Cologne leapfrog Augsburg with Ellyes Skhiri, Eric Martel and Linton Maina securing the points
Cologne traded places with Augsburg in the Bundesliga with goals from Ellyes Skhiri, Eric Martel and Linton Maina earning them a 3-1 win in Bavaria, Ruben Vargas' effort not enough for the hosts.
Augsburg 1-3 Cologne
Goals: 0-1 Skhiri 7' (assist: Chabot), 0-2 Martel 16' (assist: Schindler), 1-2 Vargas 29' (assist: Bauer), 1-3 Maina 59' (assist: Ljubicic)
Cologne certainly looked the hungrier in the opening exchanges, and their efforts were swiftly rewarded. Skhiri turned in Julian Chabot’s touch back from Florian Kainz’s cross, and after a close review for a potential offside, the goal was allowed to stand. Less than 10 minutes later, Cologne doubled their lead when Kingsley Schindler sent Martel clear, and he slotted the ball through Rafal Gikiewicz’s legs from a tight angle. Augsburg rolled up their sleeves and crafted a route back into the game after half an hour when Vargas got the rub of the green following a corner and he took his chance clinically.
Cologne were apparently unmoved by Augsburg’s goal, though, and continued to look comfortable, even more so when Maina restored their two-goal advantage on the hour mark. Augsburg coach Enrico Maaßen shuffled things up with three changes and one of the replacements – Ivan Cardona – almost grabbed them a lifeline, but he could only find the side netting. A Dion Beljo effort also hit the outside of the net as the hosts doubled their efforts to reduce the arrears once again, but there was to be no way back as Cologne held on to end a six-game winless run.

- Martel’s goal was his first in the Bundesliga, on his 23rd appearance.
