VfB Stuttgart claim huge three points away to Juventus in UEFA Champions League

El Bilal Touré's late strike earned VfB Stuttgart a well-deserved three points against 10-man Juventus, after Enzo Millot had missed a penalty shortly beforehand.

Juventus 0–1 Stuttgart
Goals: 0-1 Touré 90'+2 (assist: Millot)
Sent off: Danilo 84’
Missed pen: Millot 86’

The first chance of the game went the way of Stuttgart after a brilliant surge down the right from Josha Vagnoman found Maximilian Mittelstädt in space on the edge of the box, but his tame finish was straight at the ‘keeper. The two then combined again soon after, when Vagnoman headed just wide from close range after an excellent cross to the back post. The visitors certainly asserted themselves well in the opening stages, giving Juventus little room to breathe whilst dominating possession. The only opportunity of note for the hosts was a long-distance free-kick from Nicolo Fagioli that went narrowly wide. Ermedin Demirović came closest to opening the scoring when Mattia Perin tipped his close-range effort onto the post, with Stuttgart rightfully frustrated not to have taken the lead before the half-time whistle.

Stuttgart thought they had made up for their lack of decisiveness when a deflected Deniz Undav volley flew into the bottom corner of Perin’s goal, but it was ruled out for handball. This seemed to trigger a triple substitution from the Italian side, although the changes couldn’t stop the next big chance of the game falling to Stuttgart, and Demirović again, who shot straight at Perin from around 12 yards out. Juventus did see more of the ball past the hour mark, mainly as a result of the visitors intensifying their search for a winning goal. Nevertheless, Thiago Motta’s side weren’t able to trouble Alexander Nübel in the VfB goal. The visitors had the chance to turn one point into three from the spot after Danilo received a second booking for a foul on Anthony Rouault with 10 minutes to go, but Enzo Millot’s penalty was excellently saved by Perin. Just when Stuttgart thought they’d be leaving the Juventus Stadium with a draw, El Bilal Touré struck in additional time, with his emphatic finish inside the area, after combining with Millot, providing his side with their first three points in the competition.

Match stats

  • Stuttgart boast more goals in their opening seven matches of the Bundesliga season (15) than Juventus do in their first eight Serie A clashes (11).
  • Undav has seven goals in his past seven games for club and country.

Full-time Juventus 0-1 Stuttgart

What an end to the game! Stuttgart continued their first half dominance, but it looked as though it wasn't to be, especially after Undav's goal was disallowed just after the restart. Danilo then brought Rouault down in the box late on, giving away a penalty. Millot took it and Perin saved, continuing his magnificent performance from throughout the game. But Millot and Stuttgart would not be denied as he threaded Touré through, who thumped home in the 91st minute, to give Stuttgart their first three points of their Champions League campaign.

So close!

The free-kick that comes after Danilo fouls is taken by Rieder. He plays it deep to Chabot who heads back across to Rouault, who connects with his knee, guiding the ball on target but he can't generate enough power to beat Perin.

Nearly the opener!

Cambiaso plays Weah through, who crosses first time to the far post into the path of the arriving Yildiz, but Vagnoman clears round the post, celebrating the clearance as he would a goal. Nothing comes of the following corner for the hosts.
78'

Corner for Stuttgart

Rieder takes an inswinger, but Perin collects.
75'

Quiet moments

The game just seems to be losing some of it's spark. Stuttgart are no longer dominating possession and neither side has managed to test either goalkeeper in the last few minutes. It should pick up again as we enter the last quarter of an hour.
68'

Substitution

66'

Effort from Thuram

Yildiz crosses from the left and the ball pings around the box before landing at Thuram on the edge of the box. His shot is deflected and looked dangerous but doesn't end up on target.
64'

End-to-end

Weah breaks down the right for Juve, but his cross into Yildiz comes to nothing. Then Millot is up the other end on the edge of the box gearing up to shoot, but is stopped by an excellent tackle from Danilo.
62'

Perin denies Stuttgart again!

This time it's Millot. He wriggles free off the left and gets a low shot down to the near post, but once again Perin tips it round the post. What a night the keeper is having!
61'

Demirović goes close

Leweling cuts back to where the striker is waiting on the edge of the box. His first time shot is really travelling but Perin makes an excellent reaction save to tip it over the bar.

Undav in disbelief

The forward can't hide his shock as his opener is chalked off for handball.

Triple change

A triple substitution for Juventus early on in the second half tells you all it needs as to what Thiago Motta thought of that first half performance.

Undav!

Leweling pounces on a Perin save

The Juventus goalkeeper has been the standout player for the hosts here. They'll be hoping to turn things around after the interval.
45'

Half-time: Juventus 0-0 Stuttgart

All square at the break. The hosts will be glad for the break, as they go in having made no clear cut chances and having been dominated in every respect by visitors Stuttgart. The German side have created well, particularly through a combination down the left of Mittelstädt and Leweling. Demirović came closest when he hit the post, and Undav's free header late on in the half was tipped over by Perin, who has had an excellent performance so far filling in as back-up keeper for Juventus. But still no breakthrough.
45'

One additional minute

The fourth official confirms there will be one minute added on for injuries and stoppages.
43'

Over from Vagnoman

The right back's left footed shot from the edge of the box flies over the bar.
41'

Great save by Perin

Rouault plays a clever ball with the outside of his left boot into Undav, who tries to beat the keeper with a looping header, but Perin tips over the bar. Nothing comes of the subsequent corner.
38'

Chance for Stuttgart

Leweling releases Mittelstädt with a backheel, who crosses early in towards Undav but his shot is blocked. The corner is whipped into the box, but cleared well by Juve.
30'

Undav this time

A Juventus mistake results in the ball falling to Undav. He shoots from distance and his effort is on target but not enough to challenge Perin.
29'

Demirović hits the post!

