Karim Onisiwo orchestrates big Mainz win over Cologne
Karim Onisiwo starred as Mainz recorded their first home Bundesliga win of the season against 10-man Cologne to go third in the table, overnight at least.
Mainz 5-0 Cologne
Goals: 1-0 Ingvartsen pen. 11', 2-0 Kohr 35', 3-0 Stach 40' (assist: Lee), 4-0 Martin (73'), 5-0 Onisiwo 83' (assist: Burkardt)
Red cards: Kilian (28')
Mainz landed the first meaningful blow as Jae-Sung Lee side-footed a volley against the crossbar from range. Cologne stumbled to their feet, but were down soon after when Luca Kilian conceded possession and a penalty for dragging back the rampaging Onisiwo. Marcus Ingvartsen made no mistake from the spot, sending Marwin Schwäbe the wrong way with his fourth goal in as many competitive games. Kilian was sent for an early shower in the 28th minute when he collected a second yellow card for impeding Onisiwo. Mainz duly made the most of their numerical advantage, delivering a quick one-two as Dominik Kohr fired in at the second attempt and Anton Stach lashed in from inside the area.
Timo Hübers prevented Onisiwo getting a shot off early in the second half, before Florian Kainz thundered a free-kick against the upright at the other end. A Schwäbe mis-kick gifted Mainz a fourth goal on the hour, but substitute Angelo Fulgini's routine finish was ruled out after Onisiwo was adjudged to have used his arm to redirect the Cologne goalkeeper's errant clearance to his teammate. There was no debating the 05ers' next effort as Aaron Martin whipped in an unstoppable 25-yard free-kick, Onisiwo having drawn the foul from Eric Martel. Substitutes Aymane Barkok and Jonathan Burkardt combined for what they thought was a fifth goal, but VAR intervened one more. Burkardt then turned provider for Onisiwo to cap a brilliant performance with a smart finish through the legs of Schwäbe.
