Simon Terodde bagged a brace to move one goal away from equalling the all-time Bundesliga 2 scoring record as Schalke won 2-0 at Hansa Rostock.

Hansa Rostock 0-2 Schalke
Goals: 0-1 Terodde (42’), 0-2 Terodde (49’)

The headline line-up news ahead of kick-off was that Martin Fraisl had been picked in the Schalke goal ahead of veteran Ralf Fährmann, and the new ‘keeper quickly had to justify Dimitrios Grammozis’ decision when he denied Nik Omladic one-on-one. Hansa striker John Verhoek then failed to collect the ball for a second bite of the cherry. Fraisl was beaten not long after as the Ostseestadion went wild, but only for a brief moment before the linesman’s flag ruled out Calogero Rizzuto’s strike for a clear offside. The promoted side dominated the play without creating any further clear-cut chances. They were made to pay by perhaps the greatest predator Bundesliga 2 has seen when Terodde stooped low to divert a Thomas Ouwejan cross from the left past a so far untroubled Markus Kolke for his ninth goal of the campaign and a half-time lead for the Royal Blues.

And Schalke’s poacher-in-chief was at it again after the break. Teenager Mehmet Aydin did the bulk of the work controlling Dominik Drexler’s cross before laying it to the feet of Terodde dead centre six yards out to tap home his second. And the 33-year-old striker almost had a hat-trick – which would’ve seen him tie the division record – but saw his header from a free-kick crash back off the post and away off Kolke. The hosts thought they had a way back into the game when they were awarded a penalty for Ouwejan blocking Thomas Meißner’s shot with his hand, but referee Arne Aarnink reversed his decision after reviewing the scene on the pitchside monitor. The result was perhaps harsh on Rostock but a lesson for last season’s 3. Liga runners-up on their return to the second tier after a decade away. The Royal Blues chalked up their fourth win as they seek an immediate bounce back to the Bundesliga.

Match stats

  • Terodde is now only one goal off Dieter Schatzschneider‘s Bundesliga 2 record of 153 goals.
  • The 33-year-old has 10 goals after eight matchdays of this season. Only once has a player had more at this stage, and that was also Terodde when he got 12 for Cologne in 2018/19.
  • The striker has got 10 of Schalke’s 13 goals this season. He’s either scored or assisted in every league game this term.
  • It’s the 41st time Terodde has scored multiple goals in a Bundesliga 2 game, which is almost every sixth appearance. He’s got three braces already this season.
  • Schalke’s top scorer when they were relegated last season was Matthew Hoppe with six goals. Terodde has already topped that by four in less than a quarter of the time.
  • No Schalke player had ever before reached double figures after eight matchdays in either the Bundesliga or Bundesliga 2.

Matchday 8 round-up

Jahn Regensburg 3-2 Erzgebirge Aue
Goals: 1-0 Beste (7’), 2-0 Besuschkow (11’), 2-1 Kühn (52’), 2-2 Bussmann (88’), 3-2 Albers (90’)

Winless in three, league leaders Regensburg raced into a 2-0 lead through Jan-Niklas Beste and Max Besuschkow, but were pegged back in the second half. The chances flowed after Nicolas Kühn reduced the arrears in the 52nd minute, though it wasn’t until late in the contest the visitors deservedly drew level. Gaëtan Bussmann headed in with two minutes of regulation time remaining, only for Andreas Albers to break Aue hearts with an even later winner.

Karlsruher 1-3 St. Pauli
Goals: 0-1 Gersbeck (o.g. 13’), 0-2 Burgstaller (pen. 45’), 0-3 Kyereh (58’), 1-3 Schleusener (79’)

Karlsruher were up against it from the moment goalkeeper Marius Gersbeck inadvertently fumbled Maximilian Dittgen’s cross into his own net. Gersbeck atoned somewhat with saves from Guido Burgstaller and Jackson Irvine, but was beaten again before the first-half was up. Daniel-Kofi Kyerah went to ground in the penalty box under Tim Breithaupt’s challenge, and Burgstaller made no mistake from the spot. Kyereh got in on the act with Pauli’s third, with substitute Fabian Schleusener’s effort 11 minutes from normal time too little, too late for Karslruher.

