xwhatsappmailcopy-link

Borussia Dortmund have left Asia after their pre-season tour of Thailand and Japan. Following defeat to BG Pathum United FC in Bangkok, Nuri Şahin's side beat Cerezo Osaka 3-2 in their final friendly; Karim Adeyemi scoring twice and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens also on target for the Black-and-Yellows.

Dortmund landed in Osaka for the second leg of a tour of Asia and as the UEFA Champions League finalists visited Japan, they earned their first win of pre-season.

BVB faced off against club legend Shinji Kagawa, who won the Bundesliga title with Şahin and assistant coach Łukasz Piszczek in 2011, and Osaka scored twice after his substitution.

A first friendly in Bangkok on 21 July saw current Thai league cup winners BG Pathum United secure a 4-0 win - with a legends meeting taking place at the BG stadium in the build-up. They returned from Japan on 25 July following a successful tour.

Dortmund CEO Carsten Cramer said: "We are happy to continue the tradition of our trips abroad in the summer of 2024. We know that we have many fans in Asia, so we are very happy to be visiting there again this time. With Bangkok and Osaka we have also found two special venues that we have not visited before."

The tour as it happened:

Couto arrives

Brazilian Yan Couto has signed from Manchester City and will provided much needed depth at full-back for Dortmund. Couto, 22, spent last season on loan at Girona, who qualified for the Champions League for the first time in their history.

Living the dream

Pascal Groß's signing completes a career ambition for the midfielder, who was such a big fan of the club growing up that he took it upon himself to re-decorate his bedroom, telling the official club website: "One day my parents asked themselves why it was so quiet in my room for once. I had just grabbed some paint and simply painted the black and yellow pennant onto the wallpaper."

Groß signs

Dortmund will welcome Germany international Pascal Groß into their pre-season preparations following his signing from Brighton.

Villarreal up next

With Dortmund's tour of Japan now over, they look ahead to their next pre-season game which will take place in Altach, against LaLiga side Villarreal.

Borussia Dortmund ended their tour of Asia with a 3-2 win over a Cerezo Osaka side that included BVB legend Shinji Kagawa.

Tour comes to an end

Dortmund's victory over Cerezo Osaka was the last action of their Asia tour, which took in Thailand and Japan. There was a whole lot of love shown to BVB across their trip, with the emotional reunion with Shinji Kagawa and fervent support from local crowds two major highlights. The club now return form Japan today and will spend some time in Dortmund before heading to Bad Ragaz, Switzerland from 1 to 9 August, where they face Villarreal on the 6th.

Full-time: Cerezo Osaka 2-3 Borussia Dortmund

Dortmund are certainly still in pre-season mode, but it was a big improvement on last time out, particularly with their forwards getting to work and scoring a collection of delightful goals. BVB have certainly picked games to help them gradually improve, and with Villarreal and Aston Villa up next, the tests will continue.

89' Ouch

Luhrs' evening is ended prematurely with a bloodied nose, Hettwer replaces him.

87' Osaka want a penalty!

And they have a decent case. Goalscorer Uejo is found in the box is free to shoot, but Meiser takes him down from behind.
camera-photo

83' Şahin freshens things up

Şahin makes brings some youth and energy on for the closing stages, with Kabar, Meiser, Jessen, Kamara and Roggow all entering the fray.

81: What an effort!

Uejo hits a free kick from range and boy does it hit it. It sneaks just wide of the near post with Meyer completely beaten. That would have been 3-3.

75' Brunner denied

It's another good save, this time from Osaka's Yang on Brunner.

73' GOAL: It's 3-2!

Meyer can't do anything about that one! It's Sakata's time for a curler, but instead tricks the goalkeeper by going for the near post instead, and he finds it brilliantly from range.

72' Meyer again!

It's goal-scorer Shibayama's turn for a curler, and Meyer again tips a goal-bound effort just around the post.

71' Great save from Meyer!

It's another cut in and shoot effort, this time from Osaka, and it looks destined for the bottom corner before Meyer tips it behind. He also saves from the follow-up corner.

70' Nice from Duranville

Duranville makes a nice run in from the left hand side, beats his man with piece of skill and flashes a shot wide.

66' GOAL: Osaka get one back!

A nice passing move sees Kitano found in space down the left and he makes his way into the Dortmund box, seeing his shot saved and his second parried into danger. Shibayama is there to latch on and fire in first time.

65' Excellent from Ryerson

Despite Adeyemi's two goals, Ryerson will likely be Sahin's Man of the Match. The Norwegian right-back has been working and pressing tirelessly throughout, showing his Bundesliga consistency and reliability even in pre-season.

63' Two changes for Dortmund

BVB also shake things up, with young talents Brunner and Duranville making their way on.

