Matchday 8 round-up: Hamburg survive late Holstein Kiel scare to add to winning run

Hamburg extended their winning run in Bundesliga 2 with a very first victory in the division against Holstein Kiel, the Red Shorts moving to provisional pole position after Robert Glatzel, Moritz Heyer and Ludovit Reis all hit the target and the Red Shorts just held their nerve.

Kiel 2-3 Hamburg
Goals: 0-1 Glatzel 39' (assist: Dompe), 0-2 Heyer 69' (assist: Benes), 0-3 Reis (85'), 1-3 Heyer (o.g.) 90+2', 2-3 Bartels (90+3')

Hamburg sat three points and four places above their opponents going into this Matchday 8 encounter yet Kiel could boast a big unbeaten record against the visitors. Having failed to lose any of the last eight league meetings between the teams in a sequence that stretched back some 60 years, the hosts set out with impressive determination to maintain that run. Indeed, so strong was the home side's start, the game could have been billed Kiel versus Daniel Heuer Fernandes. From the moment the HSV goalkeeper got down smartly to palm out Steven Skrzybski's angled header from a corner, it was one-way traffic. Fabian Reese, Timo Becker and Fiete Arp were among those denied in quick succession by the man who, unsurprisingly, leads the division in terms of shots saved. Hamburg had won their previous two games without conceding and with morale high among Tim Walter's men, there was always going to be a response from the Red Shorts. Jean-Luc Dompe tested Thomas Dähne before Sonny Kittel had an effort ruled out for offside. Patrick Erras then cleared off the line from a Bakery Jatta header, but Robert Glatzel wouldn't be denied when he nodded Dompe's super centre past the diving Dähne.

Failure to take advantage of their fine opening almost came back to haunt Kiel once more immediately after the restart. Jatta's cross to the far post was inviting and Glatzel showed his frustration at just failing to arrive in time to convert. Skrzybski tried, and failed, to bring parity but there was an undeniable menace about HSV in the second half that warned of hard times ahead for the home supporters. Sure enough, when Moritz Heyer rose to apply a power header to Laszlo Benes's corner kick, there was nothing Dähne could do to prevent 2-0. Skrzybski spurned one more fine opportunity when running through but by the time Reis netted a fine individual effort, Hamburg appeared headed for one more big win. There was some last-gasp drama though when Heyer's own goal arrived before Fin Bartels netted, but it was too little too late for Kiel.

Match stats

  • Glatzel now has five Bundesliga 2 goals in 2022/23, three of which have been headers, a league best.
  • Eight of Glatzel's last 12 goals have also been headers.
  • Hamburg won their seventh away game in a row in Bundesliga 2, a feat only ever previously achieved by Arminia Bielefeld back in 2019.
  • Kiel were unbeaten in their previous Bundesliga 2 encounters with HSV (W3, D5).
  • Of the 29 different clubs Hamburg have faced in Bundesliga 2, the only two they had never beaten at this level before today were Kiel (eight games) and Union Berlin (two games).

Matchday 8 round-up

Nuremberg 1-0 Arminia Bielefeld
Goals: 1-0 Templemann (90')

Bielefeld's frustrating start since relegation from the top flight continued on Matchday 8 as they fell to a last-gasp goal in Nuremberg, suffering a fifth defeat of the season and first under new head coach Daniel Scherning. The home side dominated for the vast majority of the match, taking 20 shots at goal compared to Bielefeld's six, but it wasn't until the final whistle approached that Lino Templemann broke the deadlock when he thundered home a header to give Der Club their first win since Matchday 5.

Paderborn 3-0 Regensburg
Goals: 1-0
Hoffmeier (21’), 2-0 Leipertz (69’), 3-0 Pieringer (86’)
Red card: Breitkreuz (68’)

Marvin Pieringer was on the scoresheet for fifth time this season as free-scoring Paderborn helped themselves to a 3-0 victory over 10-man Jahn Regensburg to jump back to the top of the table. Marcel Hoffmeier opened the scoring, sneaking in at the back post to tuck home for his first goal of the season. Robert Leipertz added a second shortly after the hour mark, capitalising on Dejan Stojanovic’s spill from Julian Justvan’s free-kick. Pieringer added the third to cap another fine performance for the hosts’ sixth win of the season.

