Werder Bremen striker Josh Sargent: "When the coach is ready, I'll be ready"

USA striker Josh Sargent believes it is only a matter of time before he breaks into the Werder Bremen first team, after a string of impressive displays for the U23s.

Sargent has scored seven goals in 11 appearances in Germany's fourth tier so far this season, but is still awaiting his hotly anticipated call-up to the senior side.

"When [Florian Kohfeldt] says my time has come, I'll be ready," said Sargent, who officially joined Bremen upon turning 18 in February 2018. "He's already said I'm close. I'm doing everything I can to show that I'm ready to play for the first team."

Sargent's efforts also include two strikes in five appearances for the USA, taking his total goals haul for the calendar year to nine. That's more than each of Kohfeldt's go-to quartet in the Bremen attack: Claudio Pizarro, Max Kruse, Martin Harnik and Yuya Osako. Not that the flame-haired forward expects to jump the queue.

"We're taking it day by day," Missouri-born Sargent explained. "First, I have to show that I can compete with all the other strikers. If I don’t break through this year, then I'll definitely be a firm fixture in the senior squad next year. This year is just the start for me. Hopefully it'll continue, and I'll do even better next year."
