Bayern Munich beat Sevilla to win UEFA Super Cup
Javi Martinez scored the winner in extra time to give Bayern Munich their fourth major title of 2020 in a 2-1 victory over Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup in Budapest on Thursday.
Bayern Munich 2-1 Sevilla
Goals: 0-1 Ocampos (pen. 13'), 1-1 Goretzka (34'), 2-1 Martinez (104')
Not content with winning the treble last season, Bayern began as fiercely as ever against the UEFA Europa League winners, pressing aggressively in a bid to lay down an early marker. However, despite that early dominance in terms of possession and territory, it was Sevilla who edged ahead when Lucas Ocampos scored from the penalty spot after David Alaba had bundled over Ivan Raktic. Undeterred, Bayern stuck to their game plan and levelled the score just after the half-hour mark when Leon Goretzka coolly stroked in the equaliser from Robert Lewandowski's cushioned assist. Luuk de Jong had the ball in the net at the other end almost immediately, but it was rightly ruled out for offside as the team went into the break on level terms.
Hansi Flick's side began the second period determined to change that, and both Lewandowski and Leroy Sane had efforts disallowed as they started to turn the screw. Yet although Bayern remained dominant and created more chances, with Thomas Müller shooting straight at goalkeeper Yassine Bono and Niklas Süle seeing a header cleared off the line, Sevilla remained dangerous on the counter-attack. Indeed, they probably should have won the match in the 87th minute when Youssef El-Nesyri was sent clean through, but Manuel Neuer produced a superb save - one of a handful throughout the game - to keep Bayern in it. The Bundesliga champions looked more likely to win as extra time progressed, and they got their reward late on thanks to Martinez's powerful header following a corner, sealing a fourth title in the space of the last three months.

As it happened!
FULL TIME!
Bayern win the Super Cup!
118' BAYERN PLAYING KEEP-BALL
With the clock ticking down, Bayern are making Sevilla chase the ball and tires themselves out. Not long to go now.
115' JUST OVER FROM LEWANDOWSKI
The Polish striker receives a short pass from Müller, dropping a shoulder brilliantly on the edge of the box to create a pocket of space for himself. He lashes at shot at goal but it whistles just over the bar.
112' BOATENG ON
Jerome Boateng comes on at centre-back, replacing Alaba.
109' MIDFIELD BATTLE
There are some tired legs out there, but neither side are giving an inch. The flow of the game has been disrupted somewhat by some little niggly tackles in midfield.
106' ESCUDERO FIRES WIDE
The left-back darts into the box to connect with a deep cross from the right. He hits it on the volley but it's a difficult ball to take, and it flies off target.
SECOND HALF!
Sevilla kick things off once again.
HALF TIME!
Bayern have the lead but will be wary of getting caught out on the break again. The onus is on Sevilla to come out and attack now.
105'+1 SÜLE EFFORT CLEARED OFF THE LINE
Another Kimmich corner, this time from the left. Sevilla don't deal with it and Süle hits a first-time effort on his left foot at the back post. It's going in, but Carlos clears off the line.
104' MARTINEZ PUTS BAYERN AHEAD!
Kimmich swings in a corner from the right that is half-cleared to Alaba on the edge of the box. His shot is saved by Bono, who can only palm it back into the box, where Martinez is lurking. The Spaniard, who has only just come on to the pitch, places a brilliant header into the top corner.
102' TOLISSO HAS A GO
The French midfielder tries to catch Bono off guard with a shot from a tight angle on the left, but the Sevilla goalkeeper reacts well to make the save.
100' JUST WIDE FROM KIMMICH
A lovely, curling cross from the right by Müller finds Kimmich arriving at the near post. He tries to flick it towards goal but his touch is just a tad too heavy, and the ball goes wide.
99' DOUBLE CHANGE FOR BAYERN
Davies and Martinez come on for Bayern, with Hernandez and Goretzka the players to make way.
94' ALABA BLAZES OVER
Bayern have another free-kick in a promising position. Alaba takes it but it's always rising and goes well over.
Shortly afterwards, Vazquez comes on for Jordan for Sevilla.
92' EL-NESYRI HITS THE POST!
Bayern may have more possession but Sevilla are catching them out on the counter. It's El-Nesyri again who scampers down the left, before cutting inside Alaba to have a free shot at goal, 10 yards out. Neuer sticks out a leg and deflects it onto the post, before punching the rebound clear.
91' WE'RE OFF AGAIN!
Bayern get extra time up and running, but it's Sevilla who have a brilliant chance to score as Jordan gets behind Süle and tries to cross into the middle for El-Nesyri, but Süle manages to recover and clear for a corner.
FULL TIME!
Try as they might, Bayern can't find a second goal (in addition to the couple that they had disallowed) and we're going into extra time.
90+1' INTO ADDED TIME
We're into the first of four minutes of injury time. Hernandez is given a yellow card for a late tackle on Ocampos.
90' EL-NESYRI AGAIN!
