There was a distinct American influence in Borussia Dortmund's 3-0 friendly win over Bologna on Friday, with both Gio Reyna and Lennard Maloney getting their names on the scoresheet in Altach, Austria.

Dortmund 3-0 Bologna
Goals: 1-0
Reyna (24'), 2-0 Maloney (42'), 3-0 Tigges (45')

There was no early tentativeness from either side, with both opting to attack right from the outset. However, once Dortmund settled into their rhythm they quickly gained the upper hand in terms of possession and territory, with the majority of the first 45 minutes played deep inside Bologna's half. Nico Schulz, Julian Brandt and Marco Reus caused the Italian side frequent problems down the left, but it was Reyna who broke the deadlock, smashing in on the rebound after Erling Haaland had been denied by Lukasz Skorupski. That goal seemed to deflate Bologna somewhat, and BVB extended their lead shortly before the interval through Maloney's fine header from Reus' cross - his first goal for Dortmund - before Tigges effectively sealed the win seconds before the half-time whistle.

The second half was delayed by 10 minutes due to heavy rain, but once it got going again there was no respite for Bologna, who remained on the back foot throughout. Reus volleyed wide, Julian Brandt had an effort saved when one-on-one, substitute Youssoufa Moukoko was unable to make the most of a three-on-one situation and Haaland fired wide as chances came and went seemingly by the minute for Marco Rose's side. Reus also rattled the crossbar with a long-range effort, but there were no further goals as Dortmund ended their pre-season fixtures with a comfortable and well-deserved triumph.

Match stats

  • Haaland scored 41 goals in 41 games last season, taking his Dortmund tally to 57 strikes in 59 appearances in all competitions since joining the club in January 2020.
  • Malen brought 19 league goals and eight assists from 32 outings to the table for PSV in 2020/21 as the team finished as runners-up to eventual Eredivisie champions Ajax.
  • Bologna coach Mihajlovic scored one and set up another in Red Star Belgrade's 2-2 European Cup semi-final second-leg draw with Bayern in 1990/91, as Red Star eventually went on to lift the trophy.
  • Sansone played 32 times and scored twice for Bayern's reserves, without making a senior appearance but he was named on the bench for the club's 4-2 win over Freiburg on Matchday 10 of the 2010/11 Bundesliga campaign.
  • Soriano, meanwhile, didn't graduate from the youth sides but did feature on 38 occasions and scored nine goals for Bayern's U17 and U19 teams.
  • These two sides have never met competitively, with FC Vorwärts Berlin the only German team to take on Bologna in a full fixture. Vorwärts emerged victorious over the Italians in the first round of the 1970/71 UEFA Cup.

As it happened!

FULL TIME!

The match comes to an end and Dortmund finish as deserved winners after a largely one-sided encounter.

87' NEXT SUBS

Schulz and Maloney go off, Rothe and Kleine-Bekel come on.

84' RAIMONDO FIRES WIDE

The Bologna attacker, who's only just come on, goes as close as his team have come all game with a left-footed shot that skims just wide of the post.

82' RUNNING DOWN THE CLOCK

Dortmund are happy to play the ball among themselves now, the hard work having been done in the first half.

78' REUS HITS THE BAR!

The Dortmund captain smashes a brilliant, dipping shot at goal from 30 yards. It leaves the goalkeeper completely rooted to the spot, but hits the crossbar and bounces away.

76' NEXT BOLOGNA SUB

Raimondo comes on for Casadei.

75' REYNA OFF

The 18-year-old is replaced by Gürpüz.

74' WIDE FROM MOUKOKO

Lovely footwork from Reyna to skip past two opponents in midfield. He slides the ball forward to Moukoko, who takes a touch and shoots with his left from the edge of the box, but it goes wide.

71' DORTMUND GO THREE ON ONE!

Moukoko does well to rob a defender of the ball. He immediately shifts gears and sprints forward, and has two teammates in support. The teenager opts to go it alone though, and his shot is blocked. Reus lets him know in no uncertain terms what he thought of that.

69' DOUBLE CHANGE FOR DORTMUND

Haaland and Dahoud go off, replaced by Kamara and Pasalic.

67' GOOD FROM REYNA

The USA international surges forward and across the edge of the Bologna box, holding off a couple of defenders before slipping a pass into Passlack. He crosses into the middle for Haaland, but it's wayward and goes out for a goal kick.

63' HAALAND FIRES WIDE

Reus scampers into the box down the left and pulls the ball back into the middle for Haaland. He shoots first time but can only guide it narrowly the wrong side of the post.

62' WHOLESALE CHANGES

Bologna make eight substitutions: Urbanski, Annan, Denswil, Casadei, Pagliuca, Binks, Mbaye and Bardi all come on. Vignato, Dijks, Bonifazi, Schouten, Sansone, Soumaoro, Silvestri and Skorupski all go off.

61' MOUKOKO ON

The teenage forward replaces Tigges for Dortmund.

