Late Jeffrey Gouweleeuw winner sees Augsburg past Arminia Bielefeld
Augsburg collected their second away win of the season with Jeffrey Gouweleeuw on target in the final minutes against promoted Arminia Bielefeld.
Arminia Bielefeld 0-1 Augsburg
Goals: 0-1 Gouweleeuw (85')
Bielefeld and Augsburg were meeting for the first time in the German top-flight and the two sides had managed just one first-half goal between them so far this season. So, it was no surprise that the scores remained level after an even first 45. Marco Richter's early blocked shot was a tester for the home team's defence with Augsburg providing early pressure, but Bielefeld responded well. Ritsu Doan has been their main source of creativity in attack and it was his mazy run and pass to Sven Schipplock which led to the hosts' first shot on goal - blocked by the Augsburg defence. Doan curled a shot wide himself on the half-hour mark as Bielefeld grew into the game. The away side switched to a three-man backline for the first time this season, and it helped them stay strong at the back with Rafal Gikiewicz forced to make just one save. Richter almost provided the opener just before the break, but his shot was deflected behind.
The second half continued in similar fashion with neither side able to add the finishing touch in front of goal. Richter snatched at a shot just before the 60th minute with his effort from 20 yards whipping past Stefan Ortega's goal. Fabian Kunze glanced a header wide from a corner for Bielefeld as the game began to open up once again, with Marcel Hartel firing wide at the near post from Fabian Klos' cut-back moments later. Klos had a big chance in the final 10 minutes with space in front of goal, but couldn't get sufficient pace behind his strike. As the home side threatened, it was Augsburg who stole the points in the final five minutes. Daniel Caligiuri passed in front of goal for Gouweleeuw to slide home having raced up from the back.
