Bayer Leverkusen's winning start to UEFA Europa League ended by Marseille

Bayer Leverkusen lost for the first time in this season's UEFA Europa League, going down 1-0 to French outfit Marseille at the BayArena.

Bayer Leverkusen 0-1 Marseille
Goals: 0-1 Gouiri 77'

Leverkusen started the day second in the league-phase table after wins over Celje, Lech Poznań and OFI Crete, but had Mark Flekken to thank for keeping Marseille at bay early on, as the Dutchman got the better of Amine Gouiri in a one-on-one situation.

Miguel Gutiérrez struck the woodwork via a deflection with Bayer's best chance of the first half, while Patrik Schick headed over from 10 yards in the second.

Marseille - who had arrived in Germany on a three-match losing run in Europe - responded in kind as Geoffrey Kondogbia tested Flekken, before Gouiri went one better with a decisive finish into the far corner.

Despite the result, Leverkusen remain in the automatic knockout phase qualification places ahead of a trip to Dinamo Zagreb on 26 November.

As I always say - referring to our own situation in Leverkusen as well - it’s all about the process and making daily improvements. It seems to me that they are succeeding in doing just that."