Fortuna Düsseldorf 3-1 Hansa Rostock
Goals: 1-0
Kownacki (10’), 2-0 Sobottka (27’), 2-1 Fröde (61’), 3-1 Iyoha (77’)

Two first-half goals set the tone for Fortuna Düsseldorf as they condemned Hansa Rostock to a third defeat in a row at the Merkur Spielarena. Polish striker Dawid Kownacki netted for the fifth time this season to open the scoring – latching onto Tim Oberdorf’s excellent pass with an impressive volley to lob Rostock’s goalkeeper. The 25-year-old then turned provider, assisting Marcel Sobottka for a second with a lovely one-two move on 27 minutes. Lukas Fröde headed the visitors back in the game shortly after the hour mark but Emmanuel Iyoha sealed the victory for the hosts six minutes after joining the action.

Watch: Düsseldorf see off Rostock

Hannover 1-1 Eintracht Braunschweig
Goals: 0-1
Ujah (69’), 1-1 Nielsen (77’)

Second-half goals from Havard Nielsen and Anthony Ujah ensured Hannover and Eintracht Braunschweig finished all square in their local derby. The result drops Hannover to sixth in the league while Braunschweig lift themselves off the bottom of the table but remain in the automatic relegation spots.

Karlsruhe 0-0 Heidenheim

Karlsruhe and Heidenheim played out a 0-0 draw at BBBank Wildpark. Tim Kleindienst found the net in the second half but the goal was quickly ruled out for offside by the linesman. The hosts weren’t without chances with Jerome Gondorf threatening throughout. But three draws in the last four sees Heidenheim stuck in third and now three behind HSV in second.

Kaiserslautern 3-3 Darmstadt
Goals: 0-1
Kempe (45’+2), 0-2 Tietz (49’), 1-2 Redondo (74’), 2-2 Wunderlich (77’), 3-2 Redondo, 3-3 Seydel (90’+1)

One of the games of the season was played out at the Fritz-Walter-Stadion, with both Kaiserslautern and Darmstadt probably disappointed not to have won. The visitors led by two goals after 49 minutes, with Tobias Kempe and Phillip Tietz on the scoresheet. But the home side finally came to life in the later stages of the second half. Kenny Prince Redondo scored a brace either side of substitute Mike Wunderlich’s goal with the Red Devils on course for remarkable comeback victory. But the drama didn’t end there as Aaron Seydel scored a late equaliser for Darmstadt a minute into stoppage time – and just three after entering the field of play.

Watch: Highlights of the six-goal thriller in Kaiserslautern

St. Pauli 1-1 Sandhausen
Goals: 1-0
Irvine (38’), 1-1 Kinsombi (71’)

St. Pauli drew for the third matchday in a row, with Sandhausen scraping a point at the Millerntor in a game in which the hosts should have taken all three. Australia international Jackson Irvine opened the scoring with a powerful header from deep. But despite an abundance of chances for Timo Schultz’s men, David Kinsombi tapped in his fourth of the season on 71 minutes after Pauli’s defenders were unable to clear their lines.

Magdeburg 2-1 Greuther Fürth
Goals: 1-0
Piccini (38’), 1-1 Michalski (42’), 2-1 Kwarteng (86’)

Greuther Fürth’s miserable start to their Bundesliga 2 return continued after a late goal saw Magdeburg steal all three points from the visiting Cloverleaves. The hosts were in front on 38 minutes; Italian defender Cristiano Piccini the quickest to react to Andreas Linde’s parry. The visitors were level four minutes later just before half-time, Damian Michalski heading in from a nicely placed Marco John corner. But that was about as good as it got for Fürth, who dropped to the foot of the table after Moritz-Broni Kwarteng bagged his fourth of the season with four minutes to go.