Heidenheim 2-1 Darmstadt
Goals: 1-0 Mohr (40’), 1-1 Tietz (52’), 2-1 Schimmer (84’)

There was no shortage of drama between Heidenheim and Darmstadt, with Tim Kleindienst providing the first helping when he missed a 14th-minute penalty. Tobias Mohr made no such mistake, the Heidenheim midfielder firing home his spot-kick after Christian Kühlwetter had been upended by Matthias Bader late in the first half. After Kühlwetter passed up a great chance for a second Heidenheim goal, Phillip Tietz brought Darmstadt back on level terms. However, it was Heidenheim substitute Stefan Schimmer, who had the final say with his 84th-minute winner.

Ingolstadt 1-2 Fortuna Düsseldorf
Goals: 0-1 Hoffmann (57’), 0-2 Zimmermann (74’), 1-2 Kaya (pen. 90’+3)
Red cards: Kastenmeier (84’)

A tepid first half gave way to an all-action second in Ingolstadt. Patrick Schmidt was kicking himself after shooting over with the first real opening when Fortuna’s Andre Hoffmann headed in Khaled Narey’s free-kick just hour of the hour. Fortuna substitute Matthias Zimmermann rifled in a second, but Ingolstadt were given a lifeline when Düsseldorf goalkeeper Florian Kastenmeier was shown his marching orders for handling outside his box. Although Fatih Kaya reduced the arrears from the penalty spot in added time, Fortuna held on.

Paderborn 1-2 Holsten Kiel
Goals: 1-0 Michel (42’), 1-1 Heuer (o.g. 51’), 1-2 Mees (78’)
Red cards: Collins (27’)

Julian Justvan and Fabian Reese traded goal-scoring changes in a frenetic opening. Sven Michel also went close for the hosts, whose early endeavour was stopped in its tracks when defender Jamilu Collins was sent off for two yellow card offences. Michel gave Paderborn a half-time lead, only for Kiel to exploit their numerical advantage in the second period. Finn Porath’s deflected shot kick-started the comeback - not long after Steven Skrzybski had struck the woodwork, substitute Joshua Mees completed the turnaround.

Hamburg 2-2 Nuremberg
Goals: 0-1
Valentini (22’), 1-1 Glatzel (34’), 1-2 Tempelmann (46’), 2-2 Glatzel (80’)

Two promotion hopefuls were left frustrated with a point apiece in a game in which Hamburg twice fought back after going behind thanks to a brace from Robert Glatzel. Enrico Valentini put the visitors ahead with a penalty midway through the first half, but Glatzel restored parity with a well-placed header shortly afterwards. Nuremberg edged ahead early in the second period through Lino Tempelmann, but they subsequently sat back and tried to defend their lead, a tactic that came back to haunt them in the 80th minute as Glatzel struck again to earn the hosts a share of the spoils.

Dresden 3-0 Werder Bremen
Goals: 1-0
Daferner (40’), 2-0 Daferner (66’), 3-0 Schröter (75’)

Bremen’s hopes of bouncing straight back up to the Bundesliga suffered another setback on Sunday as they slipped to a 3-0 defeat in Dresden, their third loss of the campaign leaving the fallen giants in 10th place in the table. Dresden compact at the back and were clinical with their chances at the opposite end, with attacker Christoph Daferner scoring a goal in each half to set the eastern German side on course for victory. Morris Schröter put the seal on the win in the 75th minute, helping fire his side up to sixth in the process.

Hannover 1-2 Sandhausen
Goals: 0-1
Höhn (73’), 0-2 Keita-Ruel (78’), 1-2 Kaiser (82’)

New head coach Alois Schwartz got off to the perfect start in the Sandhausen hotseat, steering his side to just their second win of the season as they bid to climb out of the bottom three. After an edgy, tight affair, the away side punished two defensive mistakes in the closing stages to forge ahead, and although Hannover pulled one back in the 82nd minute, Sandhausen held on to pick up three much-needed points.
