Edin Terzic succeeds Marco Rose as Borussia Dortmund head coach
Borussia Dortmund have appointed Edin Terzic as their new head coach on a three-year contract, the 39-year-old replacing Marco Rose in the hotseat.
Following Rose's dismissal on 20 May, BVB have moved swiftly to fill the void by handing Terzic the reins once more. The local-born tactician took over on an interim basis in December 2020 after the club parted ways with Lucian Favre, overseeing a total of 32 games and winning 20, including the 2020/21 DFB Cup final with a 4-1 triumph over RB Leipzig.
"By now, many people should know how important BVB is in my life," said Terzic. "I would therefore like to sincerely thank Aki Watzke, Michael Zorc and Sebastian Kehl for their great trust and for giving me this great responsibility. We will give everything every day for the success of the team and the entire club."
Terzic remained at the club after Rose's appointment in summer 2021, working as technical director under outbound sporting director Michael Zorc, a role involving squad planning for the senior team as well as coordinating with the youth academy.
Raised in the town of Menden, close to Dortmund, Terzic is a lifelong fan of the club and was first on BVB's books as a scout in 2010. He went on to be assistant coach of the U17, U19 and reserve sides before accepting roles as assistant first-team coach at Besiktas (2013-15) and West Ham United (2015-17), before returning to the Signal Iduna Park as assistant to Favre in 2018.
"We held several intensive discussions with Edin Terzic last weekend and are convinced that this personnel decision is the right one for BVB," said sporting dirctor Sebastian Kehl. "Edin knows our club, the environment, a large part of the team and knows what adjustments we want to make in order to be able to offer our fans successful football. The 2022/23 season is characterised by a new sporting start. We will drive this forward together with great joy and passion."
Terzic's appointment is likely to go down well in the changing room following his successful first stint at the helm as he is a popular figure known for his excellent communication with his players.
Gio Reyna hailed the "new energy and a little bit of new life added" after Terzic's first appointment in December 2020, praising the way “offensively he lets me play my game and be free, which is the most important thing as an attacker”. Teammate Mats Hummels is also a fan. "Since Edin's been here, we're doing a lot of things a lot better," said the defender in February 2021. "And it's not only our results that highlight that."
