Mathys Tel joins Bayern Munich from Rennes
Bayern Munich have completed the signing of talented 17-year-old striker Mathys Tel from French Ligue 1 side Rennes.
Although eligible for the club’s youth teams and reserve side, the six-time France U18 international has been earmarked to go straight into the first-team squad after putting pen to paper on long-term deal at the Allianz Arena.
“Bayern are one of the best teams in the world. I’m very much looking forward to this great challenge and I will give my all for this club," Tel said on signing for Bayern. "I’ve been very impressed with the discussions with Hasan Salihamidzic and the Bayern management, and I quickly realised I definitely wanted to come to Munich.”
“Mathys is one of the biggest talents in Europe, a very quick, technically strong and versatile striker. We’ve been watching him for a long time and we were able to convince him to take his next important steps in Munich with us now," added sporting director Salihamidzic. "We are proud of that, as there were a lot of clubs who wanted to sign him. The development of such an exceptional young player is an exciting project for us all. Of course, Mathys needs time, he needs minutes on the pitch and rhythm. We are all convinced he has a great career in front of him and that he will help our team.”
Tel only joined Rennes in July 2020 but after impressing with the U19s he was promoted to the first team after just one season. He made his senior debut on 15 August 2021 as a substitute against Stade Brest in what was the first of seven substitute outings in Ligue 1 in 2021/22, while he also featured twice in the UEFA Europa Conference League.
The teenager’s arrival takes the club’s incoming summer transfers to five following the signings of Sadio Mane, Matthijs de Ligt, Ryan Gravenberch and Noussair Mazraoui, giving head coach Julian Nagelsmann plenty of options in what looks set to be a new-look Bayern side in 2022/23.
