Karim Adeyemi scored two and made another as Borussia Dortmund leapfrogged Heidenheim at the top of the Bundesliga, whilst extending Nuri Şahin's unbeaten start as head coach to four competitive matches.

Borussia Dortmund 4-2 Heidenheim
Goals: 1-0 Malen 12' (assist: Adeyemi), 2-0 Adeyemi 17' (assist: Brandt), 2-1 Pieringer 39' (assist: Traoré), 3-1 Adeyemi 41' (assist: Ryerson), 3-2 Breunig (pen. 73'), 4-2 Can (pen. 90'+3)

Heidenheim arrived at the Signal Iduna Park as unbeaten Bundesliga leaders, but were soon knocked off their perch by an electric Dortmund opening. Donyell Malen swept home from Adeyemi just 12 minutes in, despite Heidenheim goalkeeper Kevin Müller's best efforts to keep the ball out. Malen was involved again moments later, breaking away and feeding Julian Brandt, who smartly helped it on for Adeyemi to fire under Müller from inside the penalty area. The visitors then began to play their way into the game as Léo Scienza forced the first meaningful save out of Gregor Kobel. Marvin Pieringer did pull a goal back with a classic centre-forward's header, only for Dortmund to restore their two-goal cushion before the first half was out. Debutant Serhou Guirassy brilliantly dummied Julian Ryerson's low centre into the box, where Adeyemi sent a cool first-time finish past Müller.

Dortmund's engine had purred for much of the first half, but took a little time to warm up in the second. Malen dragged a shot wide wide with almost an hour gone, while Guirassy - having not played competitively since June - showed some rust on the gears when attempting to control Adeyemi's selfless pass into the box. Marcel Sabitzer had a fourth BVB goal ruled out for handball in the build-up, before Müller repelled Guirassy's acrobatic attempt at a first net buster in a black-and-yellow shirt. Maximilian Breunig set up a nerve-shredding finale with a well-taken penalty - awarded following Niklas Süle's foul on Mikkel Kaufmann. Frank Schmidt's team had come from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 in Dortmund last season, but lightning did not strike twice in the Matchday 3 opener. A handball decision against Omar Traoré allowed substitute Emre Can to sink a late penalty and send the five-time Bundesliga winners top of the table, overnight at least, with seven points from three games under Şahin.
