USA youth international Joe Scally “will have the chance to showcase himself” in the Borussia Mönchengladbach first team in the coming weeks, according to head coach Marco Rose.

Scally, who turned 18 on 31 December 2020, agreed a deal to join the Foals from New York City FC in November 2019, and he is set to arrive at Borussia-Park on Monday 4 January.

The defender, who is close friends with compatriot and Borussia Dortmund starlet Gio Reyna, would be eligible to play in the club’s youth or reserve sides, but Rose insists he is very much part of his plans with the Gladbach first team.

“He’s due to arrive on Monday and will undergo all the necessary medical examinations,” the 44-year-old said at his pre-match press conference ahead of Gladbach’s Matchday 14 trip to 16th-placed Arminia Bielefeld on Saturday.

“Then the plan is for us to take a look at him. He will have the chance to showcase himself in first-team training, that’s why we’ve brought him here.”

While Scally will not feature in the Bielefeld game, he could be part of the squad that faces Bayern Munich on 8 January. Gladbach have 11 competitive matches in the eight weeks until the end of February, so the teenager could be handed is Bundesliga debut sooner rather than later as Rose rotates his side in a bid to keep his players fresh.