60' SANSONE SHOOTS

This is probably Bologna's best chance of the game as Sansone finds himself in a pocket of space, about 25 yards from goal. He wastes no time in shooting and his low, swerving effort is going in - but Kobel watches it all the way and makes a good save.

57' PASSLACK ALMOST IN

Haaland tears into space down the left and pings a cross into the Bologna box. There's nobody there except the arriving Passlack, but Skorupski has sensed the danger and rushes out, clattering into the Dortmund right-back as he clears.

55' HAALAND BLOCKED

Three goals in a game and not one of them belongs to Haaland? He's doing all he can to change that, but his right-footed effort from the edge of the area is charged down by a defender before the goalkeeper is called into action.

52' RARE BOLOGNA ATTACK

Orsolini finds some space on the right and curls an inviting cross into the middle. Papadopoulos is first to it though, and hooks clear for a corner.

50' BRANDT GOES ONE ON ONE!

Reyna plays a lovely pass into Brandt as he charges into the left-hand side of the box. He's only got Skorupski to beat, but seems to get caught in two minds between passing to Haaland in the middle and dinking it over the goalkeeper. He ends up doing a mix of the two, but Skorupski makes the save.

48' OPENING FOR REUS

Skorupski comes off his line to punch clear a cross into the box, but he makes a mess of it and the ball loops to Reus, outside the box. He loops a first-time volley towards goal, but it's a difficult one to take and it bounces wide.

46' SECOND HALF

And we're off again!

10-MINUTE DELAY

Heavy rain has delayed the start of the second half.

HALF-TIME

It's a comfortable lead at the break for Marco Rose's side, and it's no less than they deserve. They've been far the better team - and now have the goals to show it.

45' TIGGES GRABS DORTMUND'S THIRD!

Dortmund's superiority finally translates to the scoresheet as Tigges, who's had a good game, puts clear daylight between the sides at the interval

42' MALONEY MAKES IT TWO!

Reus whips in a devilish cross from the left. Maloney is unmarked at the back post and guides a brilliant header back across goal, leaving the goalkeeper wrong-footed. Two goals, two American scorers for Dortmund today.

37' REUS ALMOST IN

The Dortmund captain plays a one-two with Haaland on the edge of the box, but his touch on the return pass is a little too heavy, allowing Skorupski to dart off his line to nick it off his toe.

35' BVB PROBING

Bologna can barely get out of their own penalty area, let alone their own half right now. Dortmund are just too quick, aggressive and intense.

31' ONE SIDED AND LOPSIDED

Dortmund remain well in control here and are seemingly getting behind the Bologna defence at will, particularly down the left wing, where Reus, Brandt, Schulz and Tigges are combining well. There's been very little action down the opposite flank, however.

28' DIJKS OFF THE LINE!

Dortmund continue to attack and Tigges shoots from an angle on the left from Schulz's cross. It squirms past the goalkeeper and is rolling in, slowly, but Dijks manages to get back to scoop it off the line!

24' REYNA PUTS DORTMUND IN FRONT!

Reyna flicks a pass into Haaland's path and his momentum takes him past two defenders into the box. Skorupski manages to block his shot again but the rebound falls at the feet of Reyna, who smashes it in from 10 yards.

21' CHANCE FOR HAALAND!

Brandt dinks an inviting cross from the left to the back post for Haaland, who beats his marker to win the header, but Skorupski paws it off the line.

19' DORTMUND ON TOP

Aside from that brief opening for Svanberg a few minutes ago, Bologna haven't really spent much time in Dortmund's half. The Black-and-Yellows are pouring forward in numbers and it feels like the breakthrough is a matter of when, rather than if.

16' HAALAND ALMOST IN

Dahoud pings a brilliant pass from the halfway line over the top of the Bologna defence, finding Haaland's run. The striker leaps into the air to control it at full stretch, but can't get his toe on it and Skorupski dashes out to smother.

14' TIGGES SHOT

Reus slides the ball into the path of Tigges as he runs into the left-hand side of the Bologna box. He shoots low, but Skorupski reads it well and gets down to make a good save.

10' FIRST CHANCE FOR BOLOGNA

Svanberg is first to a cross into the Dortmund box from the right, but his header loops well over the crossbar.

8' HAALAND GOAL DISALLOWED

Dortmund's pressing high up the pitch proves too much for Bologna and Haaland wins possession on the left, plays a quick one-two with Tigges and slots the ball into the net from an angle, but the referee's assistant has his flag raised for offside against the Norwegian forward.

6' GLIMPSE OF AN OPENING

Tigges does well to open up the pitch with a long ball out to the left to Schulz. He gets to the byline and crosses into the middle, but it's too high and too strong for any of his teammates and ends up going out for a throw.

4' LIVELY START

Both teams are going for it early on here. There's no standing off to wait and settle into the game; it's all-out attack at both ends of the pitch!

1' EARLY CHANCE FOR HAALAND!

Reyna finds space on the right and crosses low into the box. Tigges is arriving in the middle and Haaland at the back post, but neither can quite get a toe on the ball to poke it over the line from close range.

1' KICK-OFF!

Dortmund get the ball rolling!
