Goals: 0-1
Musiala 2' (assist: Kane), 0-2 Musiala (37'), 0-3 Sané (45'+1), 0-4 Musiala (45'+4)

Fresh from putting five past Bochum at the weekend, Bayern signalled straight away that they retained their hunger for goals when Musiala opened the scoring inside two minutes. Alphonso Davies scurried down the left and played a low ball into the box, which Harry Kane expertly cushioned first-time into Musiala’s path to curl past Robin Zentner. Vincent Kompany’s side remained on top, with Manuel Neuer largely a spectator in goal, but it wasn’t until the 37th minute that they extended their lead when Musiala prodded in the rebound from close range after Zenter had parried a Kane header. Bayern effectively put the outcome of the game beyond all doubt before the interval when Leroy Sané finished on the turn in stoppage time. There was more to come before the interval, too, with Musiala sealing his hat-trick from close range following good work on the right by Konrad Laimer.

Bayern shifted down a few gears after the restart, with Musiala and Kane rested ahead of a busy domestic and European calendar. Second-half substitute Thomas Müller made Zentner work almost immediately, while Mainz counterpart Karim Onisiwo stung the palms of Neuer with a well-struck strike from the edge of the area. Kompany continued to ring the changes, with one of them, Leon Goretzka, going close to adding a fifth goal, but Zentner was equal to his headed attempt. An injury to defender Eric Dier took the shine off an otherwise perfect night at the office for the record 20-time cup winners, who have now won nine of 13 competitive games since Kompany took over from Thomas Tuchel in the summer.

Match stats

  • Musiala is now this season's joint-leading scorer in the DFB Cup with three goals.
  • This was his first senior hat-trick and saw him reach 50 competitive goals for Bayern.
  • Musiala has had a direct hand in 10 goals against Mainz (seven goals, three assists) in as many competitive appearances - more than against any other club.
  • Müller made his 67th DFB Cup appearance for Bayern, going level with Manfred Kaltz’s total for Hamburg. Only Karl-Heinz Körbel has played more cup games for a single club (70 for Eintracht Frankfurt).
  • This was Mainz’s first home cup tie since February 2023 when they were beaten 4-0 by Bayern. The 05ers have lost all four cup fixtures against the Bavarians.
  • Bayern were knocked out in the second round in three of the last four seasons – more than any other club in that time – having always gone further in the previous 19 years. Hansi Flick, Julian Nagelsmann and Thomas Tuchel all lost their first second-round tie in charge.

Full-time! Mainz 0-4 Bayern

Bayern power into the last 16, thanks to four first-half goals in Mainz. Impressive stuff again from Kompany's charges!
88'

Job (almost) done

Hansi Flick, Julian Nagelsmann and Thomas Tuchel all experienced second-round exits as Bayern coach in recent seasons, so this is a case of test passed with flying colours for Kompany.
83'

Half chance

Widmer has a go from just inside the area, but the Mainz sub's shot doesn't trouble Neuer, who's been a virtual spectator today.
81'

Ibra-cadabra

Although no relation to the famous Zlatan, Bayern's own Ibra tries to conjure up something special from range, but his shot is blocked by the head of Bell.
77'

There's the change

Arijon Ibrahimović is Dier's replacement. He's a midfielder, so Kimmich might have to see out the game in defence. Mainz, meanwhile, replace Caci with Widmer.
76'

Dier down

The Bayern defender goes down clutching his thigh. He'll have to come off...
73'

Chance!

Goretzka tries to get in on the act, but his header from a Kimmich set-piece is foiled by Zentner.
68'

Only one winner

This is the ninth time Kompany's Bayern have scored three or more goals in one game. They've only done so once without winning - 3-3 vs. Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga - but there will be no denying them today.
64'

Dangerous play

Nebel is penalised for a high boot on Tel. No harm intended, but those ones can be nasty.
64'

Yellow card

59'

Commentator's curse

There go Mainz and test Neuer as Onisiwo takes a pass in his stride before letting rip from 16 yards with a shot that's too hot for the Bayern skipper to handle. That's more like it!
52'

Cat and mouse

Bayern are toying with their hosts, despite dropping down a couple of gears since the restart. Mainz just haven't been able to lay a glove on the Bundesliga leaders today...
49'

Müller!

The Bayern sub is straight into the action, forcing a strong save from Zentner. Different personnel, same Bayern.
46'

Changes

Bell's on to shore up the Mainz defence with the booked Jenz making way. Bayern-owned Vidovic also gets the hook, with Onisiwo tasked with trying to stretch the Bayern defence. Kompany, meanwhile, sends on Tel and Müller for the devastating Musiala-Kane double act.

Half-time: Mainz 0-4 Bayern

Utter dominance from Bayern, pure brilliance from Musiala. Mainz are surely heading out of the competition.

Musiala hat-trick!

Another poacher's goal for the youngster, this time with a little helping hand in the build-up from Kohr. He won't care. That's his first career hat-trick. Bayern are running riot!

Bayern in cruise control

Bayern attack with Kane after an Amiri free-kick is blocked. He feeds Davies, who picks out Sané in the box for a silky smooth finish on the turn. That's surely goodnight Mainz!

