Hoffenheim's wait for a first UEFA Europa League win goes on after defeat to Beşiktaş

Hoffenheim will have to wait even longer for their first win in the UEFA Europa League after being beaten Beşiktaş at the SNP Arena on Thursday night, with Oh Hyeon-gyu's brace sealing their fate.

Hoffenheim 2–3 Beşiktaş
Goals: 0-1 Murillo 60’ (assist: Oh), 1-1 Asllani 68‘(assist: Lemperle), 1-2 Oh 72‘ (assist: Olaitan), 1-3 Oh 79‘ (assist: Fakili), 2-3 Machida 87‘ (assist: Coufal)

The hosts started well, dominating the ball and putting the visitors on the backfoot. Kōki Machida hit the post early on before Adam Hložek hit the side-netting from a tight angle with only Alexander Nübel to beat. Hoffenheim’s pressure soon faded, with Beşiktaş then making life difficult for the hosts. Leandro Trossard fashioned a good opportunity for himself and Oh saw a close range effort blocked by Machida.

The hosts were quick out of the blocks once again in the second 45, but this time Beşiktaş were quicker in getting into the game. They soon began causing Hoffenheim problems, before taking the lead on the hour mark when Michael Murillo poked home from close range following a scramble for the ball in the six-yard area after a corner.

Fisnik Asllani pulled Hoffenheim level with a brilliant turn, run and finish, before a double from Oh left them with too much to do in the closing stages of the game, with Machida’s late goal little more than a consolation. Hoffenheim's next Europa League fixture will also be at home, but to French outfit Lyon on 22 October.

Full-time: Hoffenheim 2-3 Besiktas

The game burst into life in the second 45, with a double from Oh ultimately sealing defeat for Christian Ilzer's men. The hosts' proactivity was ironically their downfall, with Besiktas twice scoring on the break after opening the scoring through Murillo. Asllani initially pulled his side back into the game with a sublime solo goal, but even with Machida's late header Hoffenheim have come away empty-handed tonight.

Watch: More from Ilzer and Kabak

Vincenzo Italiano on facing Hoffenheim

"Hoffenheim are a high-quality, young side, who have been competing near the top of the Bundesliga for many years. We can't afford to underestimate our opponents because of their underwhelming start to the campaign. We need to give 100 percent."

Christian Ilzer on facing Beşiktaş

"They're steeped in tradition and are very ambitious. Their 4-1 win over Marseille in their opening game was a real statement. Even though we're not getting the results we want at the moment, we're heading into Thursday's game full of confidence and want to deliver a good performance against a top side."

Ozan Kabak on facing Beşiktaş

"I was born in Türkiye and grew up in Istanbul, so it's a special game for me. I'm looking forward to it. We've prepared very well and know how much quality we have. We know it's going to be a tough game, but we feel we're capable of getting a good result."

Hajdari to return?

Albian Hajdari missed Saturday's defeat to Hamburg after suffering a knee problem while on international duty with Kosovo. The defender had returned to training but then suffered a foot injury and will now be out of action for several weeks.

Chance to 'show what we're made of'

Reflecting on Hoffenheim's latest setback, striker Fisnik Asllani said: "It wasn't all bad. We need to keep our chins up. We were actually playing well, which is why conceding twice after the second off is so tough to take. We're back in action again on Thursday. We can show what we're made of then."

Beşiktaş: The story so far

Beşiktaş overcame Midtjylland and Hradec Králové in qualifying before seeing off Kauno Žalgiris in the play-offs to reach the league phase. They made an impressive start, too, beating Marseille 4-1 at home on Matchday 1.
