Marco Richter wins 2022 Bundesliga Goal of the Year!
Hertha Berlin's Marco Richter has won the 2022 Bundesliga Goal of the Year competition for his wonder strike against Bayer Leverkusen that came less than two months after he was diagnosed with testicular cancer.
Richter's strike in Hertha's 2-2 draw with Leverkusen on Matchday 6 of the current 2022/23 campaign was voted for by YOU, the fans, ahead of 14 other stunning efforts.
And it wasn't just the nature of Richter's sumptuous left-footed volley that pulled in the votes, but also the fact that the 25-year-old had undergone surgery on a malignant testicular tumour just weeks earlier.
It had only been announced two months prior that Richter had been diagnosed with cancer and, after scoring a close-range effort on his second game back, he then found the back of the net in remarkable fashion in his third post-op appearance with this long-range beauty.
For a number of reasons, Richter's goal is a truly deserved winner. Congratulations, Marco!
