Bochum 1-2 Borussia Dortmund
Goals: 0-1 Can (45’+1), 1-1 Stöger (pen. 64’), 1-2 Reus 70’ (assist: Bellingham)

Dortmund swarmed all over Bochum in the early stages as Marius Wolf flicked a header wide and Sebastien Haller cleared the crossbar. Jamie Bynoe-Gittens was denied at close quarters by Manuel Riemann, who had to be alert to further, albeit speculative, efforts from Jude Bellingham and Julian Brandt midway through the first half. Haller then smashed over after being played in by Bellingham, with Bynoe-Gittens faring no better moments later. The goal BVB so richly deserved arrived in first-half added time, though, when Emre Can caught Riemann out of position with a shot from downtown.

The penny dropped for Bochum at the start of the second period as Christopher Antwi-Adjei ran through on goal, only to be thwarted by Gregor Kobel. Philipp Förster blazed over from close range, before Kobel prevailed in another one-on-one with Antwi-Adjei. Kevin Stöger levelled from the penalty spot after Bynoe-Gittens was adjudged to have handled following a lengthy VAR review, but Dortmund were behind for barely five minutes. Salih Özcan hit a raking pass up to Bellingham, who selflessly laid the ball off for Reus to tap home and send the five-time winners through to the last eight.

Match stats

  • Dortmund have reached the final, winning the DFB Cup twice, on the last five occasions they've advanced beyond the last 16.

  • Bellingham has two goals and two assists in the cup this year, to go with eight and four across the Bundesliga and UEFA Champions League.
  • Can scored his first competitive goal of the season, and third in 43 DFB Cup appearances.
  • Stöger scored his first DFB Cup goal since the 2019/20 round of 16.
