Axel Witsel is optimistic Borussia Dortmund can hang onto top spot in the Bundesliga ahead of the Klassiker after a matchday which saw BVB beat Wolfsburg whilst Bayern Munich were held by Freiburg.

Dortmund left it late against the Wolves, with Paco Alcacer scoring twice in injury time to seal a 2-0 win. Bayern and Freiburg drew 1-1 in the Black Forest, so Die Schwarzgelben have a two-point cushion ahead of what should be a thrilling top-of-the-table clash next Saturday.

Question: Axel Witsel, Paco Alcacer has now scored five goals for Dortmund this season which came in the 90th minute or later…

Axel Witsel: “Paco’s crazy. I call him El Matador cos he doesn’t need a lot of chances to score. He did the same thing here against Augsburg and in the last minute again today. He hit it with a little bit more force cos he was closer to the goal.”

Question: Dortmund reclaimed top spot with the win. Can you stay there?

Witsel: “It’s a really important win and everyone knows our next game is in Munich. Nobody expected Bayern to drop points in Freiburg before the games. Now we’re the leader we don’t need to change. We’ll go to Munich with the same motivation and do everything to win.”

Question: Wolfsburg made you work hard. You were without Marco Reus who became a father today. How big an impact did that have?

Witsel: “Games after the international break aren’t easy with a lot of players being away. We didn’t have Marco [Reus] and that’s not easy. We played well but I think we could do better in the final third with more crosses and shots.”

Question: Winning ugly is a skill many past champions have had to acquire…

Witsel: “We need a win like this. We knew at half-time that everyone needed to stay calm and we needed to be patient and stay focused until the end. It was good to score two goals but also to keep a clean sheet.”

Question: The fans were in full voice against Wolfsburg. How much did this help you to keep pushing until the final minutes?

Witsel: “The Yellow Wall is always amazing no matter who we play. We could play a seventh division team from Belgium and it would still be full!”

Question: Dortmund play Bayern in a championship six-pointer next Saturday. Can you win the Klassiker at the Allianz Arena?

Witsel: “I prefer to do my speaking on the pitch. It’s gonna be a hard game there but we did it here so why not there? We have to go there with the ambition to take three points. It’s dangerous there and you can lose so we have to give everything we can. I think we’ll have the same motivation, maybe even more. Every game is a final now and we have to do everything to try to win every game step by step.”
