Elversberg’s Bundesliga journey begins at home to Bayer Leverkusen

It’s a moment that generations of Elversberg fans had dreamt of but perhaps never thought would come. But just four years on from playing in the fourth tier, they will now begin life in the Bundesliga with a tantalising home fixture against Bayer Leverkusen.

It was only in 2022 that Elversberg achieved promotion from the Regionalliga Südwest to the 3. Liga. Twelve months later they reached the second tier of German football for the first time ever. And now they’re preparing to make their bow on the biggest stage as the Bundesliga’s newest and smallest club.

“We’ve just landed on the moon,” said promotion-winning coach Vincent Wagner after their second-placed finish in Bundesliga 2. Now he sees their challenge of staying up in the Bundesliga as “our journey to Mars”. It’s set to be a thrilling journey across the Bundesliga solar system, starting with blast-off at home to Leverkusen on the opening matchday of 2026/27.

Promoted Elversberg on mission to Mars

The visit of the 2023/24 champions – a team in transition and under new management – is a huge opportunity for the youthful Saarland club to take flight in the Bundesliga and begin their voyage in style.

“It won’t get any easier, but that’s not a bad thing,” Wagner had said of the challenges ahead after completing their climb up the football ladder. A bad thing would be to underestimate this team.

The town of Spiesen-Elversberg – population of 13,000 – may be the smallest locality to host Bundesliga football, but something special has been growing in the area in recent years. Wagner’s side were the top scorers in Bundesliga 2 last season and boasted a better goal difference than champions Schalke.

The Bundesliga’s 59th club will continue to do their thing on their celestial voyage that has placed them among the stars of German football. They have reached their stepping stone on the moon. Next stop: Mars!
