Bayern Munich suffer first defeat of the season against Aston Villa in the UEFA Champions League
Vincent Kompany was on the end of a first competitive defeat this season, with Bayern Munich going down to an Aston Villa side for whom Jhon Duran netted a 79th minute winner to settled a closely-fought affair.
Aston Villa 1-0 Bayern Munich Goals: 1-0 Duran 79' (assist: Torres)
These sides' only previous meeting came in the 1982 European Cup final, in which Villa triumphed. Bayern - fresh from a 1-1 draw against Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen at the weekend - looked to avert a slip-up at the home of the Premier League outfit this time around by taking the game to their opponents early on. Kane tested the reflexes of goalkeeper Emi Martínez with a close-range header, before Villa found the net through Pau Torres. The problem on both of those occasions, was that each event was declared null and void because of respective offsides. Villa's cause was then hampered by the loss of Jacob Ramsey, before Bayern went close with a stinging Michael Olise drive that Martínez palmed over. The clear-cut chances in the opening 45 minutes failed to flow, yet that didn't stop this even contest from fascinating the packed crowd inside Villa Park.
Bayern and Villa produced 12 goals between them in respective Matchday 1 wins, however, an opener here often looked a distant prospect. Kompany introduced livewire Jamal Musiala at the break as the visitors sought to inject some extra pace into proceedings. The Germany international was soon combining with Kane, but failed to keep his footing at the crucial moment when in on goal. Just when the sides appeared set on a path for a scoreless draw, Unai Emery's men struck with the winning goal eleven minutes from time. A long ball from Pau Torres found the onrushing John Duran, who spotted Manuel Neuer stranded at the edge of hia area. The Villa substitute duly lifted the ball over the Bayern keeper and in, to the unbridled delight of the the home fans. Martínez then denied Mathys Tel and Kane at the death to ensure a second win of the league phase for the Villains. After a first defeat of the season for Bayern, the Bundesliga giants will need to lift themselves in this competition with a visit to Barcelona pencilled in for 23 October.
Match stats

Villa lost their previous game against German opposition, going down 3-1 to Hamburg in their 2008/09 UEFA Cup groups. They have now won their other four.
Bayern are six-time European champions, last winning the Champions League in 2019/20.
After defeating Zagreb on Matchday 1, Bayern have now won their opening Champions League game in each of the past 20 seasons - a competition record.
Leon Bailey registered 28 goals and 21 assists in 119 Bundesliga appearances for Bayer Leverkusen, including three goals in nine league meetings with Bayern.

More from Kimmich
"It's always difficult to create chances against an opponent that sits deep. We had a good chance by Serge in the first half and another chance by Harry at the end. There were definitely situations that could have led to goals."
Neuer's thoughts
"We didn't have a bad game, not our best game either. That can happen in football. They did well and made it difficult for us. We managed to create chances but unfortunately couldn't take them"
"We made too many little mistakes. We weren't quite as sharp for the second balls as we have been in recent weeks. In attack - even if not everything was perfect - we had some very good chances. Not that many, but the ones we had were actually really good."
"If I'm objective, we started the game well, we had a good 15 minutes then lost the tempo a bit. Nevertheless we didn't concede big chances. The second half was much better, we had control, made good deep runs and created big chances but couldn't convert them. Congratulations to Aston Villa. We won't stop here, we'll learn from today and move on"
Bayern lose their first match under Vincent Kompany and it's thanks to some incredible heroics from Emi Martinez. There were positives to take for Bayern who controlled large parts of the match and really should have equalised, but they head home with a first defeat and will have to come up with a response.
Wow! Out of nowhere Torres picks out Jhon Durán and the sub does it again, Neuer's off his line and the no.9 hits it first time over the Bayern captain and into the back of the net.
After substitute Maatsen tries his luck from range and one end, Musiala has his first try in the Villa box. A mazy dribble is stopped just when it looked like Villa could be in big trouble.
Last ditch Laimer
Barkley has an instant impact in a dangerous position and tries to feed Watkins with a golden chance, Laimer just gets a foot in, otherwise that's a goal.
With Bayern in control, Unai Emery makes two changes. Onana, who appeared to be struggling with an injury, is replaced by Barkley. Bailey, who was a sub himself, comes off for former Dortmund fullback Ian Maatsen.
Bayern keep working away in their opponent's half and Gnabry finds Olise with a pull back. The Frenchman manages two shots, but Torres blocks them both.
Villa kick us back off, and thankfully for them, Onana is continuing after looking injured in the first-half. Bayern have made one change, with Jamal Musiala replacing Kingsley Coman.
Kick-off!
Half-time: Aston Villa 0-0 Bayern
An intriguing first-half ends level thanks to the linesman and a top performance from Emi Martinez. Both coaches will be happy with what they've seen, but Kompany will want his side to create better chances, and be wary of the constantly dangerous Watkins.
Watkins has another battle with Upamecano for a ball forward but the Frenchman wins this one.

