Champions League runners-up last season, Dortmund have impressed once again in the revamped league phase. They kicked off against La Liga leaders Barcelona with four wins from five and among the clutch of teams in the driving seat for automatic qualification to the round of 16. Visiting Barcelona, spearheaded by former BVB striker Robert Lewandowski, did create chances in the early stages, but the Black-Yellows responded in kind and might have gone in at the break in front, had Marcel Sabizter not snatched at Julien Duranville's 17th-minute cross. Serhou Guirassy also forced a strong save from Iñaki Peña, albeit from an offside position.
Guirassy did have the ball in the net after the restart, but the Dortmund No.9 was adjudged to have strayed offside when he converted Jamie Gittens' cross. Raphinha scored with Barcelona's next attack - the Brazilian finishing well folllowing smart play by former RB Leipzig man Dani Olmo - but BVB hit back almost immediately. Pau Cubarsí brought down Guirassy, who calmly slotted away the resultant penalty for 1-1. Guirassy completed his brace to cancel out a goal from Ferran Torres, but the Barcelona substitute had the final say, scoring on the counter to inflict only a second Champions League loss of the campaign on Nuri Şahin's team.
Match stats
Dortmund are ninth in the Champions League standings on 12 points - a point outside the top eight - ahead of games against Bologna (a) and Shakhtar Donetsk (h).
The result marked BVB's first home loss in all competitions in 2024/25.
Guirassy's eight goal involvements is the most by any Dortmund player in their first six appearances in the competition.
The Black-Yellows are still chasing their first win against Barcelona (D2, L3).
Lewandowski scored 103 goals in 187 competitive appearances for Dortmund, before putting more goals past BVB than any club he's faced during an eight year-spell at Bayern (27 in 26 games).
Flick won the 2019/20 Champions League with Bayern as part of a record-equalling sextuple of trophies. Pep Guardiola's Barcelona are the only other club to have achieved the feat (2009).

Full-time: Dortmund 2-3 Barcelona
An absolutely breath-taking second half of football! Raphinha opened the scoring not long after the restart and exploded the game into life. Guirassy converted a penalty not 10 minutes later. But substitute Ferran Torres came on to make an instant impact, pouncing on a loose ball to smash home and restore Barcelona's lead. Once again, Guirassy responded, courtesy of a goalkeeping error, and some clever play from Groß. Groß then turned from hero to villain by giving the ball away after a BVB corner, allowing a ruthless counter-attack for the visitors, which was finished by Torres again.
There are to be four additional minutes at the end of this half.
85'
Torres with a brace!
After a BVB corner, Groß gives the ball away cheaply and Barcelona instantly counter. A long ball finds Yamal, who quickly feeds it into the path of Torres. It looks as though the angle is too tight for the Spaniard, but he manages to squeeze it into the bottom left corner from inside the box.
Nmecha plays a long ball over to Malen on the right. He drives at the Barca goal and lets a shot fly, which Peña palms away, before the assistant raises his flag.
79'
Guirassy at the double!
Guirassy brings Dortmund level again. Yan Couto spots a run from Groß in the middle of the park. He plays it through for him to run onto and Peña comes charging off his line, but Groß gets there first. The German just taps it round the keeper to Guirassy, who has an empty net to aim at and strokes it home.
Gittens immediately goes right up the other end, beating Koundé and swinging a cross in. Guirassy meets it with his head, but heads over from inside six yards.
75'
Torres gives Barcelona the lead!
Koundé does well to get to the byline. He cuts it back to Fermín López on the edge of the box, who shoots first time. Kobel does well to make the first save but Torres pounces on the rebound to retake the lead for his side.
A fine move from Barcelona there. Lamal plays it down the line to Raphinha, who squares it to Olmo. The Spaniard gets a powerful shot away, forcing a fantastic save out of Kobel.
68'
Bensebaini down
There is a stoppage as the full-back is down for an extended period, receiving treatment.
62'
High from Guirassy
Reyna crosses from the right to Guirassy on the edge of the box. He takes the shot on first time but it balloons well over the bar.