Caution

Laimer blocks off a Mainz attack, the Austrian joining Kohr in the referee's little black book for his troubles.

Goal machines

That's already 45 goals in 13 matches under Kompany. He really does set his team up to play attacking football - they're loving it.
37'

Musiala at the double!

Daylight for Bayern, and it's that man Musiala. There's a hint of offside as he goes to poke the ball over the line after Zentner had parried a Kane header, but the absence of VAR in the opening two rounds of the DFB Cup means there's no check. Mainz have it all to do!
37'
Jamal Musiala
33'

Side netting!

Caci meets Mwene's cross on the volley, but his shot only finds the side netting. Good spell for Mainz, this...
32'

Oh, Dier!

The Bayern defender is bumped off the ball by Kohr, but recovers to get in a tackle and prevent the Mainz enforcer from getting a shot off.
31'

Well read

Better from Zentner to narrow the angle after Sané threatened to latch onto Musiala's cute through-ball.
27'

Huge chance!

Leroy Sané fancies his chances after scoring a trademark curler at the weekend. Zentner can't hold it, allowing Gnabry to react and bundle a close-range effort onto the upright before putting the rebound wide. How did that stay out?!
camera-photo

So far, so good for Bayern

They have the lead and are playing the game on their terms.
20'

Hard-Kohr

The Mainz man is booked after clattering into Musiala. No wonder he's nicknamed 'Hard-Kohr'.
20'

Yellow card

19'

Blood on the dancefloor

It took a while to stop the bleeding above his right eye, but the Mainz No.1 has been patched up and is OK to continue.
14'

Injury concern

Zentner is in a spot of bother after colliding with Kane, after Davies and Gnabry combined to prise open the Mainz defence. The physios are on...
9'

Are they Pep's team in disguise?

Kompany's Bayern are bossing this. They're already around 90 percent for possession, underlining some of the comparisons with Guardiola's class of 2013-2016 that have been doing the rounds.
5'

Magic Musiala

That was Musiala's ninth goal involvement in 11 games in all competitions so far this season. The Bayern magician has four goals and five assists.
2'

Musiala!

Bayern make the perfect start. Davies motors up the left and plays a pass into the feet of Kane. He touches it off quite exquisitely for Musiala, who fires in with aplomb from 10 yards out. Swish!

Under way in Mainz!

Sascha Stegemann's whistle signals the start of this all-Bundesliga encounter. What a story it would be if Mainz can dump out the record 20-time DFB Cup winners...

Team news - Mainz

Mainz head coach Bo Henriksen has made two changes to the team that draw 1-1 with Gladbach on Friday. Star striker Jonathan Burkardt is out injured so in comes Bayern loanee Sieb, who has two Bundesliga goals from seven appearances to far this season. Elsewhere, attacking midfielder Jae-sung Lee drops to the bench for 20-year-old Vidović, who is also on loan at Mainz from... you guessed it, Bayern.

Up front it's Harry Kane, of course.

Another accolade for Kane

The England striker picked up the Gerd Müller trophy at the Ballon d'or ceremony on Monday night, sharing the trophy with Kylian Mbappe after an outstanding 52-goal year.

Henriksen: "Anything can happen"

Speaking on his side's history with Bayern and the magic of the cup, Bo Henriksen was full of motivation to take the next step in the DFB Cup, telling the club's official website: ""I'm never afraid. Football should always be about having fun. The 1:8 defeat last season was no fun, but it was perhaps still good for us because we learned from it and didn't lose another eleven games after that...we're playing eleven against eleven, we're playing at home, anything can happen...". He continued: ""I really enjoy the cup, it's a fantastic competition...Power, love, emotions: everything in a knockout game, anything can happen":

Kompany: "It won't be easy"

With three early cup exits out of the last four seasons, Vincent Kompany is well aware of the dangers of the cup tie, especially against a good Mainz side, telling the club's official website: "Mainz are strong in tackles and always try to put pressure on from their compactness. They are an opponent who is alive, you can see that in every situation. It is a cup game. It will not be an easy task. We are preparing and looking forward to the game..."

Watch: Mainz 1-1 Borussia Mönchengladbach highlights

Mainz were held at home by Gerard Seoane's side on Matchday 8.

Previous meetings

Last season saw Bayern do the league double over Mainz with an aggregate score of 11-2, while the last time these two met in the cup also saw Bayern emerge with the win (4-0). The last time Mainz got the better of Bayern was in the Bundesliga 2022/23 season, when they won 3-1 at home on Matchday 29.

Bayern back to winning ways

Despite a disheartening 4-1 loss to Barcelona in the Champions League, Bayern's last two league games have seen them score nine goals unanswered against Stuttgart (4-0) and Bochum (5-0).

Mixed few weeks for Mainz

Mainz have won, drawn and lost in their last three games, making this fixture all the more unpredictable. Bo Henriksen's side have shown promise going forward and performed well in a recent loss to Leipzig, but have still struggled with consistency and come into this DFB Cup tie on the back of a 1-1 draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

The story so far

Mainz needed extra-time to see off 3. Liga's Wehen Wiesbaden in the first round (3-1). Bayern had no such troubles against Bundesliga 2's Ulm, the record winners triumphing 4-0 on the road.
