Bundesliga clubs' 2026/27 pre-season schedules: tours, friendlies and training

Teams are busy preparing for the 2026/27 campaign. Find out how every club is getting on in their pre-season preparations this summer...

The 2026/27 Bundesliga season kicks off on Friday 28 August, when champions Bayern Munich begin the defence of their title at home to VfB Stuttgart. For most teams, their first competitive fixture will be the DFB Cup first round on 21-24 August. It's all a week later than the previous year due to the FIFA World Cup 2026, which concluded on 19 July.

As Bundesliga champions and DFB Cup winners, Bayern will also look to retain the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup away at Borussia Dortmund on 22 August. Their DFB Cup fixtures have been moved to 1/2 September.

18 August: Jonas Urbig on learning from Manuel Neuer and Sven Ulreich

Speaking to Bayern members' magazine ‘51’ in a recent interview that appears on the club's official website, Urbig said: "When I ask them something, it’s not with the thought: ‘Tell me how to do it, I want to be like you.’ Rather, it’s: ‘Show me how to do it, and I’ll pick out what suits my own style and my own character.’ For me, that’s a completely natural process; I don’t have to consciously control it."

Schalke beaten by Real Madrid

Schalke lost their final pre-season game of the summer 3-0 against Real Madrid in a friendly to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Royal Blues' home - the VELTINS-Arena - which was officially opened on 13 August 2001. Kylian Mbappé and Dean Huijsen got Madrid off to a flyer in the first half before summer arrival Carlos Espí completed the rout for Los Blancos.

Hoffenheim's pre-season concludes

After Saturday's 3-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur, Hoffenheim mustered a 2-2 draw against their English Premier League counterparts in a behind closed doors friendly this time out. Adam Hložek and Valentin Gendrey found the net for the Sinsheim club in north London.

Paderborn prevail against Cologne, twice

Paderborn forward Steffen Tigges struck a hat-trick in the second of two games against his former side today. The Bundesliga newcomers won 4-3, overturning a 3-1 deficit, against the Billy Goats after their earlier 3-2 victory.

Elversberg win big

16 August: Koch suffers concussion

Eintracht Frankfurt captain Robin Koch suffered a mild concussion following a clash during his side's friendly with Brentford on Saturday and is set to go through the corresponding recovery protocol. The good news for Eagles fans is that medical tests on Koch did not reveal any structural damage.

Hoffenheim suffer defeat

Although close to taking the lead through Adam Hložek, Hoffenheim were on the receiving end of a 3-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur. Richarlison opened the scoring before Mikey Moore struck twice in the second period. Hložek also found the crossbar but the Sinsheim club were unable to find a way past their English Premier League counterparts.

Frankfurt's pre-season ends in defeat

Former Freiburg attacker Kevin Schade struck twice as Brentford put seven unanswered goals past Eintracht Frankfurt, who suffered their first defeat of pre-season under returning head coach Adi Hütter.

Leverkusen win in Newcastle

Bayer Leverkusen rebounded from their 2-1 loss against Nottingham Forest with a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United. Ibrahim Maza (r.) put the Bundesliga side ahead after one minute, but they conceded on the stroke of half-time before Victor Boniface secured a win for Carles Martínez's side.

Defeat for Union

Union Berlin's final pre-season outing ended with a 4-2 defeat against English Premier League side Ipswich Town. Summer signing Zeno Van den Bosch fired the Berliners into an early lead, but they conceded three unanswered goals before Josip Juranovic scored a consolation as Mauro Lustrinelli's side suffered a third loss in their preparation for 2026/27.

Elversberg hit Lorient for four

Łukasz Poręba fired Bundesliga newcomers Elversberg into an early lead against France's Lorient, who equalised through Mamadou Koné. Re-energised after the break, Noah Darvich and Luca Schnellbacher gave the Bundesliga side a two-goal cushion before Cole Campbell completed the 4-1 rout.

Mainz impress against Bournemouth

To conclude their pre-season preparations, Mainz put on a clinical masterclass in front of goal to beat English Premier League side Bournemouth, with goals from Sheraldo Becker and William Bøving either side of Evanilson's strike securing a 2-1 victory.

Bayern's summer signings shine against Leipzig

Germany's record champions overcame Bundesliga counterparts RB Leipzig in their penultimate pre-season friendly. Brajan Gruda equalised for the Saxony club after Bayern took an early lead through Luis Díaz, but goals from Nathaniel Brown and Jamal Musiala, assisted by debutant Ismail Saibari, secured a 3-1 victory as Vincent Kompany's charges signed off in style.

