Bayern Munich 4-3 Manchester United
Goals: 1-0 Sané 28' (assist: Kane), 2-0 Gnabry 32' (assist: Musiala), 2-1 Hojlund 49' (assist: Rashford), 3-1 Kane (pen. 53'), 3-2 Casemiro 88', 4-2 Tel 90'+2 (assist: Kimmich), 4-3 Casemiro 90'+5 (assist: Fernandes)

Bayern went into the game unbeaten in a competition record 34 group-stage matches, and on a record run of 13 straight wins at this stage in the competition. Alphonso Davies and Sven Ulreich had to be alert to an early effort from Christian Eriksen, but the record Bundesliga champions soon began to flex their muscles. Leroy Sané got the all-important opener, combining with Kane before firing through the legs of André Onana. Serge Gnabry hit a second four minutes later, thanks to a superb solo run from Jamal Musiala. Sané threatened again on the stroke of half-time, but couldn't find the finish to match his trademark run inside.

Rasmus Højlund's deflected strike brought United back to within a goal of Bayern, only for Kane to restore his side's two-goal advantage seven minutes into the second half. After a VAR review adjudged Eriksen to have handled in the box, Bayern's new No.9 made no mistake from the penalty spot for 3-1. Another moment of Musiala magic set up Sané for a shot against the crossbar. Onana thwarted Kane and Sané as Thomas Tuchel's side assumed complete control. However, United managed to evoke memories of the 1999 final when Casemiro scored a late brace, but a goal between times from teenaged substitute Mathys Tel ensured Bayern got over the line with the win.

Match stats

  • Kane has five goals and two assists in six competitive appearances for Bayern.
  • Sané has scored four times in all competitions so far this season.
  • Bayern are unbeaten in 35 Champions League group games, winning their last 14 in a row - both competition records.
  • Bayern have scored at least once in their last 41 home Champions League group fixtures, since a 2-0 loss to Bordeaux in November 2009), winning 38 of them (D1, L1).
  • Bayern have never lost at home to United (W4, D2).
  • Erik ten Hag coached the Bayern reserves between 2013 and 2015, leading them into the fourth tier of German football.

Goal machines

Bayern have scored at least one goal in their last 40 Champions League group stage games at the Allianz Arena. The last time the Bavarian giants drew a blank at this stage of the tournament on home soil was back in 2009 against Bordeaux.

Tuchel suspended

Lest we forget, Bayern's coach is serving a European suspension tonight so won't be on the bench for the Group A encounter. "I can't have any contact with the team in the stadium," the 50-year-old explained, "It's not nice but it's pointless discussing it. We're a strong coaching team and my assistants will deal with it."

Watch: Kane discusses Champions League dreams

camera-photo

Kane's first Bayern UCL match

Harry Kane will face English opposition for the first time since his move to Bayern, while this will also be his maiden Champions League fixture for the club. The 30-year-old has settled in well at the Allianz Arena, scoring four in as many Bundesliga encounters, and will be eager to get up and running in European competition too.

All-time head-to-head

These two teams have met 11 times in all competitions in the past, and Bayern hold an advantage, having won four of those encounters to the Red Devils' two. The Bavarians have only lost one of the last seven, succumbing 3-2 in the 2009/10 Champions League quarter-final second leg.

FCB's Home fortress

Thomas Tuchel's side have not lost in their last five home games against United, Wednesday's hosts winning three and drawing two of the teams' last meetings in Munich.

Bayern held

The Bundesliga giants were in action last Friday and were held to a dramatic 2-2 draw against Bayer Leverkusen in Munich.

Last meeting

Bayern knocked United out at the quarter-final stage in 2013-14 thanks to a 4-2 aggregate win for the Bavarians. Bastian Schweinsteiger, Mario Mandzukic, Thomas Müller and Arjen Robben were on target for the Bavarian giants - then coached by Pep Guardiola - over the two legs.
