Fin Stevens: Who is the Welsh full-back of newly promoted St. Pauli?
The Wales international is hoping to make a splash in the Bundesliga with St. Pauli. We run the rule over the 21-year-old who had been on the books of an English Premier League side until making the switch to the Hamburg cult club.
Data correct as of 26 July 2024
Fin Stevens
Age: 21 (born 10 April 2003)
Position: Right-back
Club: St. Pauli
Country: Wales (two caps)
Key stats
Stevens will hope to get valuable top-flight playing time in St. Pauli colours after a four-year spell with English Premier League side Brentford. The young Welsh international did play for his former side in the top flight back in January 2022 as a substitute in a 4-1 defeat to Southampton.
After a loan spell to Championship side Cardiff City in 2022/23, the 2023/24 season saw Stevens impress on loan to Oxford United in League One - the third tier of the English football pyramid. He made 34 appearances as his side finished fifth and earned promotion to the second tier via the play-offs.
That solid season earned Stevens his first two full international appearances for Wales in June 2024 friendly encounters with Gibraltar and Slovakia. He previously collected 17 caps for Wales U21, whom he captained on six occasions.
Plays a bit like: Kiliann Sildillia
Like Freiburg's French right-back, Stevens has a strong record in youth international football and is seeking to show his promise on the Bundesliga stage. Stevens packs a strong physique, winning a huge 67 per cent of his challenges for Oxford last season while also showing a strong technical edge with a crisp passing ability.
Did you know?
Stevens showed great resilience by signing for seventh-tier Worthing when released by Arsenal as a 16-year-old. A year for the non-league side was enough to show fellow Premier League outfit Brentford that Stevens had what it takes to make the big time.
What they're saying
"The acquisition of Fin Stevens gives us more depth in the full-back positions and is partly a response to the squeeze we experienced there towards the end of last season. Fin can influence the game at both ends with his dynamism and goes about his work with great determination and maturity for a young player." - St. Pauli Director of Sport, Andreas Bornemann
"Fin prefers to play on the right-hand side but can also be deployed on the left. He's a full-back who likes to drive forward and get into deep positions. He anticipates well and is brave and aggressive in the tackle, switching the play quickly after winning the ball." - St. Pauli Head Coach, Alexander Blessin
"You could tell he had been at a big club like Arsenal by his calmness on the ball and how often he would play one-touch. The ball would come into him and he would already know his next pass. That was really evident compared to other players his age.” - Stevens' coach at Worthing, Adam Hinshelwood