62' Here comes Shinji!

Kagawa makes his way on after a hug from Sahin and cheers go up around the stadium. The BVB legend has a big grin on his face.

59' BVB with room to breathe

With a 3-0 lead, Dortmund are in practice mode as they try to play through the middle more effectively, and have some luck, going from one box to the other with a nice passing move.

56' Rothe stakes his claim

Tim Rothe continues to impress at left-back after a fine season on loan at Holstein Kiel, there's a chance the Germany youth international could make the place his own.

48' Almost an Adeyemi hat-trick!

Ryerson sets up Adeyemi with a nice run down the right but the Germany international is denied by the goalkeeper with two close-range efforts.

46' Back underway with changes

The second half kicks off with Moukoko in place of Haller. Osaka make six changes but there's still no sign of Kagawa, with Osaka making eight changes.
camera-photo

Half-time: Cerezo Osaka 0-3 Borussia Dortmund

BVB are still in pre-season mode, but on a drier pitch and in less humidity their class has finally shone through. The changes of Haller and Bynoe-Gittens have certainly made a difference, while two-goal Adeyemi looks more than ready for the new season.

41' Close from Brandt

A period of not much happening is punctured by a nice exchange as Ryerson lays the ball off to Brandt and today's captain fires a lovely shot just wide.

33' Osaka's best chance

Capixaba is found in the box and Meyer flies out to meet him, he makes the save and although the ball dribbles through, Lurhrs is there to clear the danger.

32' Almost four!

Adeyemi flashes a shot just wide of the post and a flying Haller just misses tapping it in at the back stick.

31' GOAL: Dortmund are back!

Osaka get a taste of Adeyemi's pace in devastating style as he flies past Shindo to collect a ball forward and slot home. Wow that was fast.

29' GOAL: What a hit from Bynoe-Gittens!

Bynoe-Gittens knocks the ball past Shindo and looks second best to recover it, but he blasts past the defender, takes the ball wide, cuts back in and curls an unstoppable effort into the bottom corner. Wow!

26' GOAL: Dortmund have the lead!

Brandt picks out Haller in the box and his flick-on falls to Adeyemi who blasts into the top of the net from close range.

20' Best chance yet falls to BVB

Haller his a cross into the box first time from a decent angle but it's straight at the goalkeeper.

17' Meyer forced into action again

After his earlier save, Meyer does well to fly out and stop a dangerous cross.

13' Things quieten down

Both teams are settling into the match now, with Nmecha heading over from a corner.

9' First shots

Nmecha fires a long range effort well over the bar before Hiroaki Okuno goes closer and earns a corner.

6' Another tough test

This will be another examination of Sahin's hopes of playing more through the middle of the pitch, with Osaka starting the game with a very intense press.

4' Osaka win a corner

And then another. Both are easily dealt with, though.

1' We're underway

Dortmund kick us off and instantly do something they struggled with last time out and play the ball from defence through midfield with ease.
camera-photo

More on those teams

The big news is that Dortmund legend Kagawa doesn't make Osaka's starting line-up, so we'll likely have to wait until the second half to see him. For BVB, Sahin makes two changes to the side that lost 4-0 to Pathum, bringing in Haller for Brunner, and Bynoe-Gittens for Moukoko.

Osaka starting XI

Kim Jin-Hyeon - Okuda, Toriumi, Hirano, Shindo - Yamada, Tameda, Okuno - Vitor Bueno, Leo Ceara, Capixaba.

Dortmund starting XI

Meyer - Ryerson, Süle, Lührs, Rothe - Nmecha, Azhil - Bynoe-Gittens, Brandt (c), Adeyemi - Haller.

Ricken on the reception in Asia

"As a Dortmund native, it makes me extremely proud when I fly halfway around the world and, when I arrive, there are over 500 people standing there to greet me in Black & Yellow jerseys. It never ceases to amaze me and I am delighted that we are able to fly the Black & Yellow flag all over the world."

CEO Lars Ricken on Pathum defeat

"I didn't expect it to turn out like that, as I'd watched the training sessions, which were very intense. Nuri really made the most of every minute, the team pulled together well. They were very intense sessions, long sessions, and it all looked very good. We flew straight to Osaka after the game and that's when you see the coaches talking and discussing with each other, analysing the game with the players in front of their laptops. They are very open and critical about it and after our third friendly match we know what we need to work on."

BVB to face Kagawa's Ozaka at 11:15 CET

Dortmund are getting ready for their third pre-season fixture today. They'll be looking for a first exhibition win of the campaign after a 1-1 draw against Aue and 4-0 defeat to BG Pathum United.

