Thorgan Hazard opens account as Borussia Dortmund thrash Udinese
Thorgan Hazard scored his first Borussia Dortmund goal and Gio Reyna made his third appearance for the club as the 2018/19 Bundesliga runners-up brushed aside Italy’s Udinese on Saturday to make it four pre-season wins from four.
Borussia Dortmund 4-1 Udinese (match abandoned after 83 minutes due to rain)
Goals: 1-0 Hazard (6'), 2-0 Götze (19'), 3-0 Weigl (28'), 4-0 Brandt (44'), 4-1 Mandragora (76')
Buoyed by their recent victories over German minnows Schweinberg, Major League Soccer's Seattle Sounders and European champions Liverpool, Dortmund got off to a flyer courtesy of Hazard’s emphatic sixth-minute finish. The Belgian went off injured moments later, with 16-year-old American, Reyna, coming on in his stead, before Mario Götze made it two from the penalty spot after Achraf Hakimi had been brought down in the box. Julian Weigl added a third from range and summer signing Julian Brandt a fourth to cap a dominant first-half display.
Favre rang the changes at half-time, with club captain Marco Reus and the returning Mats Hummels among those to join the action. Heavy rain made life difficult for both sides, though Jacob Bruun Larsen went close to a fifth. Alarm bells rang when Reus hit the deck and lay prone, but Dortmund’s captain fantastic dusted himself off and went within a whisker of adding his name to the scoresheet with 15 minutes to play. Rolando Mandragora pulled one back for Udinese, before the referee brought a premature halt to proceedings due to the relentless downpour.

As it happened!
Borussia Dortmund 4-1 Udinese
Goals: 1-0 Hazard (6'), 2-0 Götze (19'), 3-0 Weigl (28'), 4-0 Brandt (44'), 4-1 Mandragora (76')
83' That's all, folks! - FULL TIME!
The rain is simply too much and referee has blown the full-time whistle early. The second half didn't have the quality of the first but fans of the Black and Yellows will be delighted with what they saw from their team nonetheless.
82' Bookings on both sides
Marco Reus and Sebastian de Maio have both been booked after some shoving in the middle of the pitch.
76' Dortmund 4-1 Udinese
The Italian side have a conslation goal and it's a beauty of a free-kick by Rolando Mandragora. The referee had given a free-kick at the top of the box and the midfielder placed his shot perfectly up and over the wall, giving Roman Bürki no chance.
74' Reus almost makes it five!
The Dortmund captain seems to be very much okay as he bursts forward and directs his shot just the wrong side of the upright.
71' Reus is down
Marco Reus took a bit of a tumble on the wet pitch and stayed down for a while. He made his way off the pitch after getting back to his feet and looks okay to continue.
69' Water, water, everywhere
Every footstep produces a large splash of water and none of the players can really get up to their top speeds as the pitch is full to bursting with rainwater, which continues to fall.
65' Bruun Larsen nearly makes it five
The Black and Yellows manage to work the ball through the Udinese defense and Brunn Larsen fires a snap shot on goal, which is knocked wide for a corner.
62' The deluge continues
The rain continues to not want to play ball and is making the pitch a slip-n'-slide.
54' Udinese make a substitution
Larsen has left the field with what looks like a groin strain and is replaced by Pezzella.
53' Udinese go close!
The Italian side are able to recover the ball and break down the left flank. The cross into the box is a good one and it finds Lasagna, who makes contact, but sees his shot go wide. There might be a sting in the tail here...
50' Rain, rain, go away
The rain has really started to pour down now that the veterans have taken the field. It will be interesting to see if they can manage to move the ball as quickly as they'd like in such uncooperative weather.
45' We're back!
The teams are back on the pitch and ready to get the second half underway. Favre has fielded almost a completely different squad. Marco Reus, Axel Witsel, Mats Hummels, Lukas Piszczek, Paco Alcacer, Nico Schulz, Mahmoud Dahoud, Marius Wolf, Jacob Bruun Larsen, and Manuel Akanji have all come on.
Half Time
The whistle blows and the teams head back to the dressing rooms. It's fair to say that things are going very well for Lucien Favre's men. It will be interesting to see what changes are in store for the second half.
44' Dortmund 4-0 Udinese Brandt makes it four!
Just when it looked like the action was over for the half, Julian Brandt extends the lead. Brandt had drifted forward to be the most forward of Dortmund's attackers, and was quick to react to poor backpass from the Udinese defense. One-on-one with the keeper, there was no way he could miss.
37' Sancho wants one
Jadon Sancho has been excellent and looks like he'd like to get his name on the scoresheet. The ball falls to him at the top of the box, but his curling effort is well wide.
33' Udinese make a change
Antonin Barak has been withdrawn in favour of defender Hidde ter Avest.
28' Dortmund 3-0 Udinese - That's three!
Inside half an hour, Dortmund are 3-0 up. Their young stars are working together excellently and hunting in a pack. They burst forward in unison and get the ball to Julian Weigl, who drives the ball low past the Musso, who had no chance to keep that out
25' Lasagna's off
Udinese finally look to have something of an attacking threat to them, as a ball over the top sees striker Kevin Lasagna alone with room to run. Unfortunately for the Italian side, the flag is up for offside.
22' Nearly three!
Dortmund nearly have a third goal after Reyna does very well to pick out Sancho, but the winger can't quite get enough on it to make the chance pay.
19' Dortmund 2-0 Udinese - Götze scores!
Mario Götze smashes the ball into the back of the net ever so coolly!
18' Penalty!
Achraf Hakimi makes a driving run into the Udinese penalty area and is brought down in the box. The referee points to the spot, and Götze steps up...
16' Reyna wins a corner
Gio Reyna is really up for this one and takes a shot from distance. It's deflected behind, and Dortmund have a chance to work something from a corner.
13' First change - Reyna on!
Lucien Favre has withdrawn goalscorer Thorgan Hazard and brought on Gio Reyna. It looks to be a precaution, with Hazard favouring his leg somewhat. Shouldn't be anything too serious.
12' Sancho the danger man
Dortmund are directing much of their play down the right flank, looking to get the ball to the feet of the young England man who played such a role in last season's title tilt.
6' Dortmund 1-0 Udinese
And they've got that early goal! Hazard is the man to put it away, but the Udinese defense really is to blame for that one. The ball should have been cleared, but instead in falls perfectly for the Belgian, who smashes it home.
3' Black and Yellow in control
This Dortmund side, featuring a couple new faces in Hazard and Balerdi, are looking the stronger side in the early stages and nearly go ahead through good combination play between Götze and Brandt.
Kickoff!
We're underway! Follow along to see if Dortmund can keep up their perfect pre-season with a fourth win!