Olmo picks the ball up in the middle of the park and drives at the BVB defence. He slips a clever ball into the path of Raphinha, who just manages to stay onside and dispatches a composed finish into the bottom right corner.
Reyna chips it through to Sabitzer, who plays a short ball to Gittens. The winger crosses to Guirassy at the back post who pokes home the chance, but the assistant had his flag raised quickly there.
47'
Good counter-attacking opportunity
Reyna plays a lovely reverse pass down the line for Gittens to run onto. He has space to run into and Barcelona are caught high, but Koundé recovers well to make the challenge.
46'
Back underway!
Dortmund get the ball rolling again for the second half. Nuri Şahin makes one change at half time, replacing Julian Ryerson for Yan Couto at right-back.
The half ends goalless for both sides. Barcelona started the better of the two teams, with chances falling for Raphinha, Olmo and Yamal. But Dortmund grew into the game and started fashioning chances of their own after 15 minutes. Duranville's looked very lively and Nmecha is controlling things in the middle of the park, but both sides have lacked that incisive edge in the final third. Dortmund have also often been caught offside by Barcelona's high defensive line.
This time, Bensebaini puts a cross in towards the striker, who goes down. BVB scream for a penalty, which is checked by VAR and dismissed.
40'
Golden chance for Guirassy
Reyna floats a delicate ball from the left of the Barcelona box towards the back post, where Guirassy is arriving. He meets the header from six yards out, forcing an excellent reflex save from Peña, but it wouldn't have counted anyway - the assistant had his flag raised.
38'
Nmecha down
The midfielder stays down after a physical challenge from Casadó in the middle of the park. After some treatment, he's back to his feet.
36'
Effort by Koundé
The ball bounces around the BVB area and pops up for Koundé, who strikes it powerfully on the half-volley, but Kobel palms it away.
34'
Corner for the visitors
Yamal won it and Rafinha takes it short. It's worked back to Yamal, who crosses from the right, but Ryerson heads it clear.
30'
Reyna shoots
Duranville gets down the right flank again and squares it to Reyna on the edge of the box, whose shot is narrowly wide. The assistant had his flag raised against Duranville in the build-up, though.
27'
Gittens crosses
The young English winger finds himself in space down the left and attempts a cross in towards Guirassy, but the cross is overhit.
Still level
It's been a fiercely contested opening 20 minutes, but neither side has managed to break the deadlock.
The Spaniard beats Bensebaini and Reyna on the edge of the box before letting a shot fly. It's powerful, but straight at Kobel and the keeper punches it away.
17'
Big chance for Sabitzer
Duranville once again gets down the right channel and to the byline. He cuts it back into the middle, finding Sabitzer, but the midfielder snatches at the chance, sending it over the bar. That could've been the opener...
14'
So close from Raphinha
Yamal plays a cross into the area with the outside of his boot. Raphinha arrives unmarked at the back post, connecting with the cross, but sending it narrowly wide of the right post.
12'
Chance squandered
Schlotterbeck switches it high towards Duranville, who's in acres of space down the right. He runs at Baldé and tries to find a teammate in the box, but he misplaces his pass.
11'
Yamal again
The young winger gets on the ball in the BVB box, curling an effort goalwards, but it's straight at Kobel and doesn't trouble the keeper.
8'
Sabitzer goes through
Guirassy slips Sabitzer in on goal, but the angle is tight and his shot is straight at Peña. Guirassy was deemed to have been offside in the build-up, though.
6'
Yamal from distance
The visitors have their first corner of the game, courtesy of fine play from Olmo. It's played to Yamal on the edge of the box, but his effort is well over.
4'
First chances for the visitors
Two huge chances in quick succession for Barcelona. Olmo spins away at the half-way line and plays it out to the left, where it's crossed into the middle, but both he and Lewandowski miss it. Barcelona retain possession and fizz another cross from the right to the back post, but Raphinha can't connect with the ball in the box - that would've been a tap-in.
1'
Early corner
Duranville picks the ball up on the right and instantly tries to beat Baldé. His attempted cross is blocked behind for a corner, but BVB can't make anything of it.
1'
And we're off!
It's Barcelona who get the ball rolling here in Dortmund.
