Gladbach's dominance in the first half. Wolfsburg were absolutely ruthless after the break though, and deservedly take all three points to add further fuel to fire their quest for European qualification.

Easy peasy

This has been a spectacular second-half collapse from Gladbach. Wolfsburg break forward in numbers, with Wimmer sliding the ball through to Joakim Mæhle, who draws the goalkeeper before sliding it to his right to Nmecha for another simple tap-in.

Wimmer sprints forward down the right to collect Amoura's pass. He's given plenty of time and space to pick out a cross towards the back post, giving Nmecha the easiest of tap-ins from close range.

Game, set and match

That's surely the win for Wolfsburg now as Arnold charges into the box on the left, holds off his marker and squeezes a shot across goal and just inside the far post.

Double change

It's been the veritable game of two halves here. Gladbach were well on top in the first 45 minutes, even if Wolfsburg took the lead, but the hosts have been by far the better of the two since the restart.

Gladbach are evidently missing the power and presence of big forward Kleindienst, absent here through illness. They haven't caused their hosts too many problems in the final third.

What a goal!

This is such a well-worked goal! Joakim Mæhle picks up the ball wide on the left and immediately spins Hack before driving down the left. He cuts inside and spies Wind in the box with his back to goal. Mæhle slides the ball into his team-mate's feet and sprints forward, anticipating the return pass before slotting in from close range. A superb goal!

Next chance for Gerhardt!

Some beautiful play from Wolfsburg picks apart the Gladbach defence and suddenly Gerhardt is all alone as he bears down on goal. He inexplicably dallies on the ball though, allowing Elvedi to race back and nick the ball off his toe.
52'

Over from Gerhardt

Wimmer whips in a brilliant cross from the right with his weaker right foot and finds Gerhardt in the middle, but the midfielder can't keep his head down and it sails over the bar. That was a great chance for Wolfsburg to extend their lead.

Post!

Amoura, just inside the right-hand side of the Gladbach area, curls a shot with the outside of his right foot towards the far post. Nicolas is well beaten but the ball hits the upright and bounces away.

Half-time: Wolfsburg 1-0 Gladbach

The Wolves lead at the interval thanks to Wind's well-taken penalty in the third minute. Gladbach were on top for much of the half but couldn't find a way through, with Grabara denying Čvančara's attempted chip with what was the Foals' best chance.

First for Wind

The Wolfsburg forward scored a penalty in the Bundesliga for the first time ever. His three previous attempts were all saved - only for him to score on the rebound.

Chance for Dardai!

A swift break forward from the Wolves ends with the ball being rolled to Dardai on the edge of the box. He takes a touch to steady himself before shooting but his effort is deflected out for a corner.

Visitors bossing it

Gladbach are looking good in possession and have seen much more of the ball but they haven't seriously troubled Wolfsburg yet.

Happy hunting ground

The Foals have not lost to Wolfsburg in 10 competitive games and have even won the last four in a row. With two wins and two draws on their last four visits to the Volkswagen Arena, Gladbach are currently on their longest ever unbeaten run away to the Wolves.

Incentive

The last time the Wolves recorded two wins to start a new year was in 2023, when they beat Freiburg 6-0 and then Hertha Berlin 5-0. Incidentally, that was the same year that the Foals last started a new year with consecutive defeats.

Ralph Hasenhüttl on Gladbach

"They are a very strong team that are very good with the ball. They have Tim Kleindienst up front, who is good with and against the ball. Overall, you have to play an outstanding game out of possession if you want to get something -and that has to be the goal."

Gerardo Seoane on Wolfsburg

"Wolfsburg have really found their groove. They have a good mix of experience and physicality, and a very fast frontman with Amoura. We set up defensively against Bayern, but we will head to Wolfsburg looking to play on the front foot."

Onwards and upwards

Both sides currently have 24 points, both improving on their points totals from the same point last season. Gladbach have won two away games so far this season, the same number they managed in the whole of last season.