Freiburg secured a 3-0 victory over UEFA Conference League winners Crystal Palace with substitutes Derry Scherhant and Lucas Höler securing the Breisgau club a 3-0 victory - after extra-time - after Yannik Engelhardt opened the scoring.

Augsburg suffer defeat in Leeds

One week before their DFB Cup first round tie against Bundesliga 2 side Energie Cottbus, Augsburg suffered 4-0 defeat against Leeds United, with former Hoffenheim midfielder Anton Stach and former Wolfsburg striker Lukas Nmecha both scoring.

15 August: Werder beaten

Daniel Thioune's Bremen drew a blank as their pre-season draws to a close following a 1-0 loss against France's Auxerre. Up next for the Green-Whites is a DFB Cup first round clash against fifth-tier side Lüneburger Hansa on 22 August.

Bayern trio return from summer break

Eberl discusses Palhinha exit

With João Palhinha tipped to leave Bayern Munich this summer, board member for sport Max Eberl revealed there had been contact from a Premier League suitor, before he poured water on the possibility of a move. “Aston Villa approached us regarding João Palhinha, but there will be no agreement,” he explained.

Dortmund will not sign El Mala, confirms Ricken

Freiburg to face Motherwell in UEFA Conference League play-off

Freiburg's Conference League play-off opponents were confirmed last night when Scottish side Motherwell beat HJK Helsinki from Finland 2-0 to win 3-1 on aggregate. Freiburg will travel to Motherwell on 20 August before hosting the Scots on the 27th. The winner of the tie will progress to the league phase of the competition.

14 August: Saibari to be unveiled

Bayern's summer signing Ismael Saibari is due to be officially introduced to the media at 12 pm CEST today. The 25-year-old Moroccan had a stellar World Cup and is currently working his way back to full fitness, having picked up an injury at the tournament. He joined from PSV Eindhoven last month on a five-year deal.

Big weekend of action ahead

Teams across the Bundesliga will be playing their final pre-season friendly matches on Saturday and Sunday before the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup and first round of the DFB Cup the following weekend. Bayern Munich vs. RB Leipzig (Saturday, 3.30pm), Borussia Dortmund vs. Roma (Saturday, 5.30pm) and Schalke vs. Real Madrid (Sunday, 5pm) are just some of the big friendly clashes in store.

13 August: Leverkusen still in Nottingham

After their narrow defeat at the Premier League outfit in Wednesday evening's friendly, Bayer Leverkusen trained at Nottingham Forest's training ground on Thursday - and will do so on Friday before heading up England's East Coast to face Newcastle United in their final pre-season clash on Saturday (kick-off 4pm CEST).

Summer signing Otávio made the scoresheet in Eintracht Frankfurt’s 5-1 win at FSV Frankfurt. Younes Ebnoutalib, Jonathan Burkardt, Malik Pimpong and Ritsu Doan completed the scoring for Adi Hütter’s side, with George Iorga netting a consolation for FSV.

Previewing the game for the Gladbach website, Foals head coach Eugen Polanski said: "The main objective of this friendly is to recreate as many in-game situations as possible. In Velbert, we're facing an opponent who will play with high intensity. Playing there is always tough, which gives us the perfect opportunity to test our patterns of play in conditions that are as close to a competitive game as possible."

12 August: Three clubs in action

Three Bundesliga sides are in friendly action on Wednesday. Borussia Mönchengladbach kick things off with a trip to German fifth-tier side SSVg Velbert (6pm CEST), before Eintracht Frankfurt face city rivals FSV Frankfurt half an hour later. Last but not least, Bayer Leverkusen take on English Premier League club Nottingham Forest at the City Ground, kicking off at 8:45pm CEST.

There are no friendlies involving Bundesliga clubs on Tuesday, but Bayer Leverkusen are back in action on Wednesday as they take on English Premier League side Nottingham Forest. Die Werkself have received some welcome news ahead of their trip to the City Ground, with Jarell Quansah and Exequiel Palacios both returning from their respective post-World Cup breaks.

'Easy decision' for Pejčinović

Zagadou's new Stuttgart team-mate, Dženan Pejčinović, says it was an "easy decision" to join VfB from relegated Wolfsburg. In an interview with the club's official website, the 21-year-old striker said: "It quickly became clear to me and my family that this was a move I wanted to make. I had very good, honest discussions with [board member for sport] Fabian Wohlgemuth and [coach] Sebastian Hoeneß. They both made a positive impression on me."

