Marco Reus books Borussia Dortmund's place in DFB Cup quarter-finals in narrow Bochum win

xwhatsappmailcopy-link

Marco Reus stepped off the bench to fire Borussia Dortmund past local rivals Bochum and into the DFB Cup quarter-finals.

Bochum 1-2 Borussia Dortmund
Goals: 0-1 Can (45’+1), 1-1 Stöger (pen. 64’), 1-2 Reus 70’ (assist: Bellingham)

Dortmund swarmed all over Bochum in the early stages as Marius Wolf flicked a header wide and Sebastien Haller cleared the crossbar. Jamie Bynoe-Gittens was denied at close quarters by Manuel Riemann, who had to be alert to further, albeit speculative, efforts from Jude Bellingham and Julian Brandt midway through the first half. Haller then smashed over after being played in by Bellingham, with Bynoe-Gittens faring no better moments later. The goal BVB so richly deserved arrived in first-half added time, though, when Emre Can caught Riemann out of position with a shot from downtown.

The penny dropped for Bochum at the start of the second period as Christopher Antwi-Adjei ran through on goal, only to be thwarted by Gregor Kobel. Philipp Förster blazed over from close range, before Kobel prevailed in another one-on-one with Antwi-Adjei. Kevin Stöger levelled from the penalty spot after Bynoe-Gittens was adjudged to have handled following a lengthy VAR review, but Dortmund were behind for barely five minutes. Salih Özcan hit a raking pass up to Bellingham, who selflessly laid the ball off for Reus to tap home and send the five-time winners through to the last eight.

Match stats

  • Dortmund have reached the final, winning the DFB Cup twice, on the last five occasions they've advanced beyond the last 16.
  • Only Bayern Munich (20) and Werder Bremen (six) have won the DFB Cup more often than Dortmund (five). Their most recent title came in 2021 under Edin Terzic.
  • Reus ended a run of seven competitive games without a goal.
  • Bellingham has two goals and two assists in the cup this year, to go with eight and four across the Bundesliga and UEFA Champions League.
  • Can scored his first competitive goal of the season, and third in 43 DFB Cup appearances.
  • Stöger scored his first DFB Cup goal since the 2019/20 round of 16.

DORTMUND THROUGH!

There goes the final whistle. Borussia Dortmund are through to the DFB Cup quarter-finals thanks to goals from Emre Can and Marco Reus. A Kevin Stöger penalty had Bochum on terms at one point but the hosts ultimately bow out. How costly that first-half error from Manuel Riemann that led to Can's opener. Not that the Black-and-Yellows will be fretting over that. Edin Terzic's side are into the hat for the 19 February quarter-final draw.

LAST CHANCE BOCHUM

Bochum goalkeeper Riemann curls a pass into the Dortmund area but the ball bounces harmlessly wide. That might well be that.

CHANCES BOTH ENDS

Broschinski does Schlotterbeck on the right but can only waft a harmless shot into the arms of Kobel. At the other end, Bellingham spurns a chance to put this one to bed, the BVB midfielder rolling his shot into the hands of Riemann.

MODESTE MENACE

Modeste spots Riemann off his line and has a cheeky go at goal. The BVB forward doesn't quite get the desired weight onto his effort and Bochum survive.

BVB ALMOST THERE

Substitute Marco Reus looks to have won this Pokal tie for Dortmund but there will be six minutes of added time to play in this Round of 16 tie. Suddenly, the Bochum fans are making a lot of noise again.
83'

BVB PENALTY SHOUT

Julian Ryerson cuts back inside the Bochum area and the ball appears to clip Janko's fingertips. Nothing doing, says the ref.
80'

HOME SPIRITS LOW

There has been a noticeable lull in the atmosphere since BVB retook the lead. Both Bochum and their fans put in a huge effort in successfully pulling level. Dortmund retaking the lead seems to have taken the air out of the hosts' balloon.
73'

SAVED BY THE FLAG

Hummels gets into a bit of a mess with Antwi-Adjei sniffing. The Bochum attacker takes the loose back pass and looks to square the ball, but the assistant on the far side has his flag up for offside.
70'

BVB BACK IN FRONT

Just as Bochum's tails are up, Dortmund strike to devastating effect. Schlotterbeck's pass from deep finds Bellingham, who is suddenly striding towards goal. The midfielder could take this himself, but he sees Marco Reus to his right and prods the ball into his teammate's path. Reus taps into the empty net. Simple as that.