Double game day
Three of the players named on the Dortmund bench (Wätjen, Kabar and Benkara) were already involved in the UEFA Youth League game between these sides earlier today, which the visitors won 3-2.
Surprising selection
The inclusion of Julien Duranville and Giovanni Reyna in Dortmund's starting XI has taken many by surprise, considering they have not been regular starters for BVB this season and both Donyell Malen and Pascal Groß are named on the bench. Could this tweak prove to be a masterful stroke of tactics by Şahin?
More on those teams:
Nuri Şahin makes three changes out of necessity from the side he named at the weekend in Dortmund's 1-1 draw with Gladbach. Can comes into the heart of defence to fill in for the injured Süle. Beier misses out with a knee problem, with Reyna taking his place. Groß drops to the bench in favour of Duranville. By contrast, Hansi Flick names an unchanged side from Barcelona's last outing: a 2-2 draw with Real Betis at the weekend.
The Black-and-Yellows have lost only one of thier last nine home games against Spanish opponents while they have won 10 of their last 19 games at the Signal Iduna Park overall in European competition.
The last time these sides met in Dortmund, the teams played out a 0-0 draw. That game came back in the 2019/20 group stages, when both sides progressed to the knockouts. Marc-Andre ter Stegen saved a Marco Reus' penalty on that occasion at SIgnal Iduna Park. Of the sides' four games overall, Barça have won two and there have been two draws.
What a treat we have in store this evening with hosts and last season's UEFA Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund all set to take on the mighty Barcelona. These sides boast a combined six European Cups between them.
"We will play in a fantastic stadium and with a great atmosphere. The atmosphere will be wonderful and we want to take advantage of it as well. It gives us extra motivation."
Aside from the obvious former BVB man Lewandowski, there are two other familiar faces in Barcelona's ranks, but they're both injured and unavailable. They are Germany no.1 Marc-André ter Stegen and his fellow former Gladbach player Andreas Christensen.
The road ahead
After taking on giants Barca, Dortmund travel to newbies Bologna in Italy before closing out the league phase at home to European regulars Shakhtar Donetsk.
Dortmund team news
Along with Süle, Brandt, Waldemar Anton and Filippo Mané are all out for Wednesday. Maximilian Beier could be included after limping off against Gladbach, while Şahin has said he will make a late decision on Emre Can and Karim Adeyemi after their returns from long-term injuries.
Şahin also added that Niklas Süle will be out for the next few weeks, commenting: "It's the same [ankle] injury. We'll decide the next steps after the game. The fact is that it will take time."
Nuri Şahin on facing Barcelona
"A very good opponent with an extraordinary coach, who has managed in the shortest period of time to get across his idea to the team. They press very high, have clear procedures when pressing and counter pressing. Nonetheless, we will be courageous. We will not change our philosophy. We want to play out from the back cleanly. If you only play long balls, the ball comes back more quickly than you can imagine."
Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski is returning to Dortmund for the first time since leaving Bayern, the team to which 'Lewa' made the switch after leaving BVB in 2014. The Poland captain made his name playing for Die Schwarzgelben, with one particular highlight coming in a Champions League semi-final first leg against Real Madrid in 2012/13, in which Lewandowski put on a dazzling display and scored four goals to set BVB on their way to that year's final.
The Dortmund winger has scored in each of his last four games, playing a starring role in key fixtures against Freiburg, Dinamo Zagreb, Bayern and Gladbach. Defenders just cannot deal with the Englishman when he cuts in off the left and fires a right-footed shot towards goal.
Dortmund were held to a score draw in their last Bundesliga outing against Gladbach. The result leaves them on 21 points and in sixth place after 13 games.
Dortmund - the story so far
Last season's finalists have cemented their reputation as Champions League specialists with four wins in five matches - leaving them level on points with Barcelona in fourth. Their opponents are also the only team to have scored more than Dortmund's 16 goals so far in the group stage. Dortmund won 3-0 at Dinamo Zagreb last time around.
Hansi Flick has led Barcelona to a strong start in the first Champions League campaign under his tenure. Barca have won their last four games in the competition, including the 4-1 win over his former club, Bayern Munich, in October. They are third in the table on 12 points.
