Despite seeing his side pick up his first win of the season last weekend against Arminia Bielefeld playing with a three-man defence, Adi Hütter reverted to a back four once again for the trip to Augsburg. Ruben Vargas had the game's first shot inside 10 minutes but dragged his effort wide, before fellow Switzerland international Denis Zakaria saw a shot blocked from close range at the other end. Gladbach took the half over from that point, having the next five attempts on goal of the game, but none truly tested the skills of Rafal Gikiewicz in the home side's goal. The best chance of the half came in the final minutes as Daniel Caligiuri's free-kick from wide on the left flank bounced through and off the far post, before Robert Gumny fired the rebound wide. Iago went off injured for the home side with a shoulder issue before the break, with Mads Pedersen on in his place.

Alassane Plea almost had Gladbach in front but the Frenchman was marginally offside from Lars Stindl's pass through to him before he slotted home. The Foals continued to control the early stages of the second half, but both sides were struggling to find their flow in attack. Joe Scally saw a shot blocked in the Augsburg area while Stindl forced Gikiewicz to save with a long-range chip effort, with Gladbach looking the most likely to break the deadlock. Just as the fixture which had never previously finished goalless looked destined to do so, Augsburg went in front with 10 to play. Vargas coasted in down the right and pulled back for substitute Niederlechner to fire home. The Foals pushed for an equaliser, but the hosts held firm to secure their first three points of 2021/22.
