Harry Kane scored one and made another as Bayern beat Manchester United 4-3 in their UEFA Champions League Group A opener at the Allianz Arena.
Bayern Munich 4-3 Manchester United
Goals: 1-0 Sané 28' (assist: Kane), 2-0 Gnabry 32' (assist: Musiala), 2-1 Hojlund 49' (assist: Rashford), 3-1 Kane (pen. 53'), 3-2 Casemiro 88', 4-2 Tel 90'+2 (assist: Kimmich), 4-3 Casemiro 90'+5 (assist: Fernandes)
Bayern went into the game unbeaten in a competition record 34 group-stage matches, and on a record run of 13 straight wins at this stage in the competition. Alphonso Davies and Sven Ulreich had to be alert to an early effort from Christian Eriksen, but the record Bundesliga champions soon began to flex their muscles. Leroy Sané got the all-important opener, combining with Kane before firing through the legs of André Onana. Serge Gnabry hit a second four minutes later, thanks to a superb solo run from Jamal Musiala. Sané threatened again on the stroke of half-time, but couldn't find the finish to match his trademark run inside.
Rasmus Højlund's deflected strike brought United back to within a goal of Bayern, only for Kane to restore his side's two-goal advantage seven minutes into the second half. After a VAR review adjudged Eriksen to have handled in the box, Bayern's new No.9 made no mistake from the penalty spot for 3-1. Another moment of Musiala magic set up Sané for a shot against the crossbar. Onana thwarted Kane and Sané as Thomas Tuchel's side assumed complete control. However, United managed to evoke memories of the 1999 final when Casemiro scored a late brace, but a goal between times from teenaged substitute Mathys Tel ensured Bayern got over the line with the win.