Bayern getting close
Olise provides the skill of the half by tricking an on-running Tielemans with a deft control and he then plays Gnabry in. Gnabry finds Laimer in the six yard box, but Martinez again responds brilliantly and smothers the ball.

No let up from Bayern
Villa are having plenty of the ball now but can't get out their own half with Bayern defending man-to-man and giving them no room to manoeuvre.

Olise denied by a wonder save!
Olise comes in off the right and unleashes a wicked left footed shot towards the top corner of the Villa net. Martinez makes a sublime save to keep the match scoreless, and then deals with the corner.
Cheeky from Kimmich
With a free kick around 40 yards from goal and everyone queued up in the box, Kimmich tries to catch Martinez out with a shot but it's easily collected.
Kane releases Laimer down the right with a clever first time pass and Bayern are away. Laimer's final ball isn't up to scratch, though, and it's deflected into Martinez's arms.

More trouble for Villa?
Key midfielder Onana appears to be clutching his hamstring and looking towards the bench. He's continuing for now, but losing him would be a big blow.

Kane furious with Gnabry!
Gnabry is played in by Laimer and has Kane free to square to, but opts to shoot from a tight angle and a huge chance goes to waste.
Ramsey looks in trouble and won't be able to continue. Former Leverkusen man Leon Bailey looks set to replace him.
25'
Ramsey at fault
Replays show Ramsey had needlessly wandered past Kimmich in the build up, otherwise Villa would be ahead.
Villa think they have the lead, but it's offside!
Pau Torres looks to have scored Villa's first-ever Champions League-era goal, but a VAR check stops the celebrations as there was an offside in the build-up.
...cleared again. Olise's curler was sent out the box before Laimer's wild shot went out of play.

Villa Park up in arms
Watkins again is found with a ball forward and tangles with Upamecano with the two the last men before Neuer. Referee Radu Petrescu waves off a potential free-kick and red card, and the home crowd aren't happy.
12'
Big chance for Watkins
Digne finds pace on the left to send in a cross and it finds Watkins in the air. Kim does just enough to make sure his shot is off target.

Neuer alert
Bayern are comfortable in Villa's half but all of a sudden they lose the ball and Watkins is played through in space. No bother, Neuer makes a trip to the halfway line to cut out the danger.

Almost a golden chance
Gnabry ghosts in behind Villa's defence brilliantly but his ball across to Kane for a tap in is just too short.
8'
Villa feeding on scraps
Villa try to fashion a first chance as Tielemans searches for Watkins but Bayern are quick to react.
Kane saved by the offside flag
Kimmich whips a wonderous cross into Kane and he should head home from yards out, however, the flag is raised for offside.
Bayern keep the pressure on and set up Kimmich on the edge of the box. He doesn't make a proper connection and it's a simple save for Martinez.

Commanding from Onana
Villa's 6ft 5in midfielder raises highest to clear a dangerous corner from Olise.

Early corner
Gnabry chases down Digne and wins a corner for Bayern.

