Thorgan Hazard strikes again as Borussia Dortmund edge past Cologne

After his double in the DFB Cup at the weekend, Thorgan Hazard led the charge for Borussia Dortmund once again on Saturday, opening the scoring in a 2-0 win at home to Cologne.

Borussia Dortmund 2-0 Cologne
Goals: 1-0 Hazard 40' (assist: Bellingham), 2-0 Tigges 64' (assist: Brandt)

Having taken four points off Dortmund last season, including a 2-1 win in this fixture, Cologne began aggressively here and took the game to their hosts in a bid for more of the same. But despite pinning BVB back inside their own half for much of the opening 20 minutes or so they struggled to create clear openings, although Mark Uth did have the ball in the net only for it to be ruled out for handball. Marco Reus sliced a shot wide following good work from Marius Wolf as Marco Rose’s side began to grow into the game, and they took the lead just before the break when Hazard glanced in Jude Bellingham’s inviting cross from the right.

The second half was almost a carbon copy of the first: Cologne were on top for long periods, although this time they fashioned a number of scoring chances. Anthony Modeste had the majority of them, drilling just wide before seeing a header saved by Kobel, while Uth also made a nuisance of himself, but was likewise unable to get the better of the Dortmund goalkeeper. That lack of a cutting edge came back to haunt them once again, as the home side extended their lead midway through the half when Steffen Tigges headed in a Julian Brandt corner soon after coming off the bench. To their credit, the Billy Goats continued to search for a way back into the match even as the final whistle approached, but despite ending the game with 18 shots to Dortmund's seven, they could not find a way past Kobel, who helped the home side to an eighth league win of the season.

Match stats

  • Hazard has now scored three goals in his last two competitive outings. His 41st Bundesliga goal was also his first header.
  • This season, BVB have always gone on to win games in which they lead at half-time (eight occasions).
  • Bellingham registered his third assist of 2021/22.
  • Tigges scored his first ever Bundesliga goal, and did so with his first touch of the game.
  • His goal was also the first time a Dortmund substitute has scored in the league in 2021/22.
  • Modeste had five shots in this game; as team Dortmund only managed seven.