Kagawa's BVB memories

"It's a special club. We achieved very good things like a Bundesliga and Pokal, I'm very, very happy when I look back at Dortmund, it's just good memories. It was the best feeling of my career playing in the Signal Iduna Park, I'm very proud that I played there. I still follow every game."

Şahin on a "special" club

"Shinji is the best example for, if you do a good job even when you come from around the world, this club will remember you forever... This club is special. If you play football and you give everything, they will remember you for a lifetime."

A happy reunion in Osaka

There's been a wonderful moment today as Şahin was reunited with former teammate Shinji Kagawa in Japan. The Dortmund legend met the current crop of players and has spent some time with Şahin after BVB landed in Kagawa's homeland.

Dortmund land in Japan

With their time in Thailand behind them, Dortmund kicked off the second leg of their tour today after landing in Osaka. The players were recovering after arrival before a light training session planned for Tuesday morning.
camera-photo

Şahin on Brandt

"This is all new territory for the young players. Jule was one of the bright spots. We want to give him even more responsibility. And he wants that too - and shows it. He is not a loudmouth, but his manner also makes him a leader."
camera-photo

Şahin on Pathum defeat

"Of course it's a heavy defeat. But I know how to classify it, where to put it. I know that the boys are very tired, that we have trained a lot. But that can't be an excuse. We still can't lose 4-0."

Full-time: BG Pathum United 4-0 Borussia Dortmund

BVB's tour of Asia has got off to a far from ideal start in Thailand. The home side dealt with the heat and gameplan far more effectively with four simple goals. The match saw a number of youngsters attempt to stake their claim for the season, but Nuri Şahin has some thinking to do before facing Cerezo Osaka next.

88' GOAL: It's 4-0!

Pathum tear through BVB again with a simple ball through. Freddy Alvarez finds Jaroensak Wonggorn who confidently blasts in his second of the match.

86' Dortmund have the ball in the net...

... but it's offside. Brunner drifts past his man in the build up.

84' Pathum with a free kick

The home side can make it four in a dangerous position but the free kick is well over.

79' Hettwer the danger man

Hettwer is finding plenty of space down Pathum's left hand side, but so far is struggling to make things stick.

74' Another sublime save

Dortmund start turning the screw and Haller creates a great chance for himself, but substitute goalkeeper Pisan Dokmaikeaw picks up where his predecessor left off.

69' Almost four!

It's another great attack from Pathum who want a penalty for a last ditch tackle from Elias Benkara in the box.

65' GOAL: It's 3-0 for Pathum!

BVB are all over the place on the break and Jaroensak Wonggorn is played into space with all the time to slot past Meyer and make it three.
camera-photo

62' Frustration for Dortmund

BVB are struggling to create chances after the break.

57' More great Pathum defending

Kjell Watjen does brilliantly to fashion a chance from range but Kritsada Kaman reads the shot and sends it behind.

54' Corner for BVB...

...but it's a tame header from Haller.

50' What a save!

Substitute Julian Hettwer is found down the right hand side for Dortmund and gets his shot away but Anuin gets out a strong wrist to stun the youngster.

46' Subs for Dortmund

Haller, Meiser, Hettwer, Jessen and Kabar come on for Dortmund at the break.

46' Back underway

Pathum get us restarted as BVB look to get back in the contest.
camera-photo

Half-time: BG Pathum United 2-0 Borussia Dortmund

It's not a good start to pre-season for Dortmund who have struggled to get up to speed against a very lively team. They've still had plenty of chances though, and things could easily chance quickly in the next 45 minutes.

45'+1 Close for BVB!

Ryerson, Dortmund's best player this half, makes his way into the box and his cross goes dangerously across the goal-line before ending up at Brunners' feet, but he again loses control of the ball.

44' GOAL: It's 2-0 Pathum!

Pathum get a rare extended spell of possession in Dortmund's final third and the ball is worked to Lorenzen in space on the right. His cross onto Teerasil Dangda's head is perfect and Meyer has no chance as the shot sails past him.

41' Almost for Brandt

Süle finds BVB's new no.10 with a ball over the top and Brandt gets a shot away but goalkeeper Saranon Anuin reads it well to make the save.

38' Chances flowing for Pathum

Gakuto Notsuda fires over from range before Lorenzen nearly sets up another. This is a strong test for BVB.

34' Early signs of Şahin's style

BVB appear to be trying to play out from the back a lot more under their new head coach, but things aren't going swimmingly thanks to pressure from Pathum.

31' Unlucky for Brunner

Ryerson fires a cross into Brunner, but it's touched by a defender on the way through, tricking the forward who miscontrols his touch.

26' Brilliant from Moukoko

Moukoko dinks past one defender, drops another and fires a shot on target from range.