We're underway
Michael Olise kicks us off at a deafening Villa Park.
Olise homecoming
Despite playing for France, Michael Olise was born in England and grew up there. This will be his first trip back since leaving Crystal Palace for Bayern in the summer. Since that move he's feature in all seven of their matches, scoring five goals and registering three assists.
Villa Park fright
We've only just entered October, but the sight of Kane will already scare Villa's home crowd. In six appearances at Villa Park for Tottenham, he recorded five goals and two assists.
Golden Boot winner Kane was a doubt for the match after picking up a knock in the 1-1 draw to Leverkusen last time out. He's not only fit enough for the squad, but also to start.
Villa's Unai Emery causes the biggest shock with his one change from the 2-2 draw against Ipswich being Leon Bailey out for the rarely-used Jaden Philogene. Vincent Kompany makes two changes from the 1-1 draw against Leverkusen with Joshua Kimmich replacing Raphaël Guerreiro at right back and Konrad Laimer taking his spot in midfield. The other swap is Kingsley Coman replacing Jamal Musiala.
Apart from the slight concern over Kane, there's no other injury news to report from Bayern. Only three first-team players were absent as they travelled to Birmingham on Tuesday. Hiroki Ito has started running again after his broken metatarsal but is still some way off a return. Right-backs Josip Stanišić and Sacha Boey are also out for the long-term with knee injuries.
Is Kane fit?
That was the big question on the lips of several reporters at Tuesday's press conference, after the England captain went off after a knock to his ankle against Leverkusen on Saturday. Kompany didn't want to give a definitive answer but stated: "Harry trained today, and things went well. But we need to wait and see till tomorrow and be sure things stay like that. Then we can calmly make the right decision. Hopefully everything stays fine."
"I think everything Aston Villa do is very clear. They're very well organised. You can see what they want to do in every phase of the game. They're compact. It's a similar style to Leverkusen. Being compact between the lines, how they pose a threat on the counter, the runs they want to make in behind. They do that very well, which is why they did so well last season."
"I was very young when I came to Arsenal. Then when I went to West Brom, I didn't get much playing time. It didn't work out. But I got to meet some great people and was motivated to show what I'm capable of. A tough time always makes you hungrier and more motivated. I learned you need to come through good and bad times and also learn from them."
Gnabry on life under Kompany
"The coach demands a certain drive, high intensity so that we don't allow the opponent any chances. That's what we're about at the moment. It feels great that we're so dominant again. We didn't manage that over long stretches in recent years."
"It's against one of the best teams in the world. They're one of the favourites for the tournament. We want to show our best. It'll be a big challenge for us to stop them. We need adapt to their tactical approach and try to carry out our plan."
The Aston Villa squad features Ian Maatsen (pictured left), who spent the second half of last season on loan to Borussia Dortmund - and played all 90 minutes of Dortmund's 2-0 win in Munich in March.
Aston Villa also drew at the weekend, 2-2 at newly promoted Ipswich. They are fifth in the English Premier League table just two points behind leaders Liverpool after six matches.
Brilliant Bayern form
The 1-1 draw with Leverkusen marked the first time all season Bayern had failed to win in any competition. Vincent Kompany's side remain top of the Bundesliga.

Talking of being back in England
Michael Olise also returns to an English ground for the first time since swapping Crystal Palace for Bayern this summer. He smashed two goals in the win over Dinamo and has certainly hit the ground running in the Bundesliga too.
Harry back in England
Bayern striker Harry Kane has scored eight times against Aston Villa in 12 appearances for his former club, Tottenham. Perhaps more significant is that he smashed four goals in Bayern's 9-2 trouncing of Dinamo Zagreb a fortnight ago to take his UEFA Champions League tally to 33 - becoming the top English goalscorer of all time in the competition.
Bayern have a historic score to settle in Birmingham, as the only previous meeting between the two sides came in the final of the 1982 European Cup. Aston Villa were 1-0 winners back then in Rotterdam.
