American defender Lennard Maloney joins Borussia Dortmund from Union Berlin
Borussia Dortmund have confirmed the signing of German-American defender Lennard Maloney from fellow Bundesliga side Union Berlin.
Berlin-born Maloney has signed a permanent deal with Dortmund having gone on trial with the club at the end of July.
Born to an American Air Force veteran father and German mother in Berlin, Maloney is eligibly to represent both the country of his birth and that of his father's. The 20-year-old has represented Germany three times at youth international level, but most recently - in September 2018 - made his first outing in the red, white and blue of the USA's U20s team.
"Lennard fully convinced us in a test match and also in training," explained Dortmund's U23 coach Ingo Preuß. "He's really looking forward to his new job."
Maloney had been with Union since 2016 but made only one first-team appearance for the club and spent the second half of the 2019/20 season on loan at Chemnitzer, where he made eight appearances in the 3. Liga.
Maloney could become the fifth American to play for Dortmund in the Bundesliga, following in the footsteps of Jovan Kirovski, Joe Gyau, Christian Pulisic and most recently, Gio Reyna.
