Marco Reus sends Borussia Dortmund past Hoffenheim into DFB Cup last 16

xwhatsappmailcopy-link

Marco Reus scored the only goal as Borussia Dortmund booked their place in the DFB Cup round of 16 with victory over Hoffenheim.

Borussia Dormund 1-0 Hoffenheim
Goals: 1-0 Reus 43' (assist: Bynoe-Gittens)
Sent off: Kabak (90'+3)

Dortmund survived a huge scare when Ihlas Bebou forced the fit-again Gregor Kobel into a parried save inside the opening 120 seconds. The loose ball fell for Mergim Berisha in the six-yard box, but his effort was cleared off the line by Nico Schlotterbeck. BVB heeded the warning, and began to create chances of their own as Reus and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens crashed efforts wide from range. The Black-Yellows' persistence told late in the first half, when Reus swept in Bynoe-Gittens' pull-back for the opening goal, albeit with a hint of a mis-kick.

Dortmund threatened a second goal soon after the restart, but Youssoufa Moukoko's shot was too close to Oliver Baumann in the Hoffenheim goal. The visitors responded in kind, with Maximilian Beier stinging the palms of Kobel, but were unable to make any serious in-roads thereafter. Substitute Donyell Malen squandered a couple of promising openings, and Ozan Kabak was sent off for two bookable offences, as Dortmund extended their unbeaten start in domestic competition to 11 matches, ahead of Saturday's Klassiker with Bayern Munich.

Match stats

  • Reus scored his 21st DFB Cup goal.

  • Dortmund have won their last six competitive meetings with Hoffenheim – the best run in the 35-game history of this fixture.
  • Hoffenheim have won only one of their last 10 DFB Cup ties against fellow Bundesliga clubs (5-1 vs. Schalke at this stage last season).

Form guide

BVB are undefeated on the domestic front this season while last weekend's 3-3 Bundesliga draw against Eintracht Frankfurt stalled a three-game winning streak that included an impressive 1-0 win away to Newcastle in the Champions League. TSG had a four-match winning sequence ended by Dortmund in September while tonight's visitors have won two and lost one since then.

A sell out

We can expect a typically special atmosphere at the superb Signal Iduna Park after Dortmund announced that tonight's game is a sell out, with every seat at the 81,365 capacity stadium taken.

"Big plans"

A one-time DFB Cup winner in charge of BVB, coach Edin Terzic, explained that the Black-and-Yellows have ".. prepared meticulously and professionally to give it our all to play a really good home game," against Hoffenheim. "We have big plans in this competition and want to make it into the next round with a home win," the tactician added.

"A complete game"

Hoffenheim boss Pellegrino Matarazzo would love nothing more than to go all the way in this season's DFB Cup but the New Jersey native understands his team are facing a big challenge this evening: "I find it exciting that you can win a title in just a few games," the tactician explained. "We also know that we are not the favourites [this evening] and we need a top performance; a complete game. That's the goal, and the goal is to advance one round too."

History on their side

If recent history is anything to go by, Dortmund will be confident of progressing here. They have won 12 of their last 13 DFB Cup home matches, while they have beaten Hoffenheim on both occasions when they two have met in this competition. Their opponents, meanwhile, have won just one of their last nine matches against Bundesliga clubs in the DFB Cup.

First-round results

In the competition's opening stage, both teams earned resounding wins. Dortmund won 6-1 away at Schott Mainz, while Hoffenheim beat Lübeck 4-1, also away from home.

Dortmund team news

Edin Terzić, too, faces some selection headaches. Felix Nmecha, after scoring his first Dortmund goal in the 1-0 UEFA Champions League win over Newcastle United, is likely to miss a second game in a row with a muscle problem, while Mats Hummels and Emre Can will be unavailable. Gregor Kobel needed to come off early in the draw with Frankfurt, but his issue isn't deemed to be too serious, meaning he could even start. Julian Duranville and Mateu Morey will not be able to play, although Julian Brandt could return to the starting line-up after coming on from the bench at the weekend.

Hoffenheim team news

Pellegrino Matarazzo has a number of absentees to contend with for this encounter. There may be good news in regards to Andrej Kramarić, who could have recovered from a thigh injury in time for this clash, but Dennis Geiger and Stanley Nsoki will not be available. Florian Grillitsch is another who will be on the sidelines, as will Pavel Kadeřábek, although Ozan Kabak could be in contention to feature after recovering from a shoulder issue.

Watch: Hoffenheim 1-3 Dortmund - previous match-up

Dortmund travelled Sinsheim at the end of September during Matchday 6 of the Bundesliga campaign. Despite having Ramy Bensebaini sent off, they still managed to pick up all three points.

Head-to-head

Dortmund have enjoyed plenty of success in this fixture in recent years. They have won each of the previous five encounters, and are unbeaten in the previous seven meetings. Hoffenheim's last triumph came in June 2020, when the 2019/20 campaign was extended due to the coronavirus campaign - TSG prevailed 4-0 at Signal Iduna Park on that occasion.
