Unfortunate Maximilian Wöber own goal gives France win
Maximilian Wöber and Marcel Sabitzer were among 12 Bundesliga-based Austria players to suffer a narrow defeat to France in UEFA Euro 2024 Group D.
Austria 0-1 France
Goals: 0-1 Wöber 38' (o.g.)
France had the first chance in a keenly contested encounter, with Kylian Mbappé's shot from a tight angle turned around the post by Patrick Pentz, who recently left Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen. RB Leipzig's Christoph Baumgartner came agonisingly close to giving Austria a shock lead, but he wasn't quite able to guide a shot past Mike Maignan when played in stylishly by Borussia Dortmund's Marcel Sabitzer. Max Wöber, who spent the last season on loan at Borussia Mönchengladbach, was the unfortunate man to break the deadlock, heading Mbappé's cross into his own net. Mbappé spurned a big chance for a second shortly after the restart when through on Pentz. Bayern Munich's Dayot Upamecano and his fellow French defenders capably kept Austria at bay as they probed for an equaliser in an intense end-to-end final phase. France therefore join the Netherlands atop Group D with three points.