FÖRSTER FROM DISTANCE

As the home supporters sing the "allez, allez, allez" song, Philipp Förster picks up possession, steps forward and unleashes a long-range shot that fizzes over the crossbar.
64'

BOCHUM LEVEL

Stöger hits the penalty with everything he has and the ball almost bursts the net. The hosts are level and the home fans break into song.

PENALTY BOCHUM

It took a long time to confirm, but Bochum have a spot kick.
59'

PENALTY BOCHUM?

Losilla lifts a pass into the area. Bynoe-Gittens jumps, turns, and the ball connects with his elbow. The question is, was that inside the area or just outside? It's close. The referee is going to check.
57'

ONE MORE CHANCE

Dear oh dear, Bochum. The hosts really should be level here. Antwi-Adjei is on to one more through pass and only has Kobel to beat. The attacker tries to round the keeper, who is onto the ball like a light to deny the hosts once again.
55'

BOCHUM AGAIN

Another big Bochum chance. Antwi-Adjei gets down the left and cuts back for Förster who slaps a first time shot miles over the bar. The home fans groan out once more.
53'

KOBEL DENIES ANTWI-ADJEI

What. A. Chance. Antwi-Adjei races onto the defence-splitting pass and he's one-v-one against Kobel. The Swiss shot stopper stands tall and blocks the shot with his legs. Huge opportunity for Bochum.
52'

BVB LIVELY

Bynoe-Gittens arrives enthusiastically onto a loose ball and lifts a volley straight into the arms of Riemann.
51'

ASANO WITH A LOOK

Asano has a pop from distance from a central position. Kobel drops to his knees and gathers that one.
49'

BVB CHANGE

Edin Terzic mixes things up with the introduction of Nico Schlotterbeck.
48'

BOCHUM WARNING

Christopher Antwi-Adjei gets away with a warning following a foul on Wolf ... who looks like his evening is coming to an end.
47'

KOBEL UNTROUBLED

Förster nods an effort goalwards but Kobel gathers with ease.

EAGER HOSTS

Bochum were out for this second half at least three minutes before their opponents. Telling? Let's see ...

HALF TIME

Riemann runs towards the tunnel, no doubt furious with himself for that error that has essentially handed Dortmund the lead in this Cup tie. BVB deserve their advantage on clear chances created, but that won't appease the Bochum fans much.
45'

PREVIOUS CHANCE

Right before Dortmund took the lead, Bynoe-Gittens had a huge chance right in front of the sticks to put his side in front. The teenager hoiked over the bar but that's all been forgotten now after Can's effort from downtown.
45'

BVB LEAD!

Well, well, well. Dortmund lead and Riemann has his head in his hands. The Bochum keeper came flying out of his area in an attempt to clear the danger but the ball found its way to Emre Can who swept in from long range. The BVB midfielder is swamped by his teammates.

BVB CHANCE

Superb from Jude Bellingham. Dortmund get their act together in the final third with Brandt digging out a pass that reaches the England international. Bellingham swishes a pass through the Bochum defence to find Haller who smashes over.
41'

BOCHUM APPEALS

Home shouts for a penalty after Wolf appears to get his arm in the way of Özcan's clearing header. Wolf had his back to the ball, however, so there's no chance the referee would even consider that.
39'

JANKO BOOKING

Ryerson is in the air when Janko comes flying through and collides with the Dortmund player. Yellow card for the Bochum man.

HARD TO PREDICT

Both sets of players are bathed in sweat, such is the intensity of this Round of 16 encounter. Impossible to predict who will go through to the quarter-finals at this early-ish stage.
31'

NO WAY THROUGH

Hofmann and Asano try to work a chance inside the opposition box but the visitors are alive to that and the Bochum move breaks down.
29'

BYNOE-GITTENS HIGH AND WIDE

Bynoe-Gittens has a go from distance but his shot fails to trouble Riemann.
27'

STAT TIME

With a slight lull in play, it's worth throwing in an interesting stat on tonight's coaches. Since Thomas Letsch has been in charge of Bochum, this evening's hosts have won all five of their previous home games. Edin Terzic, meanwhile, has won all of his seven seven DFB Cup games in charge of Dortmund.
camera-photo

TIGHT AFFAIR

This has been a solid, physical Pokal encounter thus far. BVB Have had the big moments but Bochum are knocking at the Dortmund door.
23'

