Borussia Dortmund to wear one-off coal and steel jersey against Hertha Berlin
Borussia Dortmund will wear a one-off black jersey inspired by the city’s mining and steel heritage for their Matchday 21 fixture at home to Hertha Berlin.
Dortmund as a city and eventually as a club was built on the coal and steel industries that dominated the Ruhr region in the 19th and 20th centuries. The values and virtues that the people of those generations passed on are still engrained in BVB and its fans today.
Yet even though the coal and steel are now gone, the embers still remain and keep the fire going across the city, club and supporters to this day. And to remember the foundations on which everything was built, Borussia have unveiled a limited-edition kit for their coming home game against Hertha.
Die Schwarzgelben will wear an all-black kit inspired by the coal that once fuelled the city – in every respect – while the numbers and letters are designed to look like steel and feature a map of the city. The neck of the shirt also features the words Borussia verbindet – Borussia unites.
The BVB badge as well as partner and Bundesliga logos are also in black.
“The jersey reminds us of the limited-edition coal and steel kit of 2019. It was because of the many requests to bring out a kit like that again that we decided for a relaunch and hope that we’ll make many fans happy,” said club CEO Carsten Cramer.
One-off kits to mark special or historic events have become a common occurrence in the Bundesliga, with Dortmund producing a number of chic designs.
The aforementioned 2019 jersey to mark the club’s 110th anniversary sold out in only 150 minutes, while they also produced a retro neon kit back in 2021.
This year’s little black number goes on sale from 10am CET on Saturday, 18 February and comes with a special piece of coal. It’s only available while stocks last and can be purchased from all club fan shops and online.
