Edin Džeko signs new Schalke deal
Edin Džeko has extended his stay at Schalke after helping the Royal Blues secure their Bundesliga return as second-division champions following a three-year absence.
The Bosnian – who initially joined the Gelsenkirchen outfit in January on a six-month deal until the conclusion of the 2025/26 campaign – has now penned a one-year contract through to 2027.
“Since arriving at Schalke in the winter, I have been part of a fantastic team and experienced the incredible support of the fans. Winning promotion to the Bundesliga ranks among the highlights of my career. It was unbelievable,” said Džeko, whose six goals and three assists in 11 Bundesliga 2 appearances played a key role in helping Miron Muslić's side secure promotion.
The 40-year-old, who also captained Bosnia and Herzegovina at the FIFA World Cup 2026, added: “Football has made me happy and driven me throughout my life. I am still hungry, and I want to help our team in the Bundesliga too.”
Džeko returned to German football after an illustrious career abroad, having scored 66 goals in 111 Bundesliga appearances for Wolfsburg between 2007 and 2011, helping the Wolves lift their only Bundesliga title in 2008/09. He went on to enjoy spells with Manchester City, where he won two Premier League titles, before representing Roma, Inter Milan, Fenerbahçe and Fiorentina.
“Edin brought something special to Schalke 04 during his first four and a half months at the club. He was a key player and a fan favourite, while his personality meant he always set an example both on and off the pitch," explained Youri Mulder, Schalke's director of professional football.
"Our conversations over the past few weeks made it clear that Edin is still as hungry as ever. We therefore believe that he can help us in the Bundesliga too. Edin is staying at Schalke, which is fantastic news."

The Ruhr club start 2026/27 away to Hallescher in the DFB Cup first round on 24 August, before kicking off their Bundesliga campaign with a trip to Augsburg on 30 August.
