Bundesliga 2 set to implement goal-line technology in 2024/25
As part of a DFL general meeting on Monday, 11 December, the partial assembly of Bundesliga 2 has voted in favour of the introduction of goal-line technology in Germany's second tier.
In doing so, the clubs are following a recommendation from the 'Football Commission' and a favourable vote from the Presidium of the DFL e.V., both of which were unanimous. Goal-line technology is set to be implemented in the same way as in the Bundesliga, where seven goal-line cameras are focused on each penalty area for this purpose.
Goal-line technology was first introduced in the Bundesliga in the 2015/16 season and sends a clear signal to the referee in less than a second when the full diametre of the ball has crossed the goal line. Goal disuptes are resolved quickly and the game can thus continue without delay. In addition, the technology also creates visual aids for the video assistants. Images from the 14 additional high-resolution goal-line cameras installed in the stadium are available in the Video Assist Centre, offering additional perspectives for assessing game scenes inside the area.
The introduction of goal-line technology in Bundesliga 2 is planned for the 2024/25 season. The necessary changes to the statutes are to be decided at the DFL general meeting in spring 2024. The practical implementation – analogous to the Bundesliga – will be carried out by the DFL subsidiary Sportec Solutions.
