Bayern Munich and Harry Kane ready for Benfica in the Champions League
Three big wins, three clean sheets: Bayern Munich and their English goal machine Harry Kane are in fearsome form ahead of their UEFA Champions League Matchday 4 clash at home to Benfica on Wednesday.
Vincent Kompany's side may be in need of a boost in the Champions League following defeats in their last two outings - 1-0 away to Aston Villa on Matchday 2 and 4-1 in Barcelona last time out - but they could hardly be doing better in domestic action and look all set to put things right on the continent when they play host to Portuguese giants Benfica on Wednesday.
Kane can't stop scoring
Led by English goal machine Harry Kane, who was honoured with the Gerd Müller Trophy (shared with Kylian Mbappé) for Europe's most prolific striker at the recent Ballon d'Or ceremony, Bayern Munich have swept all before them in the three matches since their rough night in Barcelona, scoring an eye-watering 12 goals and conceding precisely none.
Setting them up too
Kane was on the scoresheet on Bundesliga Matchday 8, when Bayern returned from Spain to hand Bochum a 5-0 beating, and the Englishman then turned provider as he set up the prodigious Jamal Musiala up for the first of three goals in the 4-0 win away to Mainz in the second round of the DFB Cup.
Bayern best Berlin
The Englishman then rocketed back to the top of the Bundesliga scorers chart by hitting his 10th and 11th goals as the Bavarians kept another clean sheet - and went three points clear at the top of the table - with a 3-0 Matchday 9 win at home to 1. FC Union Berlin.
"Physically, mentally - playing in this type of team, you know, I'm playing at, I feel like, a really high level at the moment but of course without the players around me creating the chances it wouldn't be possible," said the England captain after yet another incisive performance for Bayern. "The team is doing great, we're playing a really great style of football. With the ball, without the ball, we're making it difficult for teams, and when you're dominating a game like we did today, you're going to get chances and I always back myself to put some away."
Kompany: "It takes a player like him"
Meanwhile Kompany underlined Kane's value to the team as they look to take their blistering form continental and return to winning ways in the Champions League.
"I see a lot of practice. When he gets behind the ball and shoots I can recognise something he is practising many many days in training," said the Belgian coach, who is enjoying a record-breaking start at the helm of the Rekordmeister. "But of course it takes a team to create the situations and it takes a player like him to be confident and he has done it so many times for Bayern Munich and that's something that adds a lot of value to us of course."