The Sevilla substitute tries to make amends for that miss as the Spaniards launch another counter-attack. He spies Neuer off his line and goes for a speculative effort from inside his own half, but the Bayern goalkeeper tracks back and makes a comfortable catch.
87' WHAT A SAVE FROM NEUER!!!
A quick counter from Sevilla and they have a chance to win at the death. Navas charges forward and times his pass brilliantly into the path of El-Nesyri, who is left one-on-one with Neuer. He surely must win it, but Neuer makes an incredible save at the near post to keep the score tied at 1-1!
83' ALL BAYERN
The Reds are hogging the ball in the closing stages and are camped out in Sevilla's half. They're probing and probing, but the white shirts are staying compact and not giving them much space to work in.
80' WARNING FROM SEVILLA
A nice counter down the left from Sevilla as Escudero gets forward well and crosses to the back post. Ocampos gets incredible height on his leap, but fouls Hernandez in the process and Bayern have a free-kick inside their own box.
78' MÜLLER HAS A GO
The 30-year-old is next to have a pop at goal as Bayern look to turn the screw, but Bono saves well at his near post.
76' BAYERN PUSHING
Gnabry darts into space down the right and he volleys a ball back across goal. Lewandowski tries to get there, but he's just beaten to it by Kounde, who gives away a corner.
75' SÜLE HEADER!
The Bayern centre-back rises highest to meet a cross to the back post, but his header is cleared off the line by Carlos.
72' NEXT CHANGE FOR SEVILLA
Gudelj comes on for Suso in the Sevilla midfield.
71' TOLISSO ON FOR SANE
That run was Sane's last involvement in the game before being taken off for Tolisso.
69' ANOTHER FREE-KICK FOR BAYERN
A brilliant run from Sane on the counter-attack, and he's only stopped by Fernando as he approaches the Sevilla area. The Brazilian is shown a yellow card for hi trouble.
65' ALABA JUST OVER
Müller is fouled right outside the Sevilla penalty area, ever so slightly right of centre. Lewandowsi and Alaba stand over the ball but it's the latter who takes it, curling an effort just over the bar.
63' SANE GOAL DISALLOWED
Sane lashes the ball in from close range after Goretzka's shot is saved, but the referee rules it out for a foul by Lewandowski in the build-up.
61' FREE-KICK FOR BAYERN
Navas clatters into Hernandez down the Bayern left, giving away a free-kick in a dangerous situation right on the edge of the area. It's laid off to Gnabry, who dips a shoulder and skips past two defenders before getting a shot away, but it's deflected over for a corner.
58' DOUBLE CHANCE FOR BAYERN!
Gnabry cuts inside from the left and smacks a brilliant shot at goal. Bono does well to save it but the rebound falls at the feet of Sane, six yards out. He tries to place it beyond the goalkeeper as defenders rush in to cover, but Carlos manages to block once more.
56' DOUBLE CHANGE FROM SEVILLA
The Spaniards make two substitutions as De Jong and Rakitic go off, to be replaced by El-Nesyri and Torres respectively.
54' SANE CURLS WIDE
The ball breaks kindly for Sane on the edge of the Sevilla area, to the right of centre. He cuts onto his left foot and tries to curl a shot towards the far post, but skews it off target.
51' LEWANDOWSKI EFFORT DISALLOWED
This is sensational from Bayern as Pavard scampers down the right before playing the ball back to Sane. He dinks a lovely ball to the back post to Lewandowski, who nods it down to Müller inside the six-yard box. He controls it and selflessly plays it back to Lewy, who taps over the line. The goal is chalked off though, as Lewandowski was just offside from Sane's pass.
49' EVEN STEVENS
Sevilla have a decent spell of pressure following the corner but Bayern manage to weather the storm. The match has largely continued in the same vein as the first, both teams going at it at pace.
46' GOOD SAVE FROM NEUER
Escudero scampers down the left and whips a ball into the middle, looking for De Jong. He's sandwiched by Alaba and Süle, who just gets a toe on the ball, but forces Neuer to make a strong save at his near post.
SECOND HALF!
Sevilla get the ball rolling again! No changes from either side at the break.
HALF-TIME!
Referee Anthony Taylor blows his whistle on the first half following two minutes of injury time. It's all square at the break, which is just about fair on the balance of play. Bayern have had more possession (62 per cent), but Sevilla have held their own and looked dangerous getting forward.
45' SÜLE AT THE SECOND ATTEMPT
Navas delivers a teasing ball into the box that Süle misjudges at the near post, swinging and missing. The ball is bundled back towards him though, and he hooks it clear at the second bite of the cherry.
42' SÜLE IMPERIOUS
De Jong tries to get to a speculative chip over the Bayern defence, but he doesn't have the pace or the muscle to get there ahead of Süle, who sees the ball out for a goal kick.
38' SANE BLOCKED AGAIN
Müller pings a stunning cross-field pass from left to right, straight to the feet of Sane. He sprints forward and shapes to shoot, but Carlos gets in the way.
35' DE JONG EFFORT DISALLOWED
Sevilla think they've retaken the lead for a moment as De Jong races clear of the Bayern defence and places a shot beyond Neuer. It's a nice finish, but its rightly flagged for offside.
