Intriguing starts

Mainz are yet to win at home this season, Mönchengladbach - who triumphed 3-2 vs Heidenheim last time out - have not won back-to-back games for 2.5 years, yet both have more points than they did at the same stage in 2023/24.

Mwene: There were positives, but we have to do better

Speaking to the club's official site, defender Phillipp Mwene acknowledged the positives from his side's performance against Leipzig, whilst also highlighting where they need to improve: "Today we always got to the penalty area quite well, had more possession than usual and won the challenges, but Leipzig defended so well that we kept lacking depth. It's bitter not to have won at home yet, we can take a few things from today with us, but we definitely have to do better."

Seoane: We did well despite changes

Speaking after his side's win against Heidenheim, the Gladbach boss spoke of his pleasure with their performance despite defensive changes, telling the club's official website: "We knew that we had to show robustness and were physically on par with one of the most intense teams in the Bundesliga - and that despite the many personnel changes in our defense".

Identical form

In their last four games both sides have won two and lost two, highlighting a need for consistency in both camps. Both have shown they're capable of causing sides problems but have sometimes lacked cutting edge going forward and been prone to defensive mistakes at the other end.

Too close for comfort

The two sides sit just one point apart in the table, with Gladbach sitting in 11th with nine points and Mainz in 12th with eight points. The visitors have won three and lost four this season, while the hosts have won two, drawn two and lost three.
