Hakan Çalhanoğlu's Türkiye win to send Czechia out of UEFA Euro 2024
Hakan Çalhanoğlu scored on his old Hamburg stomping ground to help Türkiye past Czechia and into the UEFA Euro 2024 last 16.
Czechia 1-2 Türkiye
Goals: 0-1 Çalhanoğlu 52' (assist: Yüksek), 1-1 Souček 66', 1-2 Tosun 90'+4
Sent off: Barák 20', Chorý 90'+8
Czechia needed a win after taking one point from their first two games, but Antonín Barák's 20th-minute sending off for two yellow cards left them with a mountain to climb. Group F's bottom team had created the best chance before that flashpoint, with Robin Hranáč heading over from close range. Türkiye were then indebted to a big save from Mert Günok to prevent David Jurásek from giving Czechia the half-time lead. Türkiye found another gear after the restart, though, as Barış Alper Yılmaz was denied by Jindřich Staněk at close quarters. The Czechia keeper pulled of an even better save from Kenan Yıldız, but was powerless to stop former Hamburg and Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Çalhanoğlu's emphatic follow-up. Czechia responded in kind as Tomáš Souček fired in from close range after substitute Tomáš Chorý had beaten Günok to a throw, the goal standing following a review for a possible foul. Substitute Cenk Tosun restored Türkiye's lead in added time, though, as Vincenzo Montella's side sealed their progression as Group F runners-up, with Austria up next in the last 16. Czechia - who lost Chorý to a straight red card deep into added time - are out.