34' GORETZKA EQUALISES!
This is a lovely, lovely goal. Mülle peels off his marker on the edge of the box and chips a cross towards the back post, where Lewandowski has spinned behind the defender. The striker cushions it back into the path of Goretzka, who keeps his composure to stroke the ball into the net from 12 yards out.
30' LEWANDOWSKI THROUGH ON GOAL
A long ball forward goes straight through to Lewandowski, who bears down on goal with a defender on his shoulder. He tries to dink it over the goalkeeper, and 99 times out of 100 you'd bet on him scoring, but this time it goes straight into the hands of Bono.
29' SANE BLOCKED
Another nice move from Bayern as Alaba drills a ball forward from the back. It's worked to Sane, who has a pocket of space to shoot. He gets an effort away but it's blocked almost instantly.
26' PAVARD FIRES WIDE
Nice link-up play between Hernandez and Müller on the left, and the latter drives forward before slotting a pass into the path of the onrushing Pavard, unmarked on the right. The Frenchman takes a first-time shot that fizzes across the face of goal but flies just wide of the top corner.
22' MÜLLER MUST EQUALISE!
Lewandowski drifts to the right and plays a low ball across the six-yard box. Müller darts in front of his marker and flicks a shot at goal, but the defender gets just enough on it at full stretch to deflect it for a corner.
21' GNABRY'S DRIVE BLOCKED
The corner is half-cleared to just outside the penalty area, sitting up nicely for Gnabry. He smashes a shot with his left foot, but it's blocked before it can get anywhere near Bono's goal.
19' FREE-KICK TO BAYERN
Rakitic is just a yard too slow going into a tackle and brings down Lewandowski, around 30 yards out and slightly left of centre. Kimmich drifts his delivery to the back post, where Süle is arriving, but his header is deflected wide for a corner.
15' BONO SLIPS
The Sevilla goalkeeper almost allows Bayern back into it as he slips trying to play a pass on the edge of his penalty area, but fortunately for him a defender is able to clear the danger before Sane gets in.
13' SEVILLA TAKE THE LEAD!
Neuer dives to his left, but Lucas Ocampos slots the ball the other way to put the Spaniards ahead.
11' PENALTY TO SEVILLA!
Navas floats a cross into the middle from the right, De Jong cushions a header into the path of Rakitic, who is bundled over by Alaba. The Bayern defender receives a booking and Sevilla have a spot-kick.
8' TACTICAL BATTLE
Both teams are employing a high-pressing game, committing numbers forward to hound the opposition when not in possession. Both sides are also trying to play their way around it, rather than punting long balls forward, so much of the action is concentrated in the midfield third at the moment.
5' TOE TO TOE
Bayern enjoyed more of the ball in the first few minutes and got forward well a couple of times, but Sevilla held their ground and have been confidently stroking the ball around in midfield now.
2' EARLY PROMISE FROM BAYERN
Hernandez does very well to win the ball in midfield, aggressively knocking his marker off the ball. He gives it to Sane and suddenly the Reds pour forward. The move peters out in the end, but it's an encouraging sign early on from Flick's men.
1' KICK-OFF!
Here we go! Bayern get the ball rolling in Budapest!
LOPETEGUI: PLAYING AGAINST BAYERN A "MOTIVATION"
"We're going into the game with optimism," said the Sevilla tactician in the build-up to this fixture. "We're pleased to have another challenge. It can only motivate you to play against this Bayern team. It's the only way we can progress."
FLICK: "99 PER CENT WON'T BE ENOUGH"
Bayern coach Flick is wary of today's opposition, despite his side being unbeaten since December last year. "We've got one aim - to win the UEFA Super Cup," he said at his pre-match press conference.
"It'll be tough but we know we're capable of winning it. Sevilla have a great team and a very good coach, who has taken them to another level and has them superbly well drilled in terms of tactics. We want to be well prepared and give 100 per cent out on the pitch; 99 per cent won't be enough against Sevilla."
HEAD TO HEAD
These teams have only faced each other twice previously, over two legs in the Champions League quarter-finals in 2017/18. Bayern won 2-1 at the Allianz Arena in the first leg thanks to an own goal from Navas and a header from Thiago, eventually progressing to the next round following a goalless draw in Spain.
SEVILLA TEAM NEWS
Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui has essentially selected the side that beat Inter Milan in the Europa League final a month ago. Rakitic and Escudero - both formerly at Schalke - start here in place of Banega and Reguillon, who both departed over the summer. Former Gladbach forward Luuk de Jong starts up top.
BAYERN TEAM NEWS
Head coach Hansi Flick has made one change from the side that thrashed Schalke 8-0 at the weekend. David Alaba is fit again following a thigh complaint, so he replaces Jerome Boateng alongside Niklas Süle at centre-back.
Lucas Hernandez keeps his place at left-back, with Alphonso Davies on the bench. Kingsley Coman is isolating in quarantine at home after being in contact with a person who later tested positive for coronavirus, while Tanguy Nianzou remains injured.