How have Stuttgart not scored? Millot threads it through to Demirović, who shoots from inside the box from the right. He shoots low at the near post, but Perin tips it onto the woodwork. So close for Stuttgart!
27'

Corner for Stuttgart

Mittelstädt and Leweling combine well down the left once again, winning a corner. Stiller takes short to Millot before getting it back and crossing it. It falls to Leweling eventually, but he drags his shot wide.
22'

Great ball by Mittelstädt

Once again the fullback is causing Juventus problems. A fantastic whipped cross from deep really troubles the Juve backline and very nearly reaches Millot at the far side, but the home side clear.
16'

First corner for Juve

Yildiz twists and turns, making it into the box, but Karazor blocks his cross behind for a corner. Conceicao takes and it initially looks dangerous, but a foul on a Stuttgart player halts the danger for the hosts.
12'

Undav hits over

Millot does well to wriggle free of a couple Juventus defenders. He lays it off to Undav, whose shot on the half-volley is blazed over the bar. That was a waste, because that was a real chance for Stuttgart.
11'

Juventus growing

The hosts are beginning to find their feet here. Cabal drives in acres of space down the left and puts a cross in towards McKennie, but Stuttgart clear. Conceicao retrieves it, works some space and puts another cross in, but Stuttgart clear again.
8'

Close by Vagnoman

Another well worked move by Stuttgart! Mittelstädt is found unmarked down the left and has time to pick out a cross to the back post. Vagnoman connects but his header is narrowly wide.
5'

First corner

Undav's shot is deflected behind for a corner. Stuttgart play it short but nothing comes of it. The visitors have started well, pressing high and not allowing Juventus time to play it out from the back.
3'

Opening chance

The first chance of the game goes Stuttgart's way. Vagnoman breaks down the right and cuts it back to Mittelstädt, who is waiting on the edge of the box. His right-footed effort is on target but never troublesm Perin.

And we're off!

The hosts get us underway here in Turin.

Late change

Kephren Thuram has come in for Douglas Luiz, who was set to make his full Champions League debut.

A chance to bounce back?

Stuttgart will hope this big game is an opportunity to reignite their form, being winless in their last four games in all competitions.

First time meeting

This will be the first time that these two sides have met in the competition. So, who will get the first three points?

A question of efficiency?

Despite their contrasting fortunes in the tournament so far, Stuttgart actually have had more shot (30) and shots on target (17) than their Italian counterparts in the tournament so far.

Get the ball rolling

Stuttgart are yet to pick up three points in the Champions League, and come into this game on the back of a heavy defeat to Bayern Munich in the league. Their opponents have two wins from two in this competition, with their previous victory coming against another Bundesliga side, RB Leipzig.

Thiago Motta on facing Stuttgart

“Stuttgart play well. They are very good at pressing first and organising themselves, building a line of five that is difficult to overcome. I like them a lot, it will be a beautiful game to play, and we will have to be complete, as I think the Germans are, preventing them from playing a comfortable game: this means keeping the ball, fighting and defending together when it's time, closing spaces, not giving them chances to play their own game."

Sebastian Hoeneß on facing Juventus

"We want to play with courage and show what we can do on the European stage. Juventus are a historic club with great tradition, who are doing really well. There's great excitement for tomorrow. We're not going to get an abundance of chances. It's about showing our strengths and style of play on the pitch."

Watch: Bayern 4-0 Stuttgart

Sebastian Hoeneß's men fell to a demoralising defeat to Bayern on Matchday 7.

Stern defence

Juventus have won four and drawn four in their first eight league games, while conceding a grand total of just one goal. Undav and co. will have to be at their very best if they're to unlock the Juve backline.

Stumbling Stuttgart

In the Bundesliga, Sebastian Hoeneß's men have struggled of late, drawing two and losing one in their last three games. They conceded first in their two draws against Wolfsburg and Hoffenheim, before losing 4-0 against Bayern in their most recent game.

Searching for three points

Stuttgart are yet to win in this competition, losing to Real Madrid in their first game despite a strong performance before drawing to Sparta Prague. Juventus have won both of their opening fixtures against PSV and RB Leipzig.

Razor-sharp!

Stuttgart fans will be hoping in-form striker Deniz Undav can make the difference in this stiff test, and his stats suggest that he could be the man to step up in Italy: six goals and one assist in ten appearances across four competitions this season, including a strike against Real Madrid on Matchday 1.
camera-photo

Go time

Sebastian Hoeneß' men lost 3-1 away to Real Madrid and drew 1-1 at home to Sparta Prague and now sit among the elimination places (24th) after two matchdays. Thiago Motta's Juventus, meanwhile, sit seventh following an opening-day 3-1 win at home to PSV and a dramatic 3-2 win in Leipzig.