BRANDT LETS FLY

Danilo Soares and Wolf fly towards each other with their studs showing. The latter goes down and Dortmund win a free kick in a tasty, central position. Brandt eyes one and lifts the ball over the wall. Riemann tips the shot over the top.
19'

DEAD-BALL ACTION

Hofmann makes a nuisance of himself inside the Dortmund area. Can concedes a needless corner. Bochum again fail to take advantage of the set piece.
17'

BELLINGHAM SIGHTER

Brandt taps to his right where that man Jude Bellingham is waiting. The midfielder wallops one at the target but his shot is always rising, meaning Riemann needn't worry.
15'

STÖGER WASTE

Bochum win a corner but Stöger's set piece is poor and Dortmund bring the ball away. The home fans were chanting for their team to give them a goal prior to the corner. It won't come with crosses like that.
13'

BYNOE-GITTENS SHOOTS

BVB break and the ball eventually falls to Bynoe-Gittens at the back stick. The England attacker snaps a shot at the near post which Riemann deflects wide.
11'

RUHRDERBY ATMOSPHERE

Some crunching tackles from both sides landing now and the crowd are up for this. Edin Terzic grabs the ball and does one of those calming gestures. Good luck with that.
8'

BOCHUM CREATE

Better from Bochum. Förster looks to ease the home pressure with an incisive run through the middle. Hofmann then finds room to shoot, but his effort is blocked.
6'

HALLER EFFORT

Haller gets into space on the right and wellies a shot at target. The ball zips narrowly over the top. Bochum can't find breath.
4'

HOSTS TROUBLED

Bochum are looking to settle here but BVB are swarming, pressing their opponents back with some high-intensity play.
2'

BVB GO CLOSE

Almost the perfect start for Dortmund. Brandt's corner finds Wolf who flicks a header from close range straight into Riemann's hands. That was a big chance.

Away we go in the first half. Bochum all in blue, BVB kitted out in yellow with black trimmings.

LAST TIME IN BOCHUM

It was honours even when the two sides last met at the Ruhrstadion in December 2021, BVB coming from a goal down to earn a 1-1 draw.

"PASSION AND AMBITION"

Here's how Bochum captain Anthony Losilla feels his side can get under Dortmund's skin tonight: "We know that we annoy our opponents with passion and ambition and that we can always be dangerous. This season, we're following the same principle as last season but we're going into even more detail every day in training."

TEAM NEWS

It's as you were for Bochum, who start with the same eleven that began last weekend's 5-2 home win against Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga. BVB are without the suspended Karim Adeyemi, meaning a start for Jamie Bynoe-Gittens. Marco Reus and Raphael Guerreiro drop to the bench, with Salih Özcan and Julian Ryerson coming in. Nico Schlotterbeck also makes way for Mats Hummels in central defence.

Road to the Last 16

Bochum's run to the Round of 16 has taken in victories against Viktoria Berlin (3-0) and SV Elversberg (1-0) while BVB have seen off 1860 Munich (3-0) and Hannover (2-0). Both sides are yet to conceded a goal in this season's tournament.

CHANCE TO ADVANCE

Edin Terzic - who was in charge when Dortmund last lifted the DFB Cup in 2021 - has given his thoughts ahead of this evening's mouthwatering Cup tie: "It's not easy for an away team [at the Ruhrstadion], but if we want to win the Cup, we need to overcome tough tasks like this one. We're sure that with the confidence from our recent games, we'll have a great chance to go through to the next round."

LAST TIME OUT

The last time these two sides met, Youssoufa Moukoko was on target twice in a 3-0 home win for Dortmund in the Bundesliga in November.

"PLAYERS ARE FIRED UP"

Here's Bochum boss Letsch on tonight's Pokal Ruhrderby: "It's a derby, the floodlights are on, the players are fired up; it can't get any better than this. The signs are clear, BVB is playing for the Champions League, we are doing everything to stay in the league. We want to show that we also play a role in the region."

FORM GUIDE

Tonight's quarter-final contenders are at opposite ends of the Bundesliga standings, with hosts Bochum down in 15th position and BVB in third, just three points off leaders Bayern Munich. Bochum's 5-2 win against Hoffenheim last weekend, however, means Thomas Letsch's men are in high spirits as they welcome a Black-and-Yellow side who also netted five times in their last game.
