Freiburg sign midfielder Yannick Engelhardt from Como

Freiburg have signed midfielder Yannick Engelhardt ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, snapping up the 25-year-old midfielder on a permanent basis following his loan spell at Bundesliga rivals Borussia Mönchengladbach last season.

The Werder Bremen youth product returns to Freiburg having represented their second team between 2021-2023, before going on to play for Fortuna Düsseldorf, Como and Gladbach.

He joins up with Julian Schuster's side having made 33 appearances in all competitions for the Foals in 2025/26, following a short spell in Italy where he played 26 times in Serie A for Como.

“Yannick made a very strong impression during his first stint at Freiburg. He reads the game well and is technically very gifted. At his last two clubs, his organisational skills were particularly valued, and now we need to combine those with his attacking abilities,” said Klemens Hartenbach, Freiburg's sporting director.

Engelhardt arrives ready to bolster a midfield that will be without the recently departed Johan Manzambi, who secured a move to Premier League side Aston Villa recently.

Nevertheless, he's eager to hit the ground running and contribute to another exciting season for the club.

“The connection to Freiburg never broke – both with the players and the management," Engelhardt said of his return. "It feels really good to be back in Freiburg and I received a warm welcome. The ambitions here are high, I like that, and I'm hungry to get started.”