11 August: Setback for Zagadou

VfB Stuttgart defender Dan-Axel Zagadou, who has endured a torrid time with injuries in recent seasons, is set for another spell on the sidelines after suffering a hamstring injury in the Swabians' recent friendly victory over Everton. The 27-year-old will be unavailable "over the coming weeks", according to a statement on the Stuttgart website.

The Bundesliga champions have been boosted by the return of Ismael Saibari, Jamal Musiala, Lennart Karl, Serge Gnabry and Alphonso Davies to Säbener Straße. Linton Maina on chemistry with El Mala and Wagner

The 26-year-old Cologne man may have hinted how he is likely to deployed by head coach René Wagner in the upcoming season. Speaking after scoring in the Billy Goats' friendly victory over Real Sociedad on 8 August, Maina explained: "Saïd is good in one-on-one situations, which is why he stays a bit wider on the left. And I try to stay connected in the centre and be there when the long passes come to Ragy (Ache)." The No.37 also revealed he has a good relationship with Wagner, revealing: “We get along well [...] He trusts me, and now I’m trying to repay that trust with good performances.”

Vincent Kompany: 'It can always be your best season'

Bayern Munich scored a record 122 goals on their way to retaining the Bundesliga title in 2025/26, finishing 16 points ahead closest rivals Borussia Dortmund. Looking ahead to the new season, head coach Vincent Kompany believes Germany's record champions can better themselves. Koch named Frankfurt captain

New Frankfurt head coach Adi Hütter has named Robin Koch as the team's captain for 2026/27, the club confirmed on Thursday. The 30-year-old centre-back also skippered the side last season following Kevin Trapp's departure in summer 2025. "It’s a role that makes me incredibly proud and, above all, brings me great joy," Koch said in a statement. "At the same time, I’m aware of the responsibility that comes with wearing the captain’s armband at Eintracht Frankfurt."

6 August: Undav 'positive' ahead of new season

After impressing for Germany at the FIFA World Cup 2026, Deniz Undav is turning his attention back on racking up the goals for VfB Stuttgart. "I feel that the interest in me has increased as a result of the World Cup, but I see that as a positive," the forward said at the Swabians' pre-season training camp in Grassau. "I feel settled at VfB and in the city. In general we get great support from the fans, and it's a nice feeling to be able to make people happy."

Eintracht's summer signing is keen to follow in the footsteps of compatriot Jay-Jay Okocha, who established himself as a Frankfurt cult hero during his time at the club between 1991 and 1996. Günter to captain Freiburg

Defender Christian Günter has been retained as Freiburg captain for the upcoming season. Maximilian Eggestein and Vincenzo Grifo will both serve as vice-captains this term, forming a very experienced leadership group in the process. Kovač raring to go

After Borussia Dortmund began pre-season training, coach Niko Kovač told the club website: "If you break it down by the three competitions we had, you can be satisfied with the Bundesliga season. In the two cup competitions—the Champions League and the DFB Cup—we have room for improvement. We certainly want to perform better there than we did last year. Every single player can improve—technically, tactically, and physically."

Davies back in Munich

The Bayern defender is already back in Bavaria following Canada's elimination in the round of 16 and did some laps around the training ground at Säbener Straße alongside Lennart Karl and Serge Gnabry as he prepares to begin a full pre-season, having missed 2025's preparations while recovering from injury.

Saibari visits Säbener Straße

Bayern's new Moroccan attacker Ismael Saibari got his first look at his new club's training facilities since joining, although he's still yet to see the Allianz Arena. "I'm really excited about the Allianz Arena. I've never played there before. The first time will definitely be special," he explained.

Gnabry & Karl train

Bayern's squad - minus those on post-World Cup holidays - aren't due back in Munich until next week, but Serge Gnabry and Lennart Karl were both out training at Säbener Straße on Tuesday as they continue their rehab from injuries that ruled them out of the summer's tournament.

Bayer Leverkusen began pre-season training on Tuesday with Carles Martínez putting his new side through their paces for the first time. The new coach said: "It was great to finally be on the pitch with the players and to interact with the fans after training."

Around 2,000 fans gathered at the training ground around Deutsche Bank Park as Eintracht held their first training session of pre-season on Monday. "The atmosphere was amazing. If we'd allowed in 5,000 people, then 5,000 people would've come," said head coach Adi Hütter on his return to the Frankfurt helm.
