Borussia Mönchengladbach claim first UEFA Europa League point with draw at Istanbul Basaksehir
Borussia Mönchengladbach got their first point in this season’s UEFA Europa League with an injury-time goal from Patrick Herrmann at Istanbul Basaksehir.
Istanbul Basaksehir 1-1 Borussia Mönchengladbach
Goals: 1-0 Visca (55'), 1-1 Herrmann (90'+1)
Gladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer was quickly tested in Turkey when forced into a flying save from former Greuther Fürth midfielder Danijel Aleksic, firing off a volley from the edge of the box. Breel Embolo then went close for the Bundesliga side when he got a towering header to an Oscar Wendt cross, but Basaksehir goalkeeper Mert Günok was equal to it and could tip the ball over the bar. Sommer denied Edin Visca one-on-one before making another smart save from a swerving effort from Irfan Kahveci, but chances were otherwise at a premium in the first 45 minutes.
Sommer was unable to stop Visca after the break, however, when the home side broke with a long ball over the top and the Bosnian tucked the ball beyond the Gladbach goalkeeper. Once again there was a lack of chances for either side as the play became stretched, but Borussia did create one telling attack in injury time as substitute Rami Bensebaini was picked out in the box from a long free-kick. The left-back poked his shot against the crossbar, but fellow sub Herrmann was in acres of space to tap the ball home unopposed for his first goal since January and earn Gladbach their first point in group J.

HERE COME THE TEAMS
The sides are making their way out at the Basaksehir Fatih Terim Stadyumu in Istanbul.
WHO ARE BASAKSEHIR
One of five Süper Lig clubs based in Istanbul, Basaksehir are a young team having only been founded in 1990 and reaching the top flight for the first time in 2007. Since a year back in the second division they have built an interesting squad of players that has at various stages included the likes of Emmanuel Adebayor, former Bayern and Stuttgart defender Serdar Tasci, Robinho, Gökhan Inler, Gael Clichy and Demba Ba.
SOME WIEDERSEHENS
Gladbach’s Stefan Lainer and Basaksehir’s Fredrik Gulbrandsen played together under Marco Rose at Red Bull Salzburg for the last two years, while Breel Embolo and Junior Caicara were once teammates at Schalke. Danijel Aleksic (Greuther Fürth), Eljero Elia (Hamburg and Werder Bremen) and Ba (Hoffenheim) have all previously played in the Bundesliga.
GOOD DOMESTIC FORM
Mönchengladbach, however, have been impressive in the Bundesliga so far this campaign. They are currently fifth, where they finished last season, with four wins and a draw from their opening six games. The only loss in that time came against then leaders RB Leipzig, but the Foals have since made up for that with back-to-back derby victories against Cologne and Fortuna Düsseldorf, as well as thrashing Hoffenheim on the road.
BASAKSEHIR IMPROVING
The Turkish side began their European adventure in the third round of UEFA Champions League qualifying after finishing second in their league last season. They lost both matches against Olympiacos of Greece, now in Bayern Munich’s UCL group, to drop into the Europa League. They also lost their opening two Süper Lig games of 2019/20 but have since reacted with two wins and draws each to climb up to eighth in the standings.
CENTURY UP FOR GLADBACH
This is Borussia Mönchengladbach’s 100th match in the UEFA Cup/Europa League. They won the competition twice during the 1970s (1974/75 and 1978/79) under legendary coach Hennes Weisweiler and Udo Lattel, as well as reaching the final in 1972/73 (Weisweiler) and 1979/80 (Jupp Heynckes).
BOTH IN NEED
Both these two clubs will admit their Europa League campaigns got off to a less than ideal start in Group J as they both suffered 4-0 defeats. Basaksehir were beaten in the Italian capital by Roma while Gladbach were stunned at Borussia-Park by Wolfsberger.
FOALS UNCHANGED
Marco Rose names the same side that started Saturday’s 3-0 win at Hoffenheim. Laszlo Benes pulled out of the warm-up for that game with a tight muscle and is not risked tonight in Istanbul.
ONE BASAKSEHIR CHANGE
The home side opt for just one new face compared to the team that started their 5-0 Turkish Süper Lig win at home to Rizespor last Friday. Cape Verdean centre-back Ponck comes in alongside former Liverpool man Martin Skrtel at the heart of the defence in place of Alexandru Epureanu.