22' Great defending from Luhrs

Lorenzen is again put into space but Yannik Luhrs cleverly shepherds him and the ball out for a goal kick.

18' Adeyemi should have scored!

It's another brilliant pass as Brandt is put through in acres of space and squares the ball to Adeyemi, however, the ball is just behind him and he fires wide from close range.
camera-photo

14' GOAL: Pathum take the lead!

It's former Werder Bremen man Melvyn Lorenzen who gives the home side the lead as he's played through one-vs-one and finishes expertly.

14' A lively contest

Both teams are really going for it here, with Pathum defending brilliantly to stop BVB taking an early lead.

11' First BVB corner

Brandt attacks and tries to find Adeyemi in the box but Sanchai cuts out the ball for a corner.

9' Brunner denied by the rain!

BVB's young forward is looking lively down the left hand side but one attack is stopped by the ball getting caught up in a puddle.

6' First corner to the home side

It's more sloppy play from Dortmund before a shot is sent behind for a corner.

3' Another Pathum chance!

Some sloppy play sees Pathum's Gomis run through midfield and get a shot away, but it's well off target.

1' Dortmund get us underway

BVB kick us off and keep total control of the ball for the opening minute before a disastrous Süle backpass nearly results in a Pathum opener.

Delayed kick off

There's a slight delay to proceedings here but we'll soon be ready to go with Brandt leading Dortmund out.
camera-photo

Who are Pathum United?

For anyone new to Pathum United, they are the reigning Thai League Cup champions. The Rabbits were founded in 1979 as Bangkok Glass before becoming BG Pathum United in 2018 and the club won their sole league title in 2021. Keep an eye out for Melvyn Lorenzen (pictured), their London-born Uganda international with German citizenship, who featured 14 times in the Bundesliga for Werder Bremen and scored one goal - an effort against Hannover in December 2014.
camera-photo

A Dortmund debut

And we're not talking about the players. BVB will use their new cup jersey for 2024/25 for the first time today. Titled "History Remade", it's a patchwork remix of this year's home shirt, incorporating elements from iconic previous jerseys, such as the one worn in the 2013 UEFA Champions League final.

More on those teams

Şahin has named his starting XI for today, with new No.10, Julian Brandt, taking the armband. There are four changes from the team that drew 1-1 against Erzgebirge Aue before BVB departed for Asia, as Yannik Lührs, Ayman Azhil, Felix Nmecha and Paris Brunner all start.

Dortmund starting XI

Meyer - Ryerson, Lührs, Süle, Rothe - Nmecha, Azhil - Adeyemi, Brandt (c), Brunner - Moukoko

Fans turned out in their droves to see Dortmund take part in practice for the first time after landing in Bangkok.

A busy summer so far

Having lost club legends Mats Hummels and Marco Reus, BVB have been hard at work in the transfer market, landing Serhou Guirassy and Waldemar Anton from Stuttgart. Neither player has travelled to Asia, though, with focus instead on academy stars such as Paris Brunner and Kjell Wätjen.

Şahin on Bangkok's welcome

“You can tell from the great reception how big Borussia Dortmund are, even in Thailand. We’re really looking forward to a short but certainly very beautiful time here. It’s my first time in Thailand. I have heard many good things about Thailand and Bangkok. Unfortunately, we only have very little time here. If I get a free moment, I will of course try to soak up some of the culture here.”

What a welcome in Bangkok!

After an 11 hour flight from Germany, BVB were welcomed at the Don Mueang International Airport by 500 fans.

Nmecha on the Bangkok heat

"There are always circumstances that make it more difficult and that we have to adapt to. Ultimately, it helps us because it challenges us. You feel more energised when you're back at home and don't have to play in such a hot and humid climate."
camera-photo

Felix Nmecha on preparations so far

"First of all, it's a case of getting fit and settling into a rhythm. We also want to win games and gain momentum now, even though it's still pre-season. When we come back, we want to be ready for the season."

More from Şahin

"The people who know me know that my team and I are very hungry. We always want to compete for titles at Borussia Dortmund. My expectations of myself and my players are extremely high."
camera-photo

Şahin on pre-season so far

"Our preparations have gone well so far, we're taking steps forward. We want to take an additional step on Sunday too – that's what I'm expecting prior to the match here. For me as a coach, it's important to already recognise now where we want to be. That's all part of a process but it needs to go in the right direction from the beginning."

Şahin and Nmecha speak to the media

After landing in Bangkok, it was straight to a press conference for Nuri Şahin and Felix Nmecha ahead of their match against BG Pathum United. They were joined on stage by opposition coach coach Makoto Teguramori and team captain Chanathip Songkrasin.
